PSALM 107: THANK THE LORD FOR OUR SALVATION

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 107

Psalm 107 is the first in the 5th Book of Psalms, written, we believe, by David, mainly as songs of THANKSGIVING AND WORSHIP. This is a HISTORICAL PSALM,  as we remember again how God's people - the Israelites - have come to the Promised Land, and how God has blessed them. 

We read of:

* Travellers, Wanders & Lost,  facing trials and discouragement in the desert wilderness.

* Captives and Prisoners who have disobeyed the laws of the Lord.

* The Sick and those who are Near Death.

* Sailors tossed in  Storms on the sea, both literally and of life. 

All these people "call out to the Lord in their distress", and we are reminded that God always listens to their prayers and answers them.

"God will rescue us from our trials if we ask Him for help." Max Lucado

"Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivers them in their distress."

Are you facing any of these trials? Are you discouraged? Circumstances may differ for each of us, but we all need to cry out to Lord for help in faith that He will hear us. God is able to lift the heaviest trial that we have and HE WILL! He can HEAL ANY SICKNESS and CALM ANY STORM in our life, but  he reality is, He doesn't always "DO IT IMMEDIATELY!" It will always be 'IN HIS TIME". We need to have COURAGE and be at PEACE, to TRUST HIM to let GOD SAVE US and do "HIS MIRACULOUS TRANSFORMATIONS" in our lives. 

"Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord." Psalm  104:43 (NLT)

In the final verses of this Psalm, David describes transformation on his CREATION and His PEOPLE. God was faithful and loving to His people, the Israelites, and through His Son Jesus, we too have a SAVIOUR AND DELIVERER.

ALL HIS PEOPLE THANK THE LORD  - Read Verses 1-3

We too are to give thanks for the LORD'S GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, MERCY AND LOVINGKINDNESS. WHY?

1. Because IT ENDURES FOREVER. God's love is eternal. No matter what happens in our future, we know that God will always be kind, loving and merciful to us.  For OUR GOD IS A FAITHFUL GOD!

"Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for He is good. His faithful love endures forever."

"The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease! Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning." Lamentations 3:22&23 (NIV)

2. Because WE HAVE EXPERIENCED IT IN OUR LIFE. We are "redeemed" because of His love in sending His Son Jesus to die for us. We therefore NEED TO TELL EVERYONE!

"Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story - those He has redeemed from the hand of the foe, those He gathered from the lands, from East and West, from North and South."

3. Because God GATHERED HIS PEOPLE TOGETHER to worship and praise Him together. We still  too can do this together, as "redeemed" children of God. 

THE LORD HEARS THEIR CRIES

PART 1: TRAVELLERS,  WANDERING & LOST - Read Verses 4-9

The Israelites wandered in the wilderness. They were lost, hungry and thirsty. When they "cried out" God met their needs. We too, need to thank the Lord when He answereds our prayers. But our needs are more than just physical.  We have a longing in our soul that has filled. This is the greatest gift of all. 

Jesus tells 3 stories in Luke 15, parables of how he SEEKS OUT THE LOST:

" For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things." Psalm 107:9

In Luke 1, Mary, the mother of Jesus, recites this verse in her prayer, for she had her "longing filled" when she had read Gods's Word. She loved the Lord and His Word. If we know God's Word  and have a desire to know Jesus, God's Son as our Saviour, "the hunger and thirst in our soul will be filled."

"Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never grow hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:33 (NIV)   

PART 2: GUILTY FROM CAPTIVITY - Read Verses 10-16  

Some of the people who came to the Promised Land had come from captivity in prisons. They were actually in dungeons and chains because they had rebelled against God. They were prisoners because of their disobedience.

They too fell down and "cried to the Lord". A cry can be the "most eleoquent type of prayer" in which we "weep out our souls". In some cases it can be a "confession of our sins", in which case the Lord "immediately hears us and forgives us", cleansing our souls.

We too have had our chains broken by Jesus. We trust in His redeeming work at Calvary. In His time, our trials will passd as we TRUST AND OBEY, and look forward to HIS MERCY AND GRACE. We will come, in time, become like "gold tried in a fire". 

"In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith - of greater worth than gold even though refined by fire - may result in praise, glory and honour, when Jesus Christ is revealed."

"This is comfort to the greatest sinners, if they can find a praying heart, God will find a "pitying heart". Rebels shall receive with sweetness, if at length they return, though bought at the cross."

     PART 3: SICKNESS & DEATH - Verses 17-22   

Because of their iniquities and foolishness, the Israelites became sick; but still God listened to their "cries" and heard their prayers. But if he removed from us our difficult times of illness "immediately", He leaves no time for the lessons He could teach us. 

Don't get me wrong, I believe in PRAYING TO TH LORD, and have EXPERIENCED HIS ANSWERS, but they have been IN HIS OWN TIME and according TO HIS OWN WILL. 

"The Lord doesn't always see fit to remove a disease from His child, though instead He removes the His children from the disease by taking them to Heaven." Ian Story.            

I have experienced this answer many a time too, when it has come to praying for family illness. I am not saying I have not grieved at the losses, but I have discovered that God has always been with me in this times, because I have "called out to Him in my distress".

"Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. He sent out His Word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave." Psalm 107:19&20 (NIV)

We need to have an appetite for God's Word, for the Bible is the "most reliable healer". In the Gospels we read many instances of where Jesus heals the sick and even raises the dead.

"All that God had to do in order to save us is to SEND US INTO HIS WORD. He has done this by sending HIS DEAR SON who is the INCARNATE WORD. He sent us HIS WORD in the shaper of the HOLY SCRIPTURES, and with the PREACHING OF HIS SERVANTS, but what we want most of all is the WORD SENT BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT." Charles Spurgeon

"In the beginning was the WORD, and WORD WAS WITH GOD, and the WORD WAS GOD."

"Let us give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of His works  and songs of joy." Psalm 107:21-22 (NIV)

PART 4: STORM TOSSED - Read Verses 23-32

Many sailors had come to the Promised Land travelling over the seas. They had seen storms which had  tossed them back and forth, Like all others in need, they too "called out to the Lord" when they were "storm tossed". 

"Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper, the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and He guided them to their desired haven." Psalm 107:28-30 (NIV)  

"I have been at sea in the storm and in the circumstances I describe, I have cried out to the Lord in my trouble. I am spurred to describe the storm and to retale GOD'S MERCY. None, but either a man inspired by God, will show things as they are or who as actually been in these circumstances can tell you in what priority the Psalmists speaks. GOD SAVED THE READER from such a dangerous an fearful tempest at sea." Adam Clarke                             

You, like the Psalmist and Adam Clarke, will want to have a "safe haven" when you too are in the "storms of life". And as "wild as it gets", God will calm it, just as Jesus calmed His disciples in the storm on the Sea of Galilee, even though they had "litte faith".

This is the final part in which this Psalm reminds us that we need to GIVE THE LORD THANKS AND PRAISE for HIS SALVATION, REDEMPTION AND DELIVERANCE from trials.

"Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders."

                          GOD'S TRANSFORMATIONS

PART 1: OF HIS CREATION - Verses 33-38

God turns GOOD INTO BAD like a river into wilderness. The beautiful Jerusalem was again turned into a desert. 

"He turned rivers into desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there." Psalm 107:33-34  (NIV)

God also turns BAD INTO GOOD - the dry land was again fruitful. He multiplied everything because of  His blessings. 

"He turned the desertr into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there He brought the hungry to live, and they found a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; He blessed them; and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let her herds diminish." Psalm 107:35-38 (NIV)

PART 2: OF HIS PEOPLE AND KINGDOMS - Read Verse 39-41

The Lord lifts up His people ON HIGH. The princes are brought LOW and His people become the KINGDOM OF JERUSALEM, numerous as a flock.

"But He lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks."

Just as the Israelites were rescued, blessed and transformed by God, we have been transformed by His Son Jesus. He died for us on the Cross, so that we receive forgiveness from our sin, and Jesus as our Saviour. We also recieve adoption as God's children.

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."

"So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith." Galatians 3:26 (NIV)

CONCLUSION - Verses 42&43

God rescued us from trials when we faithful and "call out to Him" in prayer. He transforms us and makes changes:

* HE GIVE GUIDANCE TO THE LOST.

* HE GIVES LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVE.

* HE RESTORES THE SICK AND THOSE NEAR DEATH.

* HE DELIVERS THOSE TOSSED AT SEA.

The people who are RIGHTEOUS notice these things, how God acts in history, and understands why He is so LOVING, MERCIFUL AND FAITHFUL; and they do what they do to OBSERVE HIS WAYS. 

"Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the LOVING DEEDS OF THE LORD."

PSALM 106 - GOD'S LOVE AND GRACE TO A REBELLIOUS PEOPLE

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 106, Exodus 13-15,               Numbers 11, 16, 25

"In Psalm 105, WE REMEMBER God's mighty deeds. In Psalm 106, THEY FORGET His mighty deeds."Alexander McLaren

Psalm 106 is the last in the 4th Book of Psalms that were not all written by David. Although we are sure Psalm 105 was, and Psalm 106 begins and ends with the same "Prayes of Praise and Hallelujahs"; the last verses seem to be of Babylonian exile origin. Therefore, we believe, it is probable that  it was written by Nehemiah or Ezra, or maybe even the prophet Jeremiah.

The theme of Psalm 106, unlike Psalm 105, is of Israel's rebellion. "Sin drives a wedge in our relationship with the Lord". In this Psalm we see that God's anger with His people, the Israelites, is prominent. But even more so, is GOD'S MERCY AND GRACE. Like our ancestors, "we stand guilty and deserve punishment"; but we also deserve LOVE, PARDONING, FORGIVENESS, REDEMPTION AND SALVATION.

"Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of His special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing UNFAILING LOVE. Once again You will have COMPASSION on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean." Micah 7:18&19  (NLT)

We are GOD'S CHILDREN, and like the Israelites before us, WE ARE BLESSED. Because God sent His Son Jesus, we can now "GIVE OUR LIVES TO HIM" and TRUST HIM for our SALVATION. We have been "COVERED WITH HIS BLOOD".

