PSALM 118 - A PSALM FOR EASTER

INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 118; 2 Samuel 6:12-18;           Ezra 3:8-13; Matthew 21:1-11

This is a great time of year to read this Psalm. It is not only the final Egyptian Hallel Psalm which is sung at Passover Festivsals, but it is also a great Messianic Psalm celebrating the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ, with his DEATH ON THE CROSS and his RESURRECTION,

Mose commentators believe it was written by David, though it does not have a stated author. It is likely to have been first sung when David and his people brought the Ark of the Lord back into the city of Jerusalem, after it had been taken by the Philistines.

"Then David danced befor the Lord with all his might.... David and all the house of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the trumpet." 2 Samuel 6:14&15 (NLT)

In Ezra Chapter 3, David is mentioned at the restoration of the New Temple in Jerusalem, when the people had returned after their Babylonian exile.

"When the builders completed the foundation of the Lord's Temple, the priests put on their robes and took their places to blow their trumpets. The Levites, descendents of Asaph, clashed their cymbals to praise the Lord, just as King David had prescribed." Ezra 3:10 (NLT)

"It shows David's hand of the Master and his spirit and style, and clearly David's grand ability, the subject was mobility." Adam Clarke, cited by David Guzik.

This was also Jesus' Psalm - a Messianic prophecy - "a song of triump", as we see Jesus coming into Jerusalenm on what we call "Palm Sunday"

"The procession carries branches, moving from the Temple Gateway (the Gates of Jerusalem) to the Altar (the Cross). " Pat and David Alexander.

"How much these words in Psalm 118 would have meant to Jesus as He sung them in the upper room, the night before His crucifixioon." G. Campbell Morgan. cited by David Guzik.

On Easter Sunday, we today, as Jesus' followers often sing parts of this Psalm to celebrate, with JOY AND GLADNESS, the RESURRECTION OF OUR SAVIOUR,.

"Christians see in this movement from HUMILIATIION TO EXULTATION a foreshadow of Jesus. He is RESCUED FROM DEATH, a new exodus, a fresh sigh that GOD'S STEADFAST LOVE ENDURES FOREVER." Richard Clifford, cited by Nacy Koster.

"But now CHRIST IS RISEN, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man came the RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD.                                  1 Corinthians 15:20&21

WHAT A WONDERFUL PSALM IS THIS FOR THE EASTER SEASON!

GOD'S LOVE ENDURES FOREVER - Read Psalm 118:1-4; 1 John 4:7-21

"Give thanks to the Lord for HE IS GOOD, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER."                     Psalm 118:1 (NIV)

David "stirs up" everyone to join with him in his "cheerful acknowledgement" of GOD'S GOODNESS. Many of his Psalms call upon God's people to sing PRAISE AND THANKS  for HIS GOODNESS. David was full of God's goodness too, being "a man after God's own heart". It was always on God's mind and He loved to share it with others.

"GOD'S GOODNESS IS SO GREAT and apparent that it deserves emphatic PRAISE." David Guzik

David also loved to celebrate GOD'S MERCY AND LOVE. In the ancient Jewish context, these verses are part of a Temple Liturgy, used in Festivals, particularly the Passover. We hear the jubilant "calland response" to Isael (God's People), the House of Aaron (Priests) and the Gentiles (those who fear the Lord).

God's people who proceed to the Temple with these words on their lips are "righteous" an d "victorious". Since God has saved them in the past, they knew HIS LOVE AND MERCY could be depended upon in the future. They knew "it would never be taken from His people". This isn't the only passage in the Bible that speaks of GOD'S LOVE.

"Long ago the Lord said to Israel: "I HAVE LOVED YOU, my people, WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE". With an UNFAILING LOVE I have drawn  you to myself." Jeremiah 31:3

"I am convinced that nothing can seperate you from GOD'S LOVE. Neither death nor life, neith angels nor demons, neither our fears today or our worries about tomorrow - not even the powers of hell can seperate us from GOD'S LOVE. Indeed, nothing in all creation can seperate us FROM THE LOVE OF GOD that is REVEALED IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD." Romans 8:38&39

"God showed how much HE LOVED US by sending His Son into the world, so that we might have eternal life through Him...... THIS IS REAL LOVE - not that we loved God but that HE LOVED US and has sent His Son to be a sacrifioce for our sins." 1 John 4:8&10

David, who we believe to be the writer of this Psalm,  recently expressed THANKS FOR GOD'S LOVE. It is a tone of POSITIVETY AND APPRECIATION for all that He has done for us, through ther coming of His Son - and what He will continue to do,

"This is the last Hallel Psalm that Jesus would have sung at the Passover. He went to the CROSS with complete knowledge that His FATHER'S LOVE AND MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER." David Guzik

TRUST IN THE LORD - Read Psalm 118:5-8; Proverbs 3:5&6

ANSWERED PRAYERS

"In my distress, I PRAYED TO THE LORD. The LORD ANSWERED ME and set me free."          Psalm 118:5

David was in great distress and suffered many trials, but this gave him even more experience of God's goodness. Jesus too suffered, especially when it came to the time when it was coming up to his crucifixion.  His friends forsook Him at his greatest time of need - at the CROSS.

"It is wonderful to think of Jesus singing these words on the night he was betrayed and arrested. Jesus would call on His Father and receive a faithful answer to his prayers in the garden"
David Guzik

But, both David and Jesus both recognized that they had their FATHER'S LOVE in their lives, and He was always  by their side no matter what they faced,. David understood that in the midst of calamity and loneliness - GOD WAS WITH HIM, "He promised to guard and cherish His people forever".  We can live in assurance, calm, knowing He will always LISTEN TO OUR PRAYERS AND ANSWER THEM. They may not be answered in the way we want, but we know He cares for us and knows our every need.

"The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid. What can mere man do to me? HE IS MY HELPER.  I look in triumph on enemies." Psalm 118:6&7

"You don't need to be alone. We have assurance that in the storms of life Jesus is on our side to share them with us and renew our courage." Billy Graham

TRUST IN THE LORD

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean  not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5&6

"It is better to TRUST THE LORD than to trust in people. Is is better to TRUST THE LORD than to trust princes." Psalm 118:8&9

David believed in the Lord Jesus long before He came to the earth and he wanted his people to trust in Him too. Despite trouble around us, we can love and TRUST THE LORD. We have nothing to fear if we put our TRUST both Jesus and His Father.

"Although you may be tempted to trust in earthly things more than God, have more confidence in Him than anyone else." Max Lucado

THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND MY SALVATION -            Read Psalm 118:10-14; Exodus 15

In the pattern of Hebrew poetry this part of the Psalm is very repititious. David knew that were times that he was surrounded by enemiesm, but he also knew that the POWER and VICTORY was not of himself, but "IN THE NAME OF THE LORD". David triumphed over his enemies has he continued to trust in the Lord.

"The Lord is my STRENGTH and my SONG; He has become my SALVATION." Exodus 15:2a

Quoting Moses and Miriam  song from Exodus 15, David knew that only God could be His "STRENGTH AND SONG". To those who trusted in Him, He also became THEIR "SALVATION". This was true from God's people, the Israelite, and we know, when Jesus died on the cross, it became true for us today.

OUR STRENGTH

God is the resource for all our needs, and just as Moses led the people to believe, He would continue to be their strength always, as they travelled through the "wilderness, " He is our strength each day.

