PSALM 119 - THE WORD OF GOD

 INTRODUCTION- Read Psalm 119

Do you wake up in the morning with a desire to read your Bible? I DO! Does memorizing Scripture excite you? I TRY VERY HARD! But I realize this is not the case for everyone. Praying and reading the Bible may not seem to best use of your time. BUT IT IS!

As we draw closer to God and His Word, our hearts and lives begin to change for the better. The more we understand His Word, the more eager we are to LOVE HIM, and then we want to READ HIS WORD even more.

As we PRAY OVER IT, READ AND STUDY IT and MEMORIZE IT, it will "saturate" or thinking and help us to solve problems that may exist in our life. We need to filter our decision making through the Word, and don't let a day go by without spending time in it.

"Oh, how I love your Law. I meditate on it day and night." Psalm 119:97 (NIV)

Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm. In fact, it is the longest chapter in all the Bible. There are 22 sections, each with 8 verses, beginning with a "successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet." Although we don't who is the Author of this Psalm, I agree with many commentators that it is likely to be David. Why? The more I read it, the more I can see him in it:

* His desire to follow the Lord in good times and bad.
* His desire to follow God's Will in his life.
* His desire to live a righteous and pure life.
* His GREAT LOVE FOR GOD'S WORD.

The one theme of Psalm 119 is the WORD OF GOD. Made up of the writer's PRAYERS, PRAISES AND PROTESTS (facts and opinions), it shows us that he was a godly man with a sincere faith. We see how David applied himself to PRAYER AND MEDITATION, when endeavouring to UNDERSTAND GOD'S WORD. The WORD OF GOD governed his lifestyle and conduct, giving him hope and peace.

We too can be challenged in our OBEDIANCE, LOVE and JOY of God's Word. We can live a truly blessed and pure life,  "deeply rooted in reverence" to the WORD - "the written TRUTH". It provides "nutrition for us" as we a GROW AND MATURE spiritually,  as Christians. With the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the WORD OF GOD can transform our lives.

"Let the message of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, with songs, hymns and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts."
                                                                                          Colossians 3:16 (NIV)

Matthew Henry, the great 18th century Bible commentator was introduced to Psalm 119 by his father. Philip Henry, at an early age. He told his son to read one verse every morning. He said it would develop on him, "a love for the rest of the Scriptures."

"There is no Psalm like 119. It is like none of the rest.  It excells them all and shines brightly in the constellation"  Matthew Henry

"Other Psalms have been mere lakes, but Psalm 119 is the main ocean. It contains sacred thoughts, every inch of which is a fertile garden of the Lord." Charles Spurgeon

GOD'S WORD - IT'S OTHER NAMES

1. GOD'S LAW, COMMANDMENTS AND DECREES

These are found in over 50 verses, talking about "God sovereign revelation" and omnipotence. It gives authority to GOD'S ORDERS and establishes an edict for JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS.

"Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the LAW."
                                                                                  Psalm 119: 1 (NKJV)

"I will study YOUR COMMANDMENTS and reflect on your ways. I delight in YOUR DECREES; I will not neglect Your Word."  Psalm 119:15&16 (NKJV)

2. PRECEPTS AND STATUES

These are instructions, usually spoken of by leadership - particularly from THE LORD. 42 verses both these names, engraved and inscribed. They are the FAITHFUL, ETERNAL and FIXED TRUTH.

"You have laid down PRECEPTS which are to be fully obeyed. May my way be firm in the observance of YOUR STATUES." Psalm 119:4&5 (NKJV)

3. TESTIMONIES AND INSTRUCTIONS

23 verses witness loyalty to God's covenant, "solemnly decared to the world."

"Blessed are those who keep His testimonies and seek Him with their whole heart."                                                                                                                   Psalm 119:2 (NKJV)

4. THE WORD AND PROMISES

GOD'S SPOKEN WORD is mentioned 24 times, as a written declaration. Anything that God has expressed is FAITHFUL AND TRUE.

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By OBEYING YOUR WORD." Psalm 119:9 (NKJV)

"Sustain me, my God, according to YOUR PROMISES, and I will live; do not let your hopes dashed."  Psalm 119:116 (NIV)

5. WAYS AND PATHS - JUDGEMENTS

God promises his providence - walking in the ways of justice and righteousness. Discerning of knowledge and wisdom, to regulate the order of GOD'S WAYS AND WORKS.