"For He has rescued us from the Kingdom of darkness, and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son, who purchased our FREEDOM  AND FORGAVE OUR SINS." Colossians 1:13&14

"Thank God for HIS LOVE, GRACE AND MERCY; and rejoice in your FREEDOM."

PRAYER AND PRAISE - SEEKING THE LORD'S BLESSING: Read Psalm 106:1-5

This Psalm begins with a PRAYER OF PRAISE for the Lord's goodness and love. Love and kindness endure forever, even to the rebellious Israel. Even more are God's blessings and joy to those "who keep  justice and walk in righteousness."

"Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His faithful love endures forever."

"There is joy for those who deal justly with others  and always do what is right." Psalm 106:3 (NLT)

The Psalmist is pleading with God:

* for His salvation and the salvation the Israelites.

* for greater fellowship with His Father God.

* to share in the inheritance that was promised to them.

"We want to walk closer to God. It begins with praising the Lord, pleading on behalf of himself and a God's rebellious and ungrateful people." Charles Spurgeon

OUT OF EGYPT - SEEKING FORGIVENESS:                     Read Psalm 106:6-12; Exodus 13-15; Nehemiah 9:9-12

The tone of this Psalm changes in Verses 6&7, with the Psalmist's confession of his sins of his ancestors and his own personal transgressions. There was no attempt to blame anyone; he simply made an honest confession. 

"Like our ancestors we have sinned. We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly! Our ancestors in Egypt weree not impressed by the Lord's miraculous deeds. They soon forgot His many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against Him at the Red Sea." Psalm 106:6&7

"We have sinned with our forefathers. The present generation were repeating these sins in the same way." David Guzik.

I was very blessed to have had godly parents who brought me up in the ways of the Lord and His Word. But their were still times I wanted to go "my own way" and to follow the "ways of the world". I could have been easily tempted "to rebel". No matter how "our ancestors have lived", the choice is stil ours. Which direction do we go - God's way or our own!

What a contrast for their contrast the desert was, to their land they had left in Goshen, Egypt. With no way to provide for themselves, they started to complain. God performed daily miracles, providing for their everyday needs; but when they started focusing on the "MATERIAL NEEDS" they stopped focusing ON GOD. 

God was in charge of their journey - SUSTAINING, TESTING and ENCOURAGING them, yet they still rebelled. God's destiny for their lives was SALVATION, just like it is for us. But sometimes we need to "stop along the way", when "God's sovereign plan" and "our earthly plan" collide. 

"We must listen to the Lord so He can change our PRIDE INTO HUMILITY; our DOUBT INTO FAITH; and our ANXIETY INTO PEACE. THE LORD CAN AND WILL DO IT! Don't be impatient when the Lord takes you on a longer route. Accept the path He has for you. Be content with God's purpose for your life." Max Lucado

God doesn't give up on His people, not only for their sake, but for His own. The brilliance of God's grace and miraculous miracles at the Red Sea are a witness to all people of God's great mercy and greatness. After seeing God's miracles, the Israelites praised the Lord.

"But Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm." Exodus 14:13&14 (NLT)

"You saw this misery of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cries from beside the Red Sea. You displayed miraculous signs and wonders against Pharoah, his officials and all his people, for you know how arrogantly they were treating our ancestors. You have a glorious reputation that has never been forgotten. You divided your sea for the people so they could walk on dry land! And then you hurled their enemies into the depths of the sea. They sank like stones beneath the mighty waters." Nehemiah 9:9-11 (NLT)

"Then the people believed His promises. They sang His praises." Psalm 106:2 (NLT)

"The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my SALVATION. This is my God - and I WILL PRAISE HIM. My Father's God and I WILL EXALT HIM." Exodus 15:2 (NIV)

IN THE WILDERNESS - REBELLION & IDOLATRY:       Read Psalm 106:13-23; Numbers 11&16; Exodus 32

The CELEBRATION of the Israelites soon turned to LUSRTING AFTER MATERIAL THINGS. Two years had passed since they had left Egypt. They had brought the Ark of the Covenant, in which they placed God's LAWS AND PROMISES, and they placed it in a Meeting Tent so they could WORSHIP THE LORD. But now they had forgotten what God had done for them, and they continued to test Him in the wilderness. They wanted something that wasn't really good or meaniungful for them.

REBELLION

"Is this the same with us? We see God's miracles, but at the first sign of opposition we forget what God has done for us and are soon rebelling again." James Montgomery Boice

Some of the Levites envied Moses and Aaron because they were humble servants of the Lord. Korah, Dathan ans Abiram led a rebellion that led in their disastrous deaths, and a plague in the land. God was angry with these men, and although Moses sought His mercy; God had chosen His leaders - Moses and Aaron - and he knew they deserved the respect and support of His people. 

"Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites - Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliah, an On, son of Peleth - became inbsolenty and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well know community leaders who had been appointed members of the council." Numbers 16:1&2

"The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: "Seperate yourselves from the assembly so I can put an end to them at once.

But Moses and Aaron fell face down and cried out: "O God, the God who gives breath to all things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?"