"In your unfailing love you led you people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling." Exodus 15:13 (NIV)

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1 (NKLV)

OUR SONG

God gives JOY an d HAPPINESS in OUR SONG. We find our purpose in our life in Him.

"Therefore, you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and you HEART WILL REJOICE; and YOUR JOY no one will take from you."  John16:22 (NKJV)

OUR SALVATION

We can trust God for VICTORY and DELIVERANCE from all sin and evil. It is important to SEEK GOD so we can rest in HIS SALVATION.

"For by grace you have been saved throiugh faith, and not of yourselves, it is a gift from God."
Epesians 2:8 (NKJV)

David triumphed in his His trust because:

* The Lord was on His side.
* The Lord stood up for him.
* The Lord was His strength, song and salvation.

THE LORD IS MY LIFE AND MY VICTORY -                         Read Psalm 118: 15-18, Romans 6&15; Hebrews 12

JOY AND VICTORY

As well as a Passover Hymn, this song was sung as one of "JOY and VICTORY" at the Feast of the Tabernacles. Repeatedly David praised the "right hand of God", recognizing His strength, power and might.

"SHOUTS OF JOY AND VICTORY resound in the tents of the righteous. "THE LORD'S RIGHT HAND HAS DONE MIGHTY THINGS. THE LORD'S RIGHT HAND IS LIFTED HIGH. The Lord's right hand has done mighty things." Psalm 118:15&16 (NIV)

We may feel weak, but GOD IS OMNIPOTENT and acts "VALIANTLY" on our behalf. We need to "exalt Him with OUR PRAISES."

I WILL NOT DIE, BUT LIVE!

"I will not die, BUT LIVE and TELL WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE." Psalm 118:17

David was confident that God would keep him from death. Jesus too was confident of his truth. He knew that "death had no hold on Him". He knew that He would RAISED TO LIFE after His crucifixion.

"These words had great meaning for Jesus before the cross. He would endure His Father's puroseful suffering and yet not be given over to eternal death". David Guzik

"We are sure of this because Jesus Christ was RAISED FROM THE DEAD and He will never die again. Death no longer has any power over Him." Romans 6:9

"Martin Luther was a great man of God who faced threats on his life because of his reformation preaching. It is believed he had this verse written on the wall of his study: "I SHALL NOT DIE, BUT LIVE; AND RECOUNT THE DEEDS OF THE LORD." Charles Spurgeon

Martin Luther is said to have "a strong connection with this Psalm". Like David, his love for and faith in God was "passionate". He was inspired by Jesus' words:

"I am the Resurrection and the Life. He who believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live."
John 11:27 (NIV)

Just as David was delivered by God, so Christ empowers us and "snatches us out of the realms of death". David understood that he needed the chastisement (discipline) of the Lord for training and correction. But he would not allow it to destroy him. The same is true for us. Like David and Luther, God wants us to proclaim to others the valiant and glorious things that God and His Son have done - particularly HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION.

"The Lord has punished me severly, but he did not let me die." Psalm 118:18 (NLT)

"No discipline is enjoyable while is it happening; it is painful. But afterward, there will be a PEACEFUL HARVEST of RIGHT LIVING for those who are trained in its way."                                                                                                                 Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)

PALM SUNDAY - Read Psalm 118:19-21; 2 Samuel 6;            Ezra 6:13-22; Matthew 21:1-11

"Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them and I will praise the Lord."
                                                                                                    Psalm 118:19 (NKJV)

David probably had in mind when he wrote this Psalm "the triumphal entry into Jerusalem - the Holy City." With gates open, he could go through and PRAISE THE LORD. This would probably have been the time when he had been bring the Ark of God back into his city.

"David dance with all his might  before the Lord.....David and all the Israelites shouted with joy and blew their trumpets as they brought the ARK OF THE LORD into the city.....David put up a Tent for the Ark of the Lord, and then the Israelites put the ARK in its place in the TENT."                                                                                                               2 Samuel 6:14,15&17

Ezra cited this Psalm when the people came into the new Jerusalem, The ARK would now be placed inside the TEMPLE, and the Priests and the priests could go in at certain times into "the presence of the Lord", to make sacrifices of the Jewish people and the "non Jewish people who had given up their unclean ways."

"This is the gate of the Lord, through which the righteous shall enter." Psalm 118:20

"Blessed be your wonderful name. It is more wonderful than blessing and praisings. You are the Only God....the angels of God worship you." Nehemiah 6:5&6b

Finally we think about Jesus. David is prophesying Jesus' entry into to gates of Jerusalem, on the day we call "Palm Sunday", the beginning of Holy Week.

"David promised to give thanks to God for our coming Messiah  and ultimate salvation."            Matthew Henry.

This took place to fulfill another prophecy:

"Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion. Shout, daughter Jerusalem. SEE YOUR KING COMES TO YOU, RIGHTEOUS AND VICTORIOUS, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." Zechariah 9:9

"Jesus was in the centre of the procession and the people all around Him were shouting, "Praise God, the Son of David. Blessings on the One who comes in the name of the Lord. PRAISE GOD IN THE HIGHEST HEAVEN." Matthew 21:9

"A large crowd of Pharisees and visitors took palm branches and went down to the road to meet Him: They shouted: "Praise God! Blessings on the One who comes in the Name of the Lord. HAIL THE KING OF ISRAEL." John 12:13

"David desired admission into God's sanctuary, there to celebrate the glory of the COMING MESSIAH. He is the "GATE OF THE TEMPLE", by whom the righteous shall enter."               Matthew Henry

After completing His work at the CROSS and HIS RESURRECTION, Jesus would be received into HEAVEN'S GATES through HIS ASCENSION. We too will enter these GATES if we righteously accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and SING HIS PRAISES.

"Yes, I AM THE GATE. Those who come through me will be saved. They will come and go freely with good pastures." John 10:9

THE LORD IS MY CORNERSTONE - Read Psalm 118:22&23; Isaiah 28:16; Acts 4:1-21; 1 Peter 2:4-10

"The STONE which the builder's rejected have now become THE CORNERSTONE."Psalm 118:22

"We don't know what personal experience led David to write these words, but we do know it was a prophetic statement about Jesus,  because it certainly fulfilled His work." David Guzik

The principal reference to the CORNERSTONE is JESUS CHRIST. Jesus was rejected and humiliated by His own people:

* They didn't approve of His origin.
* They didn't approve of His education.
* They didn't approve of His lack of religious tradition.
* They didn't approve of His choice of friends,.

"How does He know so much when He hasn't been trained?" John 7:25

"But some Pharisees said: "Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?"
Luke 6:2

"The Pharisees asked His disciples: "Why does your teacher each with such scum?" Matthew 9:11

We do know that Jesus is the ONE referred to in these other scriptures; both prophetic and after he had returned to His Father.

"Therefore, thus says the Lord God: "I lay in Zion a STONE for a FOUNDATION, a TRIED STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNERSTONE, A SURE FOUNDATION; whoever believes will not act hastily."Isaiah 28:16

"The STONE which the builders rejected has become A CHIEF CORNERSTONE. Their SALVATION is in no one else! God has given no other Name under Heaven by which you must be SAVED." Acts 4:11&12

"Behold, I lay in Zion A CHIEF CORNERSTONE, elect and precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame." 1 Peter 2:6

The CORNERSTONE was an important STONE that held together two stones at the corner - THE FOUNDATION - it stabilized all the other stones. The "CHIEF CORNERSTONE - JESUS CHRIST" - is our foundation, through which we have SALVATION AND ETERNAL LIFE.