"They do not compromise with evil, they do no wrong, but FOLLOW HIS WAY and walk only in HIS PATHS." Psalm 119:4 (NIV/NLT)
"I will praise you with a sincere heart and I study your righteous judgements." Psalm 119:7 (NIV)

ALEPH/PE: OBEDIENCE TO GOD'S WORD - Read Psalm 119:1-8, 129-136

"Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the LAW OF THE LORD. Blessed are those who KEEP HIS STATUES and seek Him with all their heaert."                                                                                                                     Psalm 119:1&2 (NIV)

The word "KEEP" means "DOING" not only HEARING THE WORD. We must diligently STUDY GOD'S WORD and KEEP HIS PRECEPTS, obedient to His Word. The "whole heart" is vital and we will "know the Lord" when we seek Him wholeheartedly.

"Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says!" James 1:22 (NLT)

"I have tried hard to find You, don't let me WANDER FROM YOUR COMMANDS. I have HIDDEN YOUR WORD IN MY HEART that I may not sin against you." Psalm 119:10&11 (NLT)

In these verses the Psalmist declares his dedication to God, but also his weakness; admitting that he had times of disobedience when he would "wander" from God's commandments. This sounds like David. We can be assured that before he "hid the word in his heart", he received it in his mind. The greatest benefit of knowing and obeying God's Word was his developing relationship with his Father God.

"His heart had gone after God Himself. He had not only desired to OBEY HIS LAWS, but to COMMUNE WITH HIS PERSON." Charles Spurgeon

MAY THE MIND OF CHRIST MY SAVIOUR

May the mind of Christ my Saviour
Live in me from day to day.
By Hos love and power controlling
                                          ALL I SAY AND DO!

May the WORD OF GOD dwell richly
In my heart from hour to hour.
So that all may see I triumph
                                         ONLY THROUGH HIS POWER!
                                                    Kate Wilkinson (1925)

Kate Wilkinson, the composer of this hymn combines two passions in her life: her ministry to girls and her love for God's Word. (Keswick Deeper Life Movement). She believed a Christian's growth resulted from OBEYING GOD'S WORD. Like David, she wanted to be renewed in MIND AND SPIRIT, by GOD'S WORD. They both knew this would not come easily, but for the moment it took COMMITTMENT.

"I will study Your commandments and reflect on your ways. I will delight in Your decrees and not forget Your Word." Psalm 119:15&16 (NLT)

"Your LAWS are wonderfu. No wonder I OBEY THEM." Psalm 119:129 (NLT)

David again "declares his wonder" of GOD'S WORD. His "abiding delight" in His Word prompted a greater OBEDIENCE. There was more than "outer actions", but the "inner obedience of the soul." He wanted God  "direct his feelings and lusts", so he would not be overcome by evil and sin. Unchecked, sin can have dominion over our live s and we don't want to live in bondage to it. If we allow ourselves to be directed by the WORD OF GOD we will be FREE from sins dominion and bondage.

"Make my steps firm in the WORD.....Brethren, we can overcome sin in the power of the Lord. Sin is strong but GRACE IS STRONGER. Satan is wise but GOD IS WISER. The Lord is on OUR SIDE!"
                                                                                                         Charles Spurgeon

BETH: LIVING A PURE LIFE THROUGH GOD'S WORD        Read Psalm 119:9-16; Romans 6.

"How can a young man keeps his mind PURE? By living according to YOUR WORD."
                                                                                                         Psalm 119:9

This is a question many Christians have asked themselves - men and women. God's answer is: "if you are going to live with me" you are not to live with the world. You must begin at the earliest possible age - as a YOUNG PERSON. Even though we may have the desire for "moral purity", there are still many temptations when you are young:

*Youthful energy that leads to CARELESSNESS.
* Lack of wisdom that leads to BAD CHOICES.
* The desire to GAIN INDEPENDENCE.
* Physical and sexual IMMORALITY.
* MONEY and the freedom it brings.
* The desire to be ACCEPTED BY PEERS.

From the heartfelt prayers in this Psalm, we can see that this "young man" is probably David, for he was indeed "a man of prayer" who desired a righteous life, and a personal relationship with God. The foundation for a morally pure life is found in GOD'S WORD. It shows us how to be righteous and wise, and to make changes in our life. Conduct yourself in a HOLY AND PURE WAY, so that you can be a witness to others, as David was.