Then the Lord said to Moses, "Say to the assembly: "Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiuram"

Moses warned the assembly: "Move back from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything belonging to them....." So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.....As soom as He had finished saying all this, the ground under the, split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah and their posssessions."Numbers 16:20-23, 26&27, 31&32 (NIV)

"Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would not be a benefit to you."  Hebrews 13:17

"We must show loyalty to our leaders when the way is tough, and the future may not look bright. Most of all STAY LOYAL TO OUR GREAT LEADER, who surely knows the way home."

IDOLATRY

This Psalm is not in chronological order, according to the book of Exodus. We now read, how at the foot of Mt Sinai, while Moses what up on the mountain meeting with the Lord, the Israelities were becoming weary and impatient.  He was taking a long time to come down from the mountain, and they decided to build themselves "their own god" - an idol they could worship. They lost faith in God and in Moses. 

This is not just an "Israelite sin". We too, at times get frustrated, and ignore God with our ingratitude and the "worship" of our own "idols". 

When Moses finally came down from the mountain and saw what his people had done, he, like God was very angry. God wanted to destroy them, but Moses just lost his temper  and "smashed the stone tablet" that were written the 10 Commandments. When he had calmed down, he "took a deep breath" and "stood in the breach", pleading with God on behalf of the Israelite people. And God, in His grace and mercy, answered his prayer. 

"I have seen these people", the Lord said to Moses, "and they are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation." Exodus 32:10 (NIV)

"So he said He would destroy them, had not Moses, His chosen One, stood in the breach before Him to keep His wrath from destroying them." Psalm 106:23 (NIV)

"The metiphor, "stood in the breach" is derived from military language, signifying the bravery of a soldier who stands in the breach of a wall, willing to give his life to ward off the enemy. (Ezekial 22:30)

So Moses stood bravely in the presence of the Almighty God on behalf of Israel."

TOWARDS THE PROMISED LAND: GRUMBLING AND MINGLING WITH THEIR ENEMIES-  Read Psalm 106:24-39; Nehemiah 9:24-36; Numbers 14, 25. 

God directed the Israelites back into the wilderness of Paran for 40years, heading towards the Promised Land. He was with them every step of the way, showing them His grace and mercy; though they still began to curse God again.

"In your great mercy you did not destroy them completely or abandon them forever. What a GRACIOUS AND MERCIFUL GOD YOU ARE!" Nehemiah 9:31 (NLT)

GRUMBLING & COMPLAINING

The Israelites were grumbling and complainiung along the way. They did not believe Joshua and Caleb, who had gone on before them to "spy out the land". They despised what God had given to them as their "Promised Land", and they did not heed the voice of the Lord. Because of this, God punished their lack of faith and they faced hardship alomg the way.

"Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His promise. They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the Lord." Psalm 106:24-25 (NIV)

Do have a relationship with God that is based on CONFIDENCE AND TRUST, or do you like to DO THINGS YOUR OWN WAY, in your own strength. Believe that the Lord is always with you, even when you don't see the "evidence of His presence and power". 

"Consider the areas of your life where you find it hard to TRUST GOD. When things are going well or poorly? When you are most self sufficient or when you need to depend on the Lord? PRAY FOR WISDOM IN THESE TIMES!" Charles Swindoll

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5&6 (NIV)

MINGLING WITH THEIR ENEMIES

God gave them over to their enemies. Many times they were delivered, but still they continued to rebel. They were "stiff necked" and stubborn, disobedient to the Lord and following the ways of their enemy nations. 

The Israelites pagan IDOL WORSHIP led them to be self centred and proud. They sacrificed their sons and daughteras to demons and their land was polluted with the blood of "aborted" babies. Again, they worshipped Baal and God sent another plague on His people. 

"God wanted the Israelites to make war against the Canaanites to serve His purpose of judgement. God also wanted the Caananites removed so they would not be an evil influence upon the Israelites, leading them into the worship of idols and their evil ways. Israel's failure to do as God commanded meant the evil influence corrupted God's people." David Guzik

"They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices to lifeless gods; they aroused the Lord's anger by their wicked deeds, and a plague broke out among them. But Phinehas stood upo and intervened, and the plague was checked. This was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come." Psalm 106:23-31 (NIV)

MOSES TROUBLE

Moses demonstrated consistency in following the Lord, but we all have our failures, even when we are leaders. His two main problems in serving the Israelites were:

1. He focused on HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM, and THEY EXPECTED TOO MUCH OF HIM.

2. Sometimes HE EXPECTED TOO MUCH OF THE ISRAELITES.

"By the waters of Meribah they angered the Lord and trouble came to Moses because of them. They rebelled against the Spirit of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips." Psalm 106:32&33 (NIV)

God told Moses to "speak" to the rock, and in his anger he "struck it."

"But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: "Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them."

Serving people for the sake of gratitude will guarantee disapointment. Just when you feel you are beginning to serve them well, they will let you down. The best relationships we need to focus on, like Moses, is our Father God; then we will overflow with love for the people we serve. 

In Leadership - misrepresenting the Lord is a sin. God holds us responsible for "acting too rashly". Moses "staggered and stammered" in his speech, a sign that his anger was overwhelming him. We to need be really careful what we say and do when we are filled with emotion, especially when we are respresenting the Lord.