"Jesus would have had tears in His eyes as He sang these verses, He knew he would be rejected, yet He would still be the 'CHIEF CORNERSTONE'. " David Guzik

RESURRECTION SUNDAY - LET US REJOICE  -             Psalm 118:24-27

"This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24

David wrote Psalms in the "wilderness" and in "caves". He wasn't always in a palace! But he felt that every day deserved a chance to be a good one - a chance to REJOICE! Why? Because they were all GOD'S DAYS! David's days, like ours, weren't always "stress free", but he didn't do a lot of grumbling. Like Paul, he learnt that it was better to PRAISE AND THANK THE LORD.

"Always be full of joy in the Lord! I say it again - REJOICE! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don't worry about anying, instead, PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING. Tell God what you need and THANK HIM for all He has done. Then you will experience GOD'S PEACE, which exceeds anything we can understand. HIS PEACE will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:4-7 (NLT)

You can't change, alter or improve PAST DAYS, so don LIVE TODAY WITH REGRETS. You can't live TODAY with the cares of TOMORROW; so just give each NEW DAY to the Lord. Don't worry about what the future may hold!   GIVE EACH NEW DAY GOD HAS MADE A CHANCE!

* Saturate your day with GOD'S GRACE.
* Enturst your day with GOD'S OVERSIGHT.
* Accept HIS DIRECTION!

                                         FILL YOUR DAY WITH GOD!

"The faithful love of the Lord never ends. His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh every morning." Lamentations 3:22&23 (NLT)

We will rejoice and be glad, like David,  with each new day God has made.

"Easter is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." Nancy Koester

A few days ago we celebrated GOOD FRIDAY, when we remember, Jesus our Redeemer and Saviour, who died on the cross for our sins - "His great atoning sacrifice". Although we now celebration Resurrection Sunday, we still need to immerse ourselves in his GRACE AND REDEMPTION.  Because of both Jesus' DEATH AND RESURRECTION we can now live a NEW ETERNAL LIFE.

"Now if we died with Christ, WE ALSO LIVE WITH HIM. For we know that since Christ was RAISED FROM THE DEAD, He cannot die again, death no longer has mastery over Him. The death He died, He died for sin once for all; BUT THE LIFE HE LIVES, HE LIVES TO GOD.... for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE in Christ Jesus our Lord."                                                                                                                Romans 6:8-10, 23

"The Lord is shining upon us. Take the sacrifice and bind it with cords on the altar."   Psalm 118:27

"Jesus said: "I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness but will have the LIGHT OF LIFE." John 8:12

There is a brief, but important focus on Yahweh, the TRUE GOD, who gave His Son willingly to die for us. God showed us the LIGHT - JESUS CHRIST - He shone upon us so we could have ETERNAL LIFE in Him. As he sang these word "to bind" him to the "the altar" (the cross) Jesus was making a "holy sacrifice". These were leading into David's words of significant PRAISE.

"Jesus echoed these words in the Upper Room, singing His praise and exultation, evidence of Hius submission to God His Father."  David Guzik

CONCLUSION: PRAISE and THANKS - Read Psalm 118:28&29;

"You are my God and I WILL PRAISE YOU, You are my God, I WILL EXALT YOU! GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD for He is good. His faithful love endures forever." Psalm 118: 28&29

David concludes with a THANKFUL acknowledgment to His Father God. He began with "heartfelt, exuberant praises" and ends with the same.

* He will PRAISE AND EXALT THE LORD.
* He will GIVE THANKS TO JESUS - His great Redeemer.
* In  Him, he has shown  HIS GREAT LOVE AND MERCY  "that endures forever."

David give PRAISE for His PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE blessings. He does not believe in "delaying praise or thanks for any reason". Not only does he sing HIS OWN PRAISES, but he encourages others to to join him. Christians today can still be assured that if they START EACH DAY WITH PRAISE we can END IT WITH PRAISE, no matter what our circumstances.

"Always be joyful. Never stop praying. BE THANKFUL IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, for this is God's will for all who belong to Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)

Jesus Himself received unending LOVE AND MERCY from His Father, and we can be assured it will be given to us, through Him.

"What better close to a royal song! The Psalmist could not have RISEN to anything HIGHER. He had reached the heart of the Grandeur and THERE HE PAUSED!"  Charles Spurgeon

PSALM 117 - LET EVERYONE SING GOD'S PRAISES

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 117

Psalm 117 is the middle Chapter in the Bible. It is also the shortest and "sweetest" Psalm, full of "amazing truths".

"It is very little in letter but exceedingly large in Spirit......it calls upon all mankind to PRAISE THE LORD." Charles Spurgeon

"Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol Him all you peoples." Psalm 117:1 (NIV)

This is the second last of the Egyptian Hallel Psalms, which were sung before and after the Jewish Passover Meal. We remember that Jesus sang this SONG OF PRAISE with His disciples in the Upper Room on the night of His betrayal and address.

The question is not whether WE SHOULD praise the Lord, but WHY SHOULD WE praise Him. I have been studying the Psalms for many years now and David has continually convinced me that this is indeed THE WAY THE LIVE MY LIFE. But, like David, also did in his life, we too often lose our often loose our focus and forget WHO we are praising - OURSELVES,  OTHERS or GOD.

"Whether we are in the MIDST OF BLESSING, or in the MIDST OF SUFFERING, you must PRAISE THE LORD., Whether you believe you NEED GOD, or YOU DON'T, you must PRAISE THE LORD, There are NO OPTIONS!" Don Liesemer

"For His UNFAILING LOVE is powerful and HIS FAITHFULNESS endures forever. PRAISE THE LORD." Psalm 117:2 (NLT)

WHO PRAISES THE LORD? - Read Psalm 117:1;              Romans 15:7-13

The Psalmists calls "all nations", specifically the Gentiles, to PRAISE THE LORD."

"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, Praise Him, all you peoples of the earth." Romans 15:11 (NLT)

Verse 1 was not a regular command to the Jewish people to PRAISE THE LORD, it was a "global invitation". God's salvation went beyond the border of Israel. God's call to the Gentiles and other nations showed that He wants us all to have a relationship with His Son Jesus Christ.

"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world, through Him, might be saved." John 3:17 (NKJV)

Paul also reminds us that this offer of salvation and eternal life is for both the Jews and the Gentiles. What more do we have to PRAISE GOD FOR? Paul references these verses from Psalm 17 and Isaiah several times, to help drive home "GOD'S REDEMPTION  PLAN FOR THE GENTILES."

"Among you also are called to Jesus Christ; to all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints." Romans 1:3&4 (NLT)

"This is what the Psalmist meant when he wrote: "For this I will PRAISE YOU AMONG THE GENTILES; I will SING PRAISES TO YOUR NAME." And in another place it is written: "REJOICE WITH HIS PEOPLE, YOU GENTILES." Romans 15:9&10 (NLT)

"And in another place Isaiah said: "The heir of David's throne will come and He will rule over the Gentiles. THEY WILL PLACE THEIR HOPE IN HIM." Romans 15:12 (NLT)

WHY DO WE PRAISE THE LORD? - Read Psalm 117:2

The Psalmist gives 2 reasons why we should praise the Lord:

1. HIS MERCIFUL KINDNESS (LOVE) that is great.

2. HIS TRUTH (FAITHFULNESS) that is eternal.

GOD'S LOVE, MERCY AND KINDNESS

We've been singing about GOD'S LOVE our whole lives. Why do still feel we need to earn it? God's love is different than any other:

* He loves us even when we at our worse.
* He promises to always love us.
* We can never get outside of God's tender love.