"PURIFY YOURSELVES for tomorrow the Lord will do great wonders among you."                                                                                                                     Joshua1:5 (NLT)

"GOD'S WORD is wholly sufficient for GODLY LIVING. By grasping its powerful message we can be PURE." Max Lucado

Psalm 119 is a complete expression of GOD'S TRUTH AND VALUES. Why is SOUND DOCTRINE necessary for HOLY and PURE living? It relates to our CONSCIOUSNESS, CONVICTIONS AND CONSCIENCE. Agai, these can only be PURE, when we read and obey GOD'S WORD.

CONSCIOUSNESS

CONSCIOUSNESS involves KNOWLEDGE, something we need before we can FOLLOW GOD'S WILL and COMMANDS. When we read GOD'S WORD (LAW) we gain a consciousness of sin, which leads to an acceptance and understanding of RIGHTEOUSNESS.

"But thanks be to God. Though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to OBEY FROM YOUR HEART, the pattern of TEACHINGS that has claimed your allegiance. You have been SET FREE FROM SIN and our now SLAVES TO RIGHTEOUSNESS." Romans 6:17&18 (NCV)

God's Word teaches us sound doctrine and sharpens these by GODLY CONSCIOUNESS. Now we can move beyond our CONSCIOUSNESS TO CONVICTION.

CONVICTION

"It is one thing to be AWARE that a certain action is right; it's another to have CONVICTION about it." R.C Sproul

A CONVICTION is the setting of God's will and laws in our hearts. It goes beyond our brain and penetrates our CONSCIENCE.

"I am using an example from everyday life, becaiuse of our human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves to impurities and ever increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to RIGHTEOUSNESS.  RIGHTEOUSNESS LEADS TO HOLINESS."Romans 6:19 (NCV)

CONSCIENCE

Our CONSCIENCE is an inner voice that "governs our behaviours", making excuses or excusing us. It monitors our good and bad behaviours. For our CONSCIENCE to function in a GODLY WAY, it needs  to be influenced by GODLY CONVICTIONS, which we find in GOD'S WORD.

"CONSCIENCES must not be trusted without the light of the WORD OF GOD." Charles Bridges

We must pray: "Teach me good judgement and knowledge". Again, this is something we often forget and are too ready to "trust our own hearts."

"I believe in Your commands, now teach me GOOD JUDGEMENT AND KNOWLEDGE."
                                                                                                          Psalm 119:66

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is TRUE and makes us realize what is wrong in our lives. It CORRECTS US WHEN WE ARE WRONG and TEACHES US TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT." 2 Timothy 3:16  (NCV)

GIMEL/TSADE: GOD'S WORD IS TRUTH -                        Read Psalm 119:7-14, 137-144

"Open my eyes to see the wonderful truth in your instructioins." Psalm 118:18 (NLT)

THE TRUTH - GOD'S WORD gives us a "different perspective." You are the Lord's  "personal project". He wants us to grow into mature Christians, for "we are the tools in His hand." David knew that GOD WAS JUST AND FAITHFUL. His word is displayed in His character. It is indeed true!

"Your justice in eternal and your INSTRUCTIONS ARE PERFECTLY TRUE."                                                                                                                     Psalm 119:142 (NLT)

"TRUST IN THE RELIABILITY OF GOD'S WORD is directly in proportion to ONES TRUST IN THE LORD HIMSELF." David Guzik

It is common today for people to believe that there is NO "REAL  TRUTH" in the WORD OF GOD.
The Biblical Message is "fundamentally true"- it depends on how we receive and allow it to work in our lives. David declared the WORD OF GOD TO BE THE TRUTH; not only TRUE, BUT ETERNALLY TRUE.

"Your righteousness is everything and YOUR LAW IS TRUE." Psalm 119:42 (NLT)

"Yet, you are near Lord and ALL YOUR COMMANDS ARE TRUE." Psalm 119:151 (NLT)

DALETH/SAMEH: HOPE, TRUST AND FAITH IN GOD'S WORD - Read 119:25-32, 113-120

"I have chosen the way of FAITHFULNESS. I have set my heart on Your laws."                                                                                                                          Psalm 119:30 (NIV)

David chose the "way of faithfulness" (truth) and was in a close relationship with God. Trusting in "God's Voice" goes above "any reproach and disapproving voices" from the world. We believe in Jesus and all He has done for us. The "WORD OF TRUTH" was in David's mouth. He had "HOPED IN GOD'S WORD" in the past and had not been disappointed. He not only believed God's promised, he received them WITH FAITH.