God still pointed His people to the Promised Land, with new leaders, JOSHUA AND CALEB, and a new generation of people. 

"They will never even see the land I swore to give to their ancestors. None of thosen who have treated me with contempt will ever see it. But my servant Caleb has a different attitude than the others have....You will not enter and occup the land I swore to give you. The only exception will be Caleb, son of Jephunneh and Joshuaa son of Nun." Numbers 14:23,24, &30  (NLT)

"God has a purpose for you in your life and HE WILL FULFILL IT, so fulfill it without grumbling."

EXILE TO BABYLON: GOD'S GRACE, MERCY & SALVATION - Read Psalm 106:40-47;Ezra1:1-8, 3, 6:16-22;Nehemiah 1:8-11,2:11-20, 6:15&16;  Jeremiah 29

Finally, we have these last verses of "EXILE". The Gentile Babylonians had taken the land and the people of Israel. Some of the poorestr people had remained in their homes the farm the land for the Babylonian leaders, but most of the "important, wealthy and educated" people had been taken to Babylon. 

God regarded their afflicted and remembered His covenant with them. As we read in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah, and even the prophet Jeremiah, the Lord was faithful and loving.  He promised to bring all his people back to Jerusalem, to rebuild the city and the Temple, so they could again worship the Lord in their own land. 

"This is what the Lord says, "You will be in Babylon for 70 years. But then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised, and I will bring you homw again. "For I know the plans I have for you", says the Lord, "they are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:10&11

In Verse 47, the Psalmist, who we believe could be Nehemiah, for the tone is very similar to his prayers in his book. He is crying out to the Lord for mercy and salvation.

"Save us, O Lord our God! Gather us back from among the nations, so we can thank your Holy name and rejoice and praise you."  Psalm 101:47

"Then I sai, "O Lord, God of Heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps His covenant of unfailing love with those who love Him and obey His commands. Listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel, I confess that we have sinned against You. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned......Please remember what you told your servant Moses, "If you are unfaithul to me I will scatter you among the nations. But if you return to Me and obey My commands and live by them, then even when you are exiled to the ends of the earth, I will bring you back to the place I have chosen for My Name to be honoured".......... "Oh Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those who us who delight in honouring You".

CONCLUSION - DOXOLOGY - Read Psalm 106:48

Verse 48 is a "DOXOLOGY" - a verse of PRAISE AND HALLELUJAH's. It marks the end of the 4th Book of Psalms. We praise the Lord FOREVER AND EVER, because He is an ETERNAL GOD. We say "AMEN" - glorifying the Lord and saying a BIG THANKYOU for all He has done, and will continue to do for us.

"Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say: "AMEN!" Praise the Lord!" Psalm 106:48 (NLT)

PSALM 105 - THE HISTORY OF GOD'S PEOPLE

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 105, 1 Chronicles 16:8-37; Genesis 37-42; Exodus 1-12, 16&17.

The focus of  Psalm 105 is on God and His people - the Israelites. They are called to praise when David commits Asaph, Zechariah and the other Levites to WORSHIP in the SANCTUARY of GOD'S ARK. He also wanted Asaph to teach his "associates" and the people in David's kingdom the obligations of living a FAITHFUL, LOYAL LIVES IN SERVICE TO GOD.

"David arranged for Asaph and his fellow Levites to SERVE REGULARLY before the ARK OF THE LORD'S COVENANT, doing whatever needed to be done each day." 1 Chronicles 16:37 (NLT)

Their call to praise is followed by a HISTORY OF GOD'S PEOPLE - how God chose the Israelites, His patriarchs - ABRAHAM, ISACC and JACOB, and how he gave them the land of Canaan. David reminded God's people in his kingdom to know how they had been cared for in the past, and how their Father God would continue to watch over them. 

He goes on to tell of the growth of God's people under the leadership of JOSEPH. He was a great "shepherd and rock" for the Israelites when they first lived in Egypt. The Israelites became "too mighty" for the Egyptians who had turned against them. 

"And the Lord multiplied the people of Israel until they became too mighty for their enemies. Then He turned the Egyptians against the Israelites, and they plotted against the Lord's servants."

MOSES then became their leader, called by God to deliver His people from Egypt, Then, as they wandered in the wilderness, the Lord supplied them with manna, water and angels to guide them on the journey. Finally, God kept His promise , and as JOSHUA as a new leader, the new generation of Israelites were brought into the Promised Land of Canaan, This was the "COVENANT" GOD GAVE TO PROTECT AND SAVE HIS PEOPLE.

What an amazing history for God's Jewish people to celebrate. By recounting this history, we as Christians can join with them and be encoured to PRAISE and WORSHIP our Father God - because of HIS FAITHFULNESS.

PRAISE, WORSHIP & TEACHING IN THE SANCTUARY OF GOD - Read Psalm 105:1-12; 1 Chronicles 16:8-22

 "David's praise filled the recemption of God's Ark, demonstrating GENUINE SPIRITUAL WORSHIP."Max Lucado

God is always pleased, as He was with David, with our WORSHIP and PRAISE of Him. David shows us, as he brought Asaph, Zechariah and the other Levites together that FELLOWSHIP IN WORSHIP LEADS TO ENCOURAGEMENT. 