When we think about GOD'S GREAT LOVE in sending His Son Jesus to die for us. "we are drawn to PRAISE AND WORSHIP."

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but will have eternal life." John 3:16 (NIV)

"For His MERCIFUL KINDNESS is great toward us." Psalm 117:2a (NIV)

"God has shown mercy mixed with kindness to the very highest degree. We can all join with grateful acknowledgement and in PRAISE THAT IS DUE." Charles Spurgeon

"GOD'S LOVE is the fountain of all comforts and HIS FAITHFULNESS the fountain of all our hopes. We must PRAISE THE LORD for both." Matthew Henry

GOD'S EVERLASTING FAITHFULNESS

There are many things in this life that will let you down, but God is not one of them. GOD'S TRUTH IS COMPLETELY FAITHFUL! That thought should lead us to PRAISE. God always keeps His promises. Here are just a few:

* Salvation for everyone - when we seek his forgiveness.
* His Second Coming  - when we will sing His praises in the New Jerusalem.

"The truth of the Lord endures forever and He keeps His covenant promises. He will keep every single covenant promise to all those who PUT THEIR TRUST IN HIM." Charles Spurgeon

"The faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord" Psalm 117:2b (NLT)

The Bible is full of exhortations to PRAISE THe LORD. But why are they so important? PRAISING THE LORD is one thing we can sure we will continue to do in eternity.

"Amen! PRAISE, glory, wisdom, THANKS, honour, power and strength be to our God forever and ever." Revelation 7:12

But let's not wait till we get to Heaven. Let's not HOLD BACK OUR PRAISES each and every day! For God's MERCY, KINDNESS, LOVE, TRUTH and FAITHFULNESS are for EVERYONE - JEW and GENTILE - RIGHT NOW, TODAY!!

CONCLUSION - THANKSGIVING ALL YEAR ROUND - Read 1 Chronicles 16:8-13, 23-26

This Psalm concludes as it began, with another HALLELUJAH - PRAISE THE LORD!

The beautiful hymn: "We Plough the Fields and Scatter" is usually sung in America during their Thanksgiving, and in Church Harvest Festival Services. It could also be a good song, like this Psalm, for Jewish Passover Festivals. David wrote many Psalms to guide his PRAISE AND WORSHIP, but it wasn't only during Passove and Thanksgiving Festivals.

"Give PRAISE TO THE LORD, proclaim His Name,  make known among the nations what He has done.......LET THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO SEEK THE LORD, REJOICE."                                                                                                            1 Chronicles 16:8&10

We can also sing these praise songs "ALL YEAR ROUND", when we want to remind ourselves of God's love, goodness and faithfulness. Two centuries ago Matthius Claudius, the son of a Pastor, a German Poet, wrote:

"We thank thee O Father, for all things bright and good.
The seed time, the harvest; our life, our health, our food.
Now gifts we offer, for all Thy love imparts,
But that which Thou desires, our humble, thankful hearts.

All good gifts around us are sent from Heaven above.
Then THANK THE LORD, O THANK THE LORD, for all His love."

We need to BE THANKFUL EVERY DAY, all year round; for God supplies all our needs! PRAISE THE LORD!

PSALM 116 - DEALING WITH GRIEF GOD'S WAY

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 116

"Grief is part of being human, but WE CAN EMBRACE GRIEF as GOD EMBRACES US."                                                                                                                                      Dr Tony Evans

Gried is part of life. We can't get rid of it or ignore it, but we can face it's "challenges" and "embrace it".

Saved from death, in answer to his prayers, this unknown Psalmist makes a "thank offering" in the Temple. There were memories of terrible times, when the "grave" was close and fear was "vividly present". He understood the "grind of grief and sorrow too well." We don't know the details that brought him to his knees "in mourning", but we can gather from the "clues" that it invoked DEATH.

"The cords of death encompassed him as well as the terrors of Sheol (the grave). He was brought low and the Lord rescued him from his tears." Charles Swindoll.

After spending time in GOD'S PRESENCE the Psalmist was "put firmly back on his feet"; with a clear perspective of life and death. What began with words of sorrow, ended with PRAISES AND HALLELUJAHS!

"After a close call with death, the unknown Psalmist THANKS GOD for answering his prayers; and PRAISES HIM for his deliverance. PRAISE should be a NATURAL RESULT OF ANSWERED PRAYER." Max Lucado

"I will offer you a THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE and call on the name of the Lord. HALLELUJAH." Psalm 116:17&19  (NRSV)

I LOVE THE LORD - Read Psalm 116:1-11

The first half of this Psalm - Verses 1-11 - are the Psalmist lament, a man surrounded by grief and sorrow. Yet he knows that the Lord is always with him.

* The Lord hears him.
* The Lord cares for him.
* The Lord will rescue him.

And as we read these verses we too can receive encouragement and joy, knowing that they are true for us too, if we LOVE GOD and PRAY TO HIM.

1. THE LORD HEARS US

"I love the Lord because HE HAS HEARD MY VOICE  and MY SUPPLICATIONS. Because HE HAS INCLINED HIS EAR TO ME, therefore, I will call on Him as long  as I live."                                                                                                                   Psalm 116:1&2 (NIV)

Other versions of the Scriptures talk about the Lord in a similar way:

* "listening to his prayers".
* "hearing his cries for mercy".
* "turnin His ear to hin."

God pays attention to what we have to say when we come to HIM IN PRAYER. "He leans closer to truly hear what you have to say".

WHY IS PRAYER SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE GRIEVING PROCESS?

When we are in need, specifically in times of grief and sorrow, coming to God in prayer, "brings us in harmony with His will."  Grief also brings ANGER, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION - to name just a few emotions - but God is always ready to HEAR US!

"The important thing is to CALL ON HIM and to TRUST IN HIM to ANSWER YOU."
                                                                                                Dr Tonyy Evans

"Answer me when I call you. my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer." Psalm 4:1 (NIV)

2. THE LORD CARES FOR U

"The LORD IS GRACIOUS and righteous; OUR GOD IS FULL OF COMPASSION...... I was brought low. HE SAVED ME." Psalm 119:5&6b

Some tragic circumstances had surrounded the Psalmist. They had caused him to fear that he was near death:

* "the chords of death entangled me and wrapped me in anguish".
* "the ropes of death bound me."
* "the torments of Sheol (the grave) overcame and took hold of me."
* "I encountered trouble and sorrow."
* "I suffered distress and anguish."

Grief and sorrow became so intense and death felt imminent. He even confessed to doubting the Lord - "foolishness, simpleness, helplessness" - but the LORD WAS HIS PROTECTOR AND SAVIOUR. He called to God in distress. His brief prayer: "SAVE ME" expressed a deep plea of desperation. In this prayer he affirmed 3 of God's attributes:

* HIS GRACIOUSNESS - extended in "undeserved favour."
* HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS - "depicting integrity"
* HIS COMPASSION - a deep feeling of "God's tender care" for our needs as "He watches over us."