This should be a "life experience" for every Christian. We are oibligated to our Father God as the One who gives us life. We need to trust an respect Him as our OMNIPOTENT, OMNIPRESENT AND OMNISCIENT GOD. He is our "designer" and knows what is best for us.

"Don't let your hearts be troubled, TRUST IN GOD, TRUST ALSO IN ME." John14:1 (NLT)

"Never take the WORD OF TRUTH from my mouth; for I HAVE PUT MY HOPE IN YOUR LAWS."Psalm 119:43 (NIV)

"No trouble will pull us from our LOVE OF THE TRUTH. You may pull the tongue out of my head, but not the FAITH OUT OF MY HEART." John Trapp (a quote from a Christian martyr.

"It may be uncomfortable to see the unresolved pain in the book of Job; but it brings us right to the HEART OF HOPE - even in pain and despair, HOPE FLOURISHES." Benjamin Windle

Nothing would take away DAVID'S FAITH or make him FORSAKE THE WORD OF GOD. He would cling to it in "good times and bad". He had known God as "A REFUGE" in troubled times, and a "HIDING PLACE" where his HOPE WAS SET. We too can know God's protection. He indeed will KEEP US SAFE.

"A good HIDING PLACE gives us STRENGTH, HEIGHT CONCEALMENT AND RELIABILITY." David Guzik

"You are my refuge and shield. I HAVE PUT MY HOPE IN YOUR WORD." Psalm 119:114

HE/TETH/AYIN: LOVE FOR GOD'S WORD - BEYOND RICHES - Read Psalm 119:33-40, 65-72, 121-128, Numbers 22; Acts 5

"The LAW OF YOUR MOUTH is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver."
                                                                                                                Psalm 119:72 (NIV)

"Because I LOVE YOUR COMMANDS MORE THAN GOLD, more than pure gold."
                                                                                       Psalm 119:127 (NIV)

David LOVED THE WORD OF GOD and he knew that he needed to follow God's Will, and to walk in His Path, rather than his own selfish one. We too need God's empowering. When God is working in us, we can have the power to please Him.

"Turn my eyes from worthless things (covetousness). Give me life through YOUR WORD. Give me eagerness for YOUR LAW, rather than a LOVE FOR MONEY (selfish gain)."
Psalm 119:36&37 (NLT/NIV)

David knew that COVETOUSNESS (GREED) was a threat to walking in GOD'S WAY. The Bible tells us that greed (covetousness) can ruin people.  The story of Balaam and the Donkey, in Numbers 22, tells us how Balaam's greed led him to disobey God.  In Acts 5, we read the story of Ananias and Sapphira. They "lied to the Holy Spirit", and gave only half the "sales of their property" to the disciples to share with people in need.

"They commit adultery with their eyes and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin and they were all trained in GREED. They live under God's curse. They have wandered off the right road and followed Balaam, who loved to earn money by doing wrong."                                                                                                           2 Peter 2:14&15 (NLT)

"The next morning Balaam got up, saddled his donkey and started off with the Moabite officials. But God was angry that Balaam was going with them, so he sent an angel of the Lord to block his way......Then Balaam confessed to the angel of the Lord, "I have sinned. I didn't rea;ize you were standing on the road to block my way. I will return home if you are against my going."                                                                                                 Numbers 22:21, 22 & 34 (NLT)

"Then Peter said: "Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit and kept half the money for yourself. The property was yours to sell as you wished; and after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying to us, but God." Acts 5:3&4

David also knew that some things were "worthless". They are of no value in eternity and little value in our present age. Many lives are wasted because they are unable to "turn away from worthless things".
They be thought of to be worth, but really, they:

* Do NO GOOD and do NOT LAST.
* Are of  NO HELP TO OTHERS.
* Don't build up our HOPE, FAITH and LOVE.
* They distract us FROM GOD and our SERVICE for CHRIST JESUS.

"For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, craving money, have WANDERED FROM THE TRUE FAITH and pierced themselves." 1 Timothy 6:10 (NLT)

WAW/ KAPH/ LAMEDH: TRIALS AND AFFLICTION - OUR COMFORT AND STRENGTH IN GOD'S WORD -                   Read Psalm 119:41-48, 73-9

GOD'S WORD has helped us see through our SURFACE PROBLEMS. Regular "interaction with Scripture" may not "transform your environment"but YOU WILL BE CHANGED. GOD'S WORD IS FOR YOU! There is no situation you cannot face if you spend time in GOD'S WORD.