"David appointed the following Levites to lead the people to WORSHIP BEFORE THE ARK OF THE LORD - to invoke His blessings, to give thanks, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel.....On that day David gave to Asaph and his fellow Levites the SONG OF THANKSGIVING TO THE LORD."1 Chronicles 16:4-5, 7   (NIV)

"Individual and corporate worship feed each other. On one hand I need the FELLOWSHIP OF SAINTS and on the othe hand I need to live a consistent LIFE OF WORSHIP. Worship is a way of life. The cycle is complete when we live out the OVERFLOW OF PRAISE and our CONTINUAL HEART OF THANKSGIVING." John MacArthur

WHY DO WE PRAISE THE LORD?

1. Today we HONOUR AND PRAISE the LIVING GOD. We magnify the Lord and attribute to Him the POWER AND GLORY He deserves. God blesses us immeasurably and knows what our future holds.

2. We call upon THE NAME OF THE LORD, not idols.

3. We tell of His WONDROUS WORKS - appreciation of His "redemptive history".

4. We SING SONGS OF PRAISE, "not just for an audience", but as a witness to "God's great & merciful covenant". 

God's people are invited to only SEEK HIM, but also HIS STRENGTH. Paul also reminds us to be, "stron in the Lord and in the power of His might." Ephesians 6:10

David, through his spiritual words, reminds God's people of His mighty deeds. His past miracles encourage us also, as believers, to remain faithful to Him. We are in danger of forgetting God's marvellous works and how God takes care of His people. 

God's covenant with Abraham, Isacc and Jacob was significant because it was passed down to their generatiions - it was an EVERLASTING COVENANT, an allottment of the land of Canaan, an inheritance for what was at first a small group of God's people.

GOD TAKES CARE OF HIS PEOPLE - Read Psalm 105:12-22; Genesis 37, 41&42

Abraham, Isacc and Jacob were patriarchs of God's people, who had seasons of wandering and times when they were settled. During all these times, they were protected by God from kings and other nations.

"The Lord had said to Abram, "Leave your native country, your relatives and your family's family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you abnd curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you."

In the beginning we met a naive and boastful Joseph, sharing his dreams with his brothers; and because of their jealousy Joseph was sold into slavery into Egypt. Joseph spent 13 years in Egypt as a slave, wondering if his dreams would ever be fulfilled. 

David understood that Joseph's injustice and misfortune was ordained by God. His pain and affliction was "all part of God's plan" and "a time of testing". He was "brought low so that in God's timing He would be lifted up."  He "emerged from his captivity well qualified to take the helm in Egypt", to help God's people. He was given the authority over all the "possessions in Pharoah's house" and "over the Princes and Elders."

"The iron fetters were preparing him to wear chains of gold and to make his feet to stand in high places. It is even so with the Lord's afflicted ones, they too shall one day step forth from their prisons to their thrones." Charles Spurgeon

The famine that was sent throughout the land was also "no accident". While severe famine effected his homeland, under Joseph's guidance, Egypt had enough food saved away, to share with it's neighbours. It was then that Jacob sent his sons - Joseph's brothers - to Egypt to buy food. Finally fulfilling Joseph's dreams, his brothers bowed before him. GOD'S PLANS WERE ALSO FULFILLED!

WHAT HAPPENED IN EGYPT? - Read Psalm 105:23-38; Genesis 46-50; Exodus 1:7-13, 16&17

At the invitation of Joseph, Jacob and his family moved to Egypt. Joseph arranged for them to settle in the best land. This was the NEXT STEP IN GOD'S PLAN. 

There was no ill-feeling between Joseph and his brothers. Why? Becaus FORGIVENESS was a surityt!

Joseph understood that "judgement was God's job" and "revenge was irreverent". God gives GRACE to His followers, and this is not based on merit, but on HIS LOVINGKINDNESS. It is an UNCONDITIONAL GIFT. Receive it and accept it, just like Joseph's brothers did and like Joseph you can be GRACEFUL TO OTHERS.

"Thus you shall say to Joseph, "I beg you, please forgive the trespasses of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you." Now please forgive the trespasses of the servants of the God of your father. " And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, "Behold, we are your servants." Joseph said to them: "Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. Therefore, do not be afraid, I will provide for you and your little ones." And HE COMFORTED THEM AND SPOKE KINDLY TO THEM." Genesis 50:17-21 (NKJV)

"For IT IS BY GRACE, YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED, THROUGH FAITH - and this is not from yourselves, IT IS A GIFT FROM GOD." Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)

Jacob was reassured of God's faithfulness, in that "the Lord would not abandon His people". Nearly 300 years elapsed since Jacob and Joseph's deaths. The old priviledged status of the Israelites had gone. God's people had multiplied greatly with intermarriage, and eventually they became stronger than the Egyptian race. The Israelites were no longer welcome, but in fear, the Egyptians hated them, and under the new Pharoah's rule, they were treated as slaves.

"Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increasing in numbers. They becanme so numerous that the land was filled with them. Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.......So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labour, and they built Pilthom and Ramases as store cities for Pharoah." Exodus 1:6-8, 11 (NIV)

At the appointed time God called Moses and his brother Aaron to rescue the people in Egypt. He reassured them that the Egyptians would be punished for the cruelty to God's people. David recorded the plagues God sent upon Egypt, showing that God was indeed GREATER than ALL CREATION and the "Egyptian gods". The plagues lasted for a period of 6 months and each time "GOD DEMONSTRATED HIS ULTIMATE CONTROL". He distinguished betweeh His people, the Israelites and the Egyptians. He controlled "THE EXTENT" and 'THE TIMING" of HIS WORKS, and could even call a halt to them in answer to Moses' and Aaron's prayers. 

Finally Israel's FREEDOM was purchased by the death Egyptian firstborn sons, but Israel was SAVED "BY THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB". Egypt was glad to see them go!

                                                       

"Then He killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home, the pride and joy of each family. The Lord brought His people out of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold; and not one among the tribes of Israeleven stumbled. Egypt was glad when they were gone, for they feared them greatly."

GOD LOOKS AFTER HIS PEOPLE IN THE WILDERNESS - Psalm 105:39-45; Exodus 19:6-25, 23:20-33, 33:12-23

After God rescued the Israelites, He led them into the wilderness - the Sinai Desert. David also gave a "positive remembrance" of Israel's experience in the wilderness, how God met their every need. Rather than focusing on Israel's sin and rebellion, David's purpose was to REMEMBER THE GREAT WORKS OF GOD, rather than the failings of man.

"The Lord spread a cloud above them as a covering and gave them a great fire to light their darkness. They ask for meat and he sent them quail; He satisfied their hunger with manna - bread from Heaven. He split open a rock and water gushed out to form a river through the dry wasteland."

Moses then called a "huge prayer meeting", when he came down from Mt Sinai, after meeting with the Lord. God formed a COVENANT with His people which changed history. The Ten Commandments were "timeless truths" and "clear moral standards" for God's people to live by. Jesus summed up these commands in Matthew 22:37-39:

"Jesus replied, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbour as yourself." Matthew 22:37-39  (NIV)

Thank God for the provision of HIS WORD and the GUIDELINES we too have to LIVE BY, that lead us to a MATURING FAITH. As James says:

"We are to be doers of the word, not merely hearers." James 1:22 (NKJV)

God was FAITHFUL to His people, taking them through the wilderness, then leading their descendents, by Joshua,  to the Promised Land in Canaan. The JOY was for both His people and Himself, for His greatest desire was for them to share in His inheritance.  The same is true for us today. No matter what difficulties we face "in our wilderness", if we "hold fast to God" and trust in Him, He is always with us. 

"Remember, GOD IS ALWAYS WITH YOU wherever you go. Take comfort that wherever you go, GOD'S PRESENCE GOES TOO." Max Lucado

"The Lord replied, "MY PRESENCE WILL GO WITH YOU and I will give you rest."

"I KNOW THE LORD IS ALWAYS WITH ME. I will not be shaken, for HE IS RIGHT BESIDE ME." Psalm 16:8 (NLT)

CONCLUSION

"Near the climax of God's story, motivated by HIS LOVE and DIVINITY, He surprised everyone. HE BECAME A MAN - determined to PROVE HIS LOVE for His creation. He walked incognito through His own world. His callous hands - those of a carpenter and SON OF MAN - TOUCHED WOUNDS and His compassionate tongue - of a SON OF GOD - TOUCHED HEARTS."

At the conclusion of this Psalm, David again calls us to PRAISE AND WORSHIP THE LORD. Why?

So we can remember HIS WORKS. Yes! When we WORSHIP THE LORD our Spirits are lifted and our focus is toward Heaven. With our focus on GOD AND HIS PROMISES. we can "break through every worry, fear, stress and exhaustion." WORSHIP AND PRAISE draws us near to Jesus and His Father and reminds us why we are living on earth.

PRAISE 104 - PRAISE GOD , OUR CREATOR

INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 104, 8, 100, 150

Sir Robert Grant was an English politician in the 1830's, and he was very familiar with royalty, having been appointed a Governor in the Province of India in 1833. When he read Psalm 104, he first pictured Jesus Christ as the King. He was then inspired by God's majesty and splendour, and he began, like David to "worship the Lord as King."

"Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, You are very great; your clothed with splendour and majesty." Psalm 104:1 (NIV)

We know our God first as our Maker and Creator, but He is also our "defender, redeemer and friend".

Sir Robert Grant walked day by day with His Redeemer, enjoying His fellowship just as we can. We can remember Him too, "as royalty", but as His child and His friend.

"I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end He will stand on the earth." Job 19:25 (NIV)

This is titled as an "anonymous Psalm" but it is believed that David was actually the writer. It began ab ended as many of his other Psalms - with the "praise and blessing of his soul". We know that David appreciated God's creation and believed that He sustained the universe. He bears a witness to HIS MAJESTY, SPLENDOUR AND STRENGTH.

"When I consider your Heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?"

"Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture." Psalm 100:1-3 (NIV)

This is indeed a wonderful pictorial Psalm, speaking of God as a "great Creator and sustainerr of life".