We need to join with the Psalmist in praying, "LORD SAVE ME". God is always caring for us in whatever situation we may be grieving over, whether it is the loss of a loved one or our own illness or anxiety.  These have all caused me normal grief symptoms, but so too has job loss, and this took me a long time to recover from. Eventuaklly though, like the Psalmist, I was able to "REST IN THE LORD".

WHY WAS THE PSALMIST ABLE TO REST IN THE LORD?

"Return to my REST, my soul, for THE LORD HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME." Psalm 116:7 (NIV)

The Psalmist fully realized that God was his DELIVERER FROM GRIEF. REST depicts a place of "unthreatened security", like the nesting place of a bird, or as David tells us in Psalm 23, the quiet waters suitable for sheep.

"The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters." Psalm 23:1&2 (NIV)

Doctors tells us we need PHYSICAL REST, but the Bible encourages us to REST IN GOD. The Lord Jesus told His followers to come to Him with their burdens, for this was their way of finding ULTIMATE REST AND SECURITY.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

With this rest and security provided by God we can courageously face our difficulties. Joshua did this and was reminded that GOD'S PRESENCE WAS ALWAYS WITH HIM. The Psalmist too realized that "God was his source of deliverence" from his earlier threatened death. God had dried up  the tears in his eyes and "kept his feet from stumbling". He was indeed "resting" in the PRESENCE OF THE LORD.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

"For you Lord have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling."
                                                                                                Psalm 116:8 (NIV)

3. HE RESCUES US
" I WALKED BEFORE THE LORD in the land of the living; I KEPT MY FAITH, even when I said, "I am greatly afflicted." Psalm 116:9&10 (NIV)

Like the Psalmist, I would say that I am somewhat of "a specialist" when it comes to experiencing GRIEF, and learning how TO WALK WITH GOD and GROWING IN MY FAITH. My family members are in Heaven, and along with a number of health scares of my own, I have also had other "loss" experiences. I can't say they have been easy and the "healing" hasn't happened overnight; but my mother and father taught me that in their lowest times, "THEY WERE NEVER ALONE". When the negative emotions such as ANGER, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION have overwhelmed me, and like the Psalmist I've had "soul crushing burdens to bear", I know I HAVE NOT HAD TO BEAR THEM ALONE.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WALK BEFORE THE LORD AND TRUST IN HIM?

The word "WALK" means to "LIVE" . When we "WALK WITH GOD" we are living our lives with Him - obedient to His will.

Although severely afflicted,  the Psalmist could still ultimately TRUST IN THE LORD, because he experienced deliverance from his grief and salvation from sin. We too can find fulfillment no other way.

"You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance." Psalm 32:7 (NIV(

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came through Jesus Christ." Romans 3:23&24 (NIV)

"In response to his deliverance, he WALKED BEFORE THE LORD and lived a way that honoured God - OBEDIENCE, SURRENDER AND COMPLETE TRUST." Dr Tony Evans

WHAT SHALL I RENDER TO HIM? - Read Psalm 116:12-19

God has never failed to embrace me in my times of need. He has always been there, and in this second part of this Psalm - Verses 12-19 the Psalmist now tells us 3 things we need to do when we ask these questions:

* What shall we render the Lord?
* How can we return our thanks?
* How can we render our appreciation for all He has done for us?

1. WE SHALL PROCLAIM THE LORD'S BENEFITS.

"How can I repay the Lord for the good He has done for me? I will take the CUP OF SALVATION and CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD." Psalm 116:12&13 (CSB)

WHAT DOES "I SHALL LIFT UP MY CUP OF SALVATION"MEAN?

The word "CUP" means "ABUNDANCE", partically in the Old Testament. In Psalm 23, David speaks of his "cup running over" or "overflowing". Here the Psalmist expresses PRAISE TO GOD for his abundant deliverance from "grief and sorrow".

"As New Testament Christians we share our "CUP" with our Saviour - Jesus Christ. The 'CUP OF SALVATION' is like the wine we drink at Communion, our "thank offering" that has given us abundant life, when Jesus gave His life for us.

God has not only deliverance us from sickness, danger and difficulty, but with the "CUP OF SALVATION" we have "eternal life" and are delivered from the "grind of grief and sorrow"; for one day we will meet our family again in Heaven, and celebrate the New Jerusalem with Jesus and His Father God.

2. WE SHALL PAY OUR VOWS

"I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of His people" Psalm 116:14 (CSB)

This lament of grief and sorrow nakes a positive turn as the Psalmist MAKES A VOW (A PROMISE), a public announcement to commit himself before the Lord. Their VOWS,  both in the Old and New Testament, are serious and binding, and GOD NEVER FORGETS THEM!

"When you make a promise to God don't delay in following through......keep all your promises you make to Him." Ecclesiastes 5:4 (NIV)

"If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to keep it because He will require it of you, and it will be counted against you as a sin......Be careful to do whatever comes from your lips, because you have freely vowed what you have promised to the Lord your God."                                Deuteronomy 23:21&23 (CSB)

WHAT IS THE GREATEST VOW (PROMISE) YOU CAN MAKE TO THE LORD?

The greatest PROMISE you can make is to FOLLOW JESUS CHRIST and to BECOME HIS SERVANT. This is also the best PUBLIC DECLARATION you can make as a witness to others.

"O Lord, truly I am your servant , yes I am your servant, born into your household; you have freed from my chains." Psalm 116:16 (NLT)

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FREE FROM CHAINS?

One of the greatest hymns we know is "Amazing Grace". The modern version by Louie Giglio and Chris Tomlin has a chorus that goes like this:

"My chains are gone, I've been set free.
My God, my Saviour, has rescued me.
And like a flood, His mercy reigns,
                                      UNENDING LOVE, AMAZING GRACE!"

The Psalmis had an utter dependence on GOD'S GRACE and MERCY. Because he kept his vows and promises and was committed to serving the Lord, he found the highest JOY AND FREEDOM in following Him. He had his grief and sorrows, as we all do, that often kept him "bound in chains", but when we give our emotions to the Lord, and stand in His presence, "the chains are loosened" and WE ARE FREE.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST ENCOURAGEMENT IN THIS PSALM THAT WE CAN GIVE THOSE WHO HAVE LOST 'LOVED ONES'?

"The Lord cares deeply when His loved ones die." Psalm 116:15 (NLT)

This is the verse that has been most inspirational for me. Other Versions speaks of "LOVE ONES" as:

* "Precious and valuable in God's sight."
* "His faithful servants".
* "Ones that belong to God."

I believe we can truly lift others up with this knowledge. One of the blessings I have had in understanding my grief as Christ's servant, is that I can encourage others when they too are grieving:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the FATHER OF MERCIES and the GOD OF ALL COMFORT. He comforts us in all our afflictions, so that WE MAY BE ABLE TO COMFORT THOSE who are in any kind of affliction, through THE COMFORT WE OURSELVES RECEIVE FROM GOD." 2 Corinthians 1:3&4 (CSB)

"The Psalmist calls the death of a love one "precious and honourable in God's sight". No Christian passes through the workld into Heaven WITHOUT GOD NOTICING THEM. When they die, HE IS PRESENT AND HE CARES." Charles Swindoll

"The trumphant end of earthly life lived for God is a SPECIAL MOMENT." Dr Tony Evans

3. WE SHALL WORSHIP AND PRAISE THE LORD

"I will offer you a THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE, and call on the name of the Lord......in the presence of His people, in the courts of the Lord's house. HALLELUJAH."                                                                                                              Psalm 116:17 & 19 (NRSV)

"Worship must have both heart and head. It must engage emotions and thought. True worship comes from people who are deeply emotionally and who have STRONG EFFECTIONS FOR GOD. The Psalmist had tears, songs, a bowed head, lifted hands, confessions and longings - A FULL OBEDIENT, WORSHIPFUL LIFE." John Piper.