"It is good for me that I WAS AFFLICTED, that I may LEARN YOUR STATUES.
                                                                             Psalm 119:71 (NASB)

"If YOUR LAW had not been MY DELIGHT, then I would have PERISHED IN AFFLICTION."
                                                                               Psalm 119:92 (NASB)

David prayed and prayed because he was experiencing GREAT TRIAL AND TRIBULATION. He had known:

* Persecution and fear for his life.
* Seasons when he didn't feel spiritually renewed.
* Loneliness, rejection and abandonment.

In the midst of suffering he wanted to LIVE. His "soul was heavy" and so he prayed for STRENGTH.
This came from MEDITATING ON GOD'S WORD. He understood that even though trouble may come to him, GOD WORD WAS MORE VALUABLE.

"YOUR INSTRUCTIONS ARE MORE VALUABLE TO ME than thousands of pieces of gold and silver." Psalm 119:72 (NLT)

"It is one thing to say, "God has the right to do with me as He pleases". It is more important to say, "His judgements are right. In His faithfulness He has afflicted me." David Guzik

This is the place Job, Eli and the Shunamite woman came to in their afflictions.

"He said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!"Job 1:21 (NLT)

"So Samuel told Eli everything; he didn't hold anything back. "It is the Lord's will," Eli replied. "Let Him do what He thinks best." 1 Samuel 3:18 (NLT)

"Run to meet her and ask her: "Is everything alright with your husband and your child?" "Yes", the woman told Gehazi, "everything is fine." 2 Kings 4:26 (NLT)

These godly men and this woman prayed for an understanding of GOD'S MERCY. By staying close to God and His Word, they received His tender mercies. When David recalled GOD'S LOVE, MERCY AND FAITHFULNESS, he found comfort in the midst of his affliction.

"Remember YOUR WORD to your servant, in which you have given me hope. I depend on it. When I am HURTING, I FIND COMFORT. YOUR WORD has revived me, and YOUR PROMISES lead to life." Psalm 119:49&50  (NASB/NCV)

Again, in these verses, David is speaking of "how he is mocked for his faith". Yet he still continues to TRUST IN GOD'S WORD. When we remember God at night, WE GAIN STRENGTH IN THE DAY. The power of COMFORT AND STRENGTH comes from GOD'S WORD. "ideas and theories", they come from FAITH.

"In the dark of night, when tears and anxieties rush in upon us, we can find COMFORT in the name of the Lord." David Guzik

"May your lovingkindness COMFORT ME, according to YOUR WORD to Your servant. YOU LOVE ME, just as You have promised." Psalm 119:76 (NASB/NCV)

David enjoyed VICTORY because he knew the WORD OF GOD. He doesn't claim perfect obedience, but a life lived in FAITHFULNESS. We too are reminded that we are rescued in times of tribulation. God put His Spirit within us as "our helper and guide". He loves us as a Father who has adopted His children.

"When we understand the GOOD THAT ADVERSITY BRINGS, it causes us to lean into the difficulties of life. BE REAL, BE AUTHENTIC and allow yourself to BE HUMAN..... Be the BROKEN YOU. Be the FLAWED YOU. Be the IMPERFECT YOU. The light shines through the brokenness. It's the cracks that let the light in."  Benjamin Windle

"So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue the godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgement." 2 Peter 2:9 (NLT)

"When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all TRUTH. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future." John 16:13 (NLT)

"For His Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God's children.....And I am convinced that nothing can seperate us from GOD'S LOVE, Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,  neither our fears for today or our worries about tomorrow - not even the powers  of hell can seperate us from GOD'S LOVE." Romans 8:16 & 38 (NLT)

Finally, David shows us a sense of desperation and "fainting affliction". This is the idea of "life coming to an end". His soul aches as he WAITS FOR SALVATION. Yet again, HIS HOPE IS IN THE WORD OF GOD. There seems to be a loss of strength as "he collapses".