The Psalmist "conjures up the marvels, grandeurs and details" of all the earth, it creatures and the heavens - the sun, the moon and stars, "in all its completion and perfection."  When we contemplate God's creation ourselves and we catch sight of GOD'S GLORY. Like David and Sir Robert, all we want to do is SING HIS PRAISES. 

"I will sing of the Lord all my life; I WILL PRAISE TO MY GOD AS LONG AS I LIVE......PRAISE THE LORD, MY SOUL, PRAISE THE LORD." Psalm 104:33&35

GOD'S CREATION - BOTH HEAVEN & EARTH:                   Read Psalm 104:1-9, 150

When David first "praises the Lord" it is with "his whole being (his soul)". He looks up to see HOW GREAT GOD IS. 

*At first he sees the glory of the Heavens, where God has the garments and the throne of a King. With a stately horse, a carriage and angelic servants, God is indeed the GREAT, SOVEREIGN KING OF KINGS. 

"Heaven offers praise to God's power and strength. God is not a higher power, He is the HIGHEST POWER." Michael Yousoff

"Praise the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty Heavens. Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord. Praise the Lord." Psalm 150:1,2&6 (NIV)

"Amen! Praise and glory, wisdom and thanks,  honour, power and strength be to our God forever and ever. Amen." Revelation 7:12 (NIV)

*  Our God is also an AMAZING CREATOR, who we know "founded the earth and settled the boundaries of the seas". Not only does He "rebuke the seas" but  He "keeps them within His limits".

"You are worthy , our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you CREATED ALL THINGS, and by your will they were CREATED AND HAVE THEIR BEING."

 Revelation 4:11 (NIV)

Nature is GOD'S WORSHIP. Take a look at God's creation if you want if you want to experience His power and strength. Last week I was travelling through Outback Queensland. I confess, at times I slept; but when my eyes were open I loved looking out the window so I could enjoy God's beautiful creation.

"What is the atmosphere of your life? Do your words of praise line up with your worship of God in Heaven? Are you involved with a community of believers that regularly and enthusiastically praise the Lord. The faithful practices of true praise puts a person in direct line with all of the power available in Heaven and earth." Michael Yousoff

GOD CARES FOR ALL HIS CREATURES -                          Read Psalm  104:10-18, 8:1-6, 139:14, Genesis 1

God also CARES FOR ALL THE CREATURES HE CREATED. He provides their food and water, "including the cattle and wild animals". God protects and provides suitable housing for even the smallest animals - like the "birds" and the "badgers". They "build nests" and shelter under "the rocks".

What you see most out in Queenslands's Outback are cattle, wild horses, and what I admire most, are the beautiful birds. 

Oh, and let's not forget God's people, who He especially CREATED FOR A PUROSE, and CARES FOR.

"So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them." Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

"What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour." Psalm 8:4&5

And what about the plants and trees? These too are something that I enjoy, and although there is a lot of desert in the Outback - that's the time I usually sleep - you can also see places of green, parks, and trees. David  specifically speaks about the orchards with his grapes and the Cedar of Lebanon. These have been created and cared for by God, for His children.

WE PRAISE GOD FOR ALL HIS CREATION -                     Read Psalm 104:19-30; Nehemiah 9:5&6

"Blessed be Your glorious Name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. You alone are the Lord. You made the Heavens, even the highest Heavens, and all the starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of Heaven worship you." Nehemiah 9:5&6 (NIV)

Step into the night sky and be amazed, just as the readers of this Psalm were originally, in David's time, and that of Nehemiah. We are to PRAISE AND EXALT GOD FOR:

* The days, nights and seasons in which God provides our time for work and rest.

* The oceans and God's restorations of His sea creatures.

* God's prompt and plentiful provision for all His creatures.

* God's absolute power and sovereignty.

"Lord, you made things with your WISDOM. You mad them all." Psalm 104:24 (ICB)

CONCLUSION - Read Psalm 104:31-35, 150. 

David concludes this Psalm as he has with many others:

* WITH A PRAISE TO GOD - REJOICING IN ALL HIS WORKS

"PRAISE opens us up so that we can pray with greater faith and greater effectiveness. PRAISE reflects our acknowledgement of all GOD IS and and that GOD HAS DONE, IS DOING and HAS PROMISED TO DO. PRAISE sets up the stage  for prayer that is focused, specific and powerful."

"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and My Redeemer." Psalm 19:14 (NIV)

*WITH TERROR TO THE EVILDOERS - FORGIVENESS OF SINNERS

"You are an all powerful Father. You can do all things. You are ALL MERCIFUL TO YOUR CHILDREN, Father. You desire to bless us in all our ways. YOU ARE PATIENT and FORGIVING, Father. You long to draw all your children close to you. You are the VICTOR OVER THE ENEMY om every situation and circumstance, Father. YOU HAVE ALREADY WON THE BATTLE AGAINST THE DEVIL." Michael Youssof

When we close our prayers with praise, just like this Psalm, we, like David, are yielding to the Lord - including all authority to God, through whom He may choose to provide for us, protect us, or reveal Himself to us. We are yielding all honour to God, giving Him credit for any good work that is accomplished on our behalf.