The Psalmist's journey from grief and sorrow to the HEIGHTS OF PRAISE didn't take place overnight. PRAISING GOD WAS THE PINNACLE OF HIS CLIMB. He didn't wait till he felt better before GIVING GOD HIS PRAISES.

Don't wait for your circumstances to changhe before you start PRAISING AND WORSHIPPING. Claim God's future promises NOW! Make PRAISE and THANKSGIVING a daily part of your prayers and make plans to join others in WORSHIP.

The Law of Moses outlined how God's people - the Israelites - were to approach their worship. They were to bring their "THANKSGIVING OFFERINGS" and "CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD". This is what the Psalmist would do in his public worship in the Temple, bringing glory ("Hallelujahs") to the Lord.

"Now this is the Law of the Fellowship Sacrifice that someone may present to the Lord: if He present it for THANKSGIVING, in addition to the THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE, he is to present unleavened cakes mixed with olive oil, unleavened wafers coated with oil, and well kneaded cakes of fine flour mixed with oil. He is to present as his offering cakes of leavened bread with his THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE OF FELLOWSHIP." Leviticus 7:11-13(CSB)

This Psalm a Hallelujah (Praise the Lord) exclamation! This is what God's people are to do everywhere.

"The FUEL OF WORSHIP and the truth of God is REVERENCE, GRATITUDE AND JOY. But we still need to LIGHT THE FIRE to produce the HEART OF WORSHIP - we need the Holy Spirit to ignite us." John Piper

PSALM 115 - TRUST IN THE LORD

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 115

This is the third of the Hallelu Psalms, which we know to be sung at the Jewish Passover. Again, we remember how Jesus would have sung this Psalm at the end of His Passover Meal with His disciples, on the night of His betrayal. It is also possible that this Psalm in particular was also sung at the time of Ezra, when the Jews were dedicating their new Temple, after returning to Jerusalem from exile.

It was a Lithurgi Psalm , sung by a group of PRIESTS AND WORSHIPPERS - "a single voice leading with the congegraton joining in response". We also know there was a lot of Hebrew REPITITION:

* "Not to us, Lord, not to us"....
* "Trust in the Lord, He is your help and shield."
* "He will bless....."
* "Praise the Lord.....Praise the Lord."

Why? Because these were important statements and promises - not only for the Israelites, but for the Priests to remember, and also the Gentiles - "all those who would fear the Lord" - and of course for us today and our children!!

A GOD OF MERCY, GRACE & TRUTH                            Read Psalm 115:1; Exodus 12 - 15

"Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us. But TO YOUR NAME GIVE GLORY." Psalm 115:1a

"This is a Godly man's motto." John TRAPP

Lord, it is not what we can do, but we can do it in YOUR POWER and IN YOUR WILL. We want to serve You, but we can only do it in YOUR STRENGTH AND WISDOM. We are only "participators" in God's work. THE GLORY ALL GOES TO GOD AND HIS NAME!

Back to the first Passover in Egypt, the Israelites were given lots of instructions from God, which THEY FOLLOWED:

* About what they should eat: roasted lamb and unleavened bread.
* Putting the blood of the lamb on the doorposts.
* Dressing for their departure: tucking their cloak in the belt and sandals on their feet.

The Israelites "bowed down and worshipped God" for although they had obeyed His instructions, they knew that it was God, not man, that would save them.

"Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendents. When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as He promised,  observe this ceremony. And when your children ask you: "What does this ceremony mean to you?", then tell them, "It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when He struck down the Egypotians." Then the people bowed down and worshipped." Exodus 12:24-28 (NIV)

After they had been led out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and had watched the destruction of their Egyptian enemies, Moses and Miriam led God's people in a famous song to the Lord.

"Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you - MAJESTIC IN HOLINESS, AWESOME IN GLORY, WORKING WONDERS? ......In your UNFAILING LOVE you will lead your people you have redeemed, IN YOUR STRENGTH, you will guide them to your holy dwelling."                                                                                                                        Exodus 15:11-13 (NIV)

Why do we glorify the Lord? Because of His MERCY, GRACE AND TRUTH. Because of HIS LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS. In the 1st Chapter of John we are reminded of this when we meet with Jesus, who came to earth, the Son of God, "full of grace and truth".

"The Word became flesh and made His dwelling place among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."John 1:14 (NIV)

COMPARING OUR SOVEREIGN GOD WITH HEATHEN IDOLS - Read Psalm 115:2-8; Ezra 6:13-22

When the Jews came back to Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon, they rebuilt the Temple and they celebrated the Passover.

"The Temple was completed on the third day of the month of Adar, in the 6th yearof the reign of King Darius. Then the people of Israel - the Priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles - celebrated the dedication of the House of God with joy." Ezra 6:15-16 (NIV)

"On the 14th day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the Passover.....The Israelites who had returned from exile ate it with all who had seperated themselves from  the unclean practices of their Gentile neighbours in order to seek the Lord, the God of Israel."  Ezra 6:19 & 21 (NIV)

Most of the Israelites were cured of their idolatry, and even some of the Gentiles met with them in worship at the Temple.  But there were still people living in the land who worshipped idols and mocked them,  telling them they had no reason to worship their God.

"Why should the Gentiles say: "So where is their God?" Our God is in Heaven, He does whatever He pleases." Psalm 115:2&3

A beautiful contrast is made between ISRAEL'S (OUR) LIVING GOD and the HEATHEN IDOLS.

ISRAEL'S (OUR) LIVING GOD:

  • God made everything.
  • "God is in Heaven" - Living and Sovereign.
  • He sees their distress and answers their needs.
  • He "does whatever He wishes".
  • He hears their prayers and comes to their assistance.
  • God offers salvation and eternal life through His Son Jesus.

GENTILE HEATHEN IDOLS

  • They are made by human hands.
  • They are on earth and "hard" and "worthless".
  • "They have eyes but cannot see" - they are blind.
  • "They have ears but can hear", hands and feet but cannot move. They are deaf and motionless.
  • Idols are "hard" and "unfeeling" - they never have life, and don't offer life to anyone, "for those who make them will be like them".
"Those who make them will be like them, so will all who trust in them." Psalm 115:8 (NKJV)

Today we still worship idols for security and well being. But they bring us down,  rather than CLOSER TO GOD. We spend "worthless time" in their pursuit, rather than IN THE PRESENCE OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER - praying, reading His Word, doing His service and worshipping Him.

We too become what we WORSHIP, We need to make "ourselves into God's image", taking great care that JESUS CHRIST is the CENTRE of OUR WORSHIP.

"Therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, in view of GOD'S MERCY, to offer your bodies, as a LIVING SACRIFICE, holy and pleasing to God - this is YOUR TRUE AND PROPER WORSHIP."                                                                                                                     Romans 12:1 (NIV)

"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiriutual fervor, SERVING THE LORD."                                                                                                                         Romans 12:11 (NIV)

TRUST IN THE LORD: OUR HELP AND SHIELD -                      Read Psalm 115:9-11

This is the first repetitive part of the Psalm, and more than likely the Leader in the Temple is calling the people - the Israelites, Priests and Gentile believers - to "TRUST IN THE LORD, FOR HE IS OUR HELP AND SHIELD".

"We put our HOPE IN THE LORD.  HE IS OUR HELP AND SHIELD." Psalm 33:20 (NLT)

So who were these three different groupos of people:

1. THE ISRAELITES (JEWS)

We know them as GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE - first of all when God tells Abraham in Genesis 17, that He will make him a father of a great nation, and He made His covenant with Him.

"When Abram was 99years old, the Lord appeared to Him and said: "I am the God Almighty; walk before Me faithfully and be blameless." Abram fell facedown, and God said to him: "As for Me, this is my covenant with you: You willl be the father of many nations. You will no longer be called Abrah, your name will be Abraham. I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations lof you, amd kings will come from you.I will establish an everlasting covenant between me and your descendents after you, for generations to come, to be their God. The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and you descendents after you; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD." Genesis 17:1, 3-8 (NIV)

In the New Testamentm, Jesus reminds Simon Peter and His disciples that they too are GOD'S "CHOSEN". Simon Peter told Jesus that he would always follow after Him, because HE WAS THE "HOLY ONE OF GOD".

"Simon Peter answered Him: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of ETERNAL LIFE. We have come to BELIEVE that you are the HOLY ONE OF GOD." Then Jesus replied, "Have I not CHOSEN YOU, the twelve?" Joihn 6:68-70 (NIV)

2. PRIESTS

The Priests were of the Family of Aaron, descendents of Aaron. They, like our Priests, Ministers and Pastors, were all SERVANTS OF THE LORD, whose job it was to "witness", preach and teach God's Word to the People of God.,

"Ministers must be patterns to others, depending on God, living in the faith." John Trapp

3.  GENTILE BELIEVERS

These were the Non-Jewish people who still "feared the Lord" and still desired to be a "child of God". In the Old Testament they are mentioned as those who "respected and feared the Lord, but were not of the Jewish faith.". In the New Testament we hear of Gentile believers in the Early Church.

"As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name - for they will hear of your great Name and mighty hand and your outstretched arm - WHEN THEY COME AND PRAY TOWARDS THIS TEMPLE."
1 Kings 8:41&42 (NIV)

"In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a Captain of the Italian Regimant. HE WAS A DEVOUT, GOD FEARING MAN, as was everyone in His household. He gave generously to the poor and PRAYED REGULARLY." Acts 10:1&2 (NLT)

"Brothers - you Sons of Abraham and also you GOD-FEARING GENTILES - this message of salvation has been sent to us." Acts 13:26 (NLT)

We too today, as children of God and followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, are just like the Gentiles in the early Church. We too need to TRUST IN THE LORD, because of who HE IS and what HE HAS DONE FOR US, in the past and what we  know HE WILL DO in the future - FOR HE IS OUR HOPE AND SHIELD.

"I pray that God the source of our HOPE,  will fill you completely with joy and HOPE and peace, because YOU TRUST IN HIM. Then you will overflow with CONFIDENT HOPE through the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13 (NLT)

THE LORD WILL BLESS US - Read Psalm 115:12-15;                Genesis 12:1-3; Matthew 5:3-12

Israel knew that God had remembered them in the past and they would be BLESSED in the future. So did the Priests - Aaron's descendents; and finally, the Gentiles who feared the Lord also knew they would be BLESSED, because they had come to TRUST IN THE LORD.

"It is in HIS NATURE TO BLESS, it is HIS PREROGATIVE TO BLESS; HE PROMISES TO BLESS, and therefore, be sure: HE WILL BLESS, and BLESS and BLESS." Charles Spurgeon

"May the Lord cause you to flourish, both you and your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and earth." Psalm 1:14&15

What kind of blessings does the Lord give us?

1. CHILDREN AND FAMILY

Most of all in the Bible we read how God blessed people with children and great families. In Genesis 12:1-3, we read how Abraham was blessed by God with a promise that he would have a family. In fact, he would be the father of a great nation, and "all people on the earth would be blessed through him."

"I will make you into a great nation. I WILL BLESS YOU and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others......All the families on the earth will be blessed through you." Genesis 12:2&3

2. SUCCESS FOR THE FUTURE

As Abraham was promised, we too are promised that we will have a BLESSING WITH SUCCESS in our lives. It may not be what we desire, but we will have WHAT WE NEED. The Hebrew word, "esher" which is again, often used in Psalms is translated as "HAPPINESS". GOD'S CHASTISEMENT IS ALSO A BLESSING, though we may not see it, for it is a DISPLAY OF GOD'S LOVE.

"They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplined us for our good, in order that we may share in His holiness." Hebrews 12:10 (NIV)

In the New Testament, spoecifically in the Beautitudes,  we find the Greek word, "makiarios", is used for the word "happiness", that we can usually find when "when follow God's will in our lives" and endeavouring to live as Jesus would want us too.

"God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for Him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.....God blesses those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.....God blesses those who are pure, for they will see God......God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs." Matthew 5:3,6,8-10 (NLT)

3. FORGIVENESS

In the Psalms and the New Testament we also read a lot about those who are BLESSED BY FORGIVENESS (the Greek word "eulego"). The forgiveness (mercy and grace) of God, Jesus Christ through His death on the cross, and even our forgiveness of others.

"BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE TRANSGRESSIONS ARE FORGIVEN, whose sins are covered."   Psalm 32:1 (NIV)

"GOD BLESSES THOSE WHO ARE MERCIFUL, for they will be shown mercy."
                                                                                                 Matthew 5:7 (NLT)

In all these blessings: PRAISE, HAPPINESS (JOY), CHASTISEMENT and FORGIVENESS, we can have confidence, for God is our Father of all LOVE, MERCY and GRACE, TRUTH and FAITHFULNESS.

"But blessed is are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence."                                                                                                            Jeremiah 17:7 (NIV)

CONCLUSION: PRAISE THE LORD -                                   Read Psalm 115:16-18;   Genesis 1:26-30

"This Psalm has come full circle back to God and to His people." Pat and David Alexander

The Heavens are the Lords. He is the Sovereign Creator of both the heavens and the earth. In         Genesis 1:26-30, we are reminded that even though God is Sovereign, He gave "man dominion over the earth". What does this mean?

* We need to care for it.
* We need to us its resources for the good of humanity.

"Remember that behind the gift, IS THE GIVER." John Trapp

The "GIVER" created us in His image, to be like Him, and as GOD, we know HE CARES FOR THE WORLD, and as the people HE MADE, HE EXPECTS THE SAME OF US.

"Then God looked over all He had made, and He saw that it was very good. And evening passed, and morning, the sixth day." Genesis 1:31 (NLT)

The Psalmist knew that not only God, but His Son Jesus were worthy of OUR PRAISE, became He came to conquer sin and death. And we who have accepted Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, and can now live eternally, CAN "PRAISE HIM FOREVER AND EVER.""

"The GRACE OF OUR LORD was poured out on me abundantly, along with the FAITH AND LOVE OF JESUS CHRIST. Christ Jesus came into the world to SAVE SINNERS.....I WAS SHOWN MERCY so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His immense patience and an example for those who would BELIEVE IN HIM and RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE."                                                                                                                  1 Timothy 1:14-16

"But we will PRAISE THE LORD, forever and ever. PRAISE THE LORD!" Psalm 115:18

PSALM 114 - THE ISRAELITES DELIVERANCE

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 114

Psalm 114 is the second in a series of "Egyptian Hallel" Psalms, seven, as we know, are part of the Jewish Passover Festival. This was Israel's "central act of redemption" under the OLD COVENANT. The Israelites remembered how God rescued them when they were slaves in Egypt, and He made them HIS OWN PEOPLE.

"Then Moses and the Israelites sand this song to the Lord: "I will sing to to the Lord for He is highly exalted. Both horse and rider He has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my defense, He has become my salvation. He is my God and I will praise Him. My father's God and I will exalt Him." Exodus 15:1&2 (NIV)

We remember how Jesus sang these songs at the Last Supper with His disciples and under the NEW COVENANT at His death and resurrection - "our central act of redemption", we have been called to remember and to celebrate how Jesus has SET US FREE.

"For I received from the Lord what I first passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said: "This is my body which is for youy; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same way, after supper, He took the cup saying, "This cup is the New Covenant in my blood; do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes."
                                                                                                 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NIV)

"This SONG OF CLIMAX is ONE AND INDIVISABLE. True poetry has reached it's climax, no human mind has been able to equal it; much less excel, the grandeur of this Psalm."                                                                                                                          Charles Spurgeon

GOD BROUGHT ISRAEL OUT OF EGYPT -                         Read Psalm 114:1&2

"When Israel went forth from Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of a foreign language. Judah became God's sanctuary and Israel,  His dominion." Psalm 114:1&2 (NASB)

The Israelites had been in a foreign country for over 400 years. It was never really their home for they "spoke a different language". They were also treated cruelly, like slaves - often beaten because they didn't understand their orders. The emphasis in this passage is that "Israel did not belong in Egypt."

But we know it was God's plan to set them free - to deliver them from these cruel people. The "language of the world" is often difficult for Christians - God's children "who are compelled to hear it in their everyday lives." It is a blessing when we can fellowship with other Christians.

"The leading TRIBE OF JUDAH represented the whole nation that became God's dwelling place - HIS SANCTUARY. These godly people in His Tabernacle represented GOD'S PRESENCE."
                                                                                                           David Guzik

When they were seperated as a "Tribe of Priests", their motto was: "HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD". Judah was the Lord's "holy people" set apart for His special use. Now, they led the way in the wilderness, SPIRITUALLY and as a ROYAL TRIBE. The nation of Israel were also under GOD'S DOMINION - HE WAS THEIR KING! He wanted them to honour Him as their "Lord and Master - Adonai", not merely their helper or mascot.

"The people were a SHRINE OF DEITY, their camp was ONE GREAT TEMPLE."                                                                                                                                  Charles Spurgeon

When the Lord is present in our Church and in our lives, we need to "accept him as we rule obediently", It is an "honourable priviledge" to be a CHILD OF GOD - ONE OF HIS PEOPLE.

THE PARTING OF SEAS AND THE SKIPPING OF MOUNTAINS - Read Psalm 114:3-6; Exodus 14, 16:19-20;             Joshua 3&4

As in other places of Poetry, the Psalmist describes nature as responding to God in "fear and reverance". In Psalm 114:3 he mentions the PARTING OF THE RED SEA AND THE JORDAN RIVER as the BEGINNING AND END of ISRAEL'S JOURNEY TO THE PROMISED LAND.

"The Red Sea looked and ran away; the Jordan River turned back." Psalm 114:3 (NCV)

"When the waters divided they simply responded to the AWESOME PRESENCE OF GOD - a BEAUTIFUL POWERFUL PICTURE." David Guzik

"The poet does not sing of natural laws......but to Him the PRESENCE OF GOD with His people is EVERYTHING. In his lofty song he tells how the river was driven back because THE LORD WAS THERE." Charles Spurgeon

In Exodus 14 we read how the people crossed the Red Se with "a wall of water on the right and another on the left". This was the DAY OF DELIVERANCE FOR THE ISRAELITES. Then again in Joshua 3, we read how the Jordan River parted to let the Israelites pass over into the Promised Land.

"The Lord did this so all the people would know that HE HAS GREAT POWER and so you would always RESPECT THE LORD YOUR GOD." Joshua 4:24 (NCV)

In Psalm 114:4 we read how the mountains and hills "skip like rams and lambs" with strength and joy. They "spring in God's presence" and "tremble in fear and adoration". This probably has something to do with the manifestation of earthquakes, again in GOD'S PRESENCE. Their "skipping" may also be becaus they are HAPPY with the LORD'S DELIVERANCE AND SALVATION.

"On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. The Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, as they stood at the foot of the mountain. Mt Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and the voice of God answered him." Exodus 16:16-19  (NIV)

"Nature recognized His presence and obeyed His will. The sea fled. Jordan was driven back, mountains and hills were moved." G.Campbell Morgan

"God knows we know the answers to the Psalmist's questions and He wants us tio TREMBLE at HIS GREATNESS, when we are assured of HIS PRESENCE IN CREATION." David Guzik

The God of Jacob is exalted as having dominion over RIVERS, SEAS, MOUNTAINS, HILLS and all creation. God has come nearer to us when he assumed the NATURE OF JESUS CHRIST. As we repent of our sins, we receive forgiveness and ACCEPT JESUS AS OUR SAVIOUR. We feel the MIGHTY AWE of BOTH THE FATHER AND THE SON IN OUR MIDST.

WATER FROM THE ROCK - Read Psalm 114:7&8; Exodus 17

"Tremble earth at the PRESENCE OF THE LORD and at the PRESENCE OF THE GOD OF JACOB." Psalm 114:7 (NLT)

"Let the believer feel that God is near and we will serve the Lord will fear, joy and trembling. The Lord is most reverend when HE IS MOST LOVED." Charles Spurgeon

Not only do the seas, rivers, mountains and hills respect HIS OMNIPOTENCE AND OMNIPRESENCE, but now God give His people water from the rocks to show HIS LOVE AND COMPASSION.

"The Lord answered Moses: "Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there beside at the rock at Horeb.  Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink."
So Moses did this in sight of the elders of Israel. And he called this place Masseh and Meribah because the Israelites quarrelled and because they tested the Lord saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?" Exodus 17:5-7

The Israelites not only complained in the wilderness about being hungry, now they were thirsty. Yet again, God was compassionate and caring, meeting their needs. The believer feels GOD IS NEAR not only because "MOUNTAINS MOVE", but "ROCKS YIELD WATER".

"He turns the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water." Psalm 118:8

CONCLUSION - GOD MEETS OUR PERSONAL NEEDS

Psalm 114 ends, as Psalm 113 does, with a declaration of GOD'S LOVE, COMPASSION AND PROVISION. He CARES FOR OUR PERSONAL NEEDS! When we are thirsty, down, attacked and tempted - GOD CARES!

We need to remember that with Israel's deliverance came A VICTORY and we too have A VICTORY OVER SIN AND DEATH, IN JESUS CHRIST!

"But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to hold Him." Acts 2:24 (NIV)

"But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ, even when we dead in transgression... IT IS BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED."                                                                                                      Ephesians 2:4&5 (NIV)

We can therefore join with the Israelites and the Psalmist with their "Hallelu Psaises". We too have been led out of bondage and guided to the PROMISED LAND, when one day we will have "Heavenly manna" and "water from the rock."

                                              PRAISE THE LORD!