"I am exceedingly AFFLICTED. I am in terrible PAIN. SAVE ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD."Psalm 119:107 (NASB/NCV)

"TROUBLE AND ANGUISH have come upon me; yet YOUR COMMANDMENTS are my delight. I have not forgotten YOUR TEACHINGS." Psalm 119:143 (NASB/NCV)

"When we reach out with obedient FAITH, the pain may continue, but HIS COMFORT is always available to us." David Guzik

"Dear brothers, when TROUBLES of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity of GREAT JOY. For you know that when YOUR FAITH IS TESTED, YOUR ENDURANCE has a chance TO GROW. So, LET IT GROW, for when YOUR ENDURANCE is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." James 1:2-4 (NLT)'

YODH/RESH: GOD'S MERCY, GRACE AND FORGIVENESS IN HIS WORD - Read Psalm 119:17-80, 153-160

"Lord, how great is YOUR MERCY. Let me be revived - preserve my life, according to YOUR LAW AND DECREES." Psalm 119:156 (NLT)

GOD GRACIOUS MERCY TO US IS GREAT -"mercies piled on top of mercies". The ancient word for "MERCY" is "HEASED". It has always been translated with words like LOVE, KINDNESS and COMPASSION. It also means "COVENANT LOYALTY" and GRACE.

These "TENDER MERCIES" are like a Father to his child, like the compassion of a mother. They come to us when we are unable to go to them. In the New Testament, GRACE AND MERCY are said to give us greater confidence.

"Sin shall have no dominion over you, for we are not under the LAW, but UNDER GRACE."
                                                                                       Romans 6:14 (NIV)

With the knowledge that OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN because of Jesus' death on the cross, we have NEW LIFE.  No matter how much David sought after God to please Him, He would always be in need of GOD'S MERCY.

"While we have a natural right for MERCY, there is a spiritual one according to the PROMISES OF GOD." David Guzik

Time spent in GOD'S WORD gives us an oppportunity for REFLECTION, as we come to Him seeking repentance and obedience. Like David, we can pray in accordance with GOD'S LOVINGKINDNESS. We believe our Father and His Son Jesus are rich in GRACE AND MERCY.

"May your UNFAILING LOVE be my comfort, according to YOUR PROMISES to Your servant. Let YOUR COMPASSION come to me that I may live; YOUR LAW IS MY DELIGHT."            Psalm 119:77 (NIV)

LAMED/RESH: LIBERTY, FREEDOM, SALVATION AND REVIVAL FROM GOD'S WORD - Read 119:89-96, 153-160

"GOD'S WORD is a source and measure of REVIVAL." David Guzik

Psalm 119 is a PRAYER FOR REVIVAL. We need to be ALIVE to follow God's will. God gives us many ways to experience REVIVAL, but the greatest is THROUGH HIS WORD. We can also read Christian biographies, and experience the ministry in our Church. This is a PRAYER OF "CHANGE",
that again comes from our "MEDITATION ON GOD'S WORD."It us established eternally and changes the hearts and mind of His servants.

"God's Word brings LIFE, because it is ALIVE and it speaks to me......The Bible is not antique or modern, IT IS ETERNAL." Martin Luther, cited by James M Boice.

"And I will walk in LIBERTY and live in FREEDOM, because I want to seek and follow YOUR PRECEPTS (LAWS)." Psalm 119:45 (NKJV/NCV)

Having GOD'S WORD within us, we now have LIBERTY AND FREEDOM. We have the boldness to speak about God and to share our faith with others. This FREEDOM AND LIBERTY leads to a GREAT DELIGHT IN GOD'S WORD. God's love is manifested in the time and energy we spend in HIS WORD. It brings us life and safety. David recognized that SALVATION come from God. God would hear his prayers, as he does ours, and will SAVE US.

"I long for your SALVATION, O Lord. Your law is my delight." Psalm 119:174 (NKJV)

I will never forget YOUR PRECEPTS, for by them you have given me LIFE. I am Yours, SAVE ME; for I have sought YOUR PRECEPTS (ORDERS)." Psalm 119:93&94  (NKJV/NCV)

The wicked are far from salation, while Christians BELIEE AND TRUST in the Lord and have TRUE REIVAL. David sought REVIVAL, as we do, on the basis of God's love and kindness, not our own merit. This too is true of our SALVATION and NEW LIFE. Praying for REVIVAL we can be "made alive" in the righteousness of God.

"For by GRACE you have beenb SAVED through faith, and this is not of yourselves; it is a gift from God." Ephesians 2:8 (NKJV)

"Plead my cause and redeem me. REVIVE ME according to YOUR WORD. Great are Your tender mercies, O Lord. REVIVE ME according to Your judgements. Consider how I love your precepts; REVIVE ME according to Your lovingkindness." Psalm 119:154, 156, 159. (NKJV)

MEM: WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING FROM GOD'S WORD - Read Psalm 119:97-104

1, THE WORD MAKES ME WISER THAN MY ENEMIES.

The one who has a grasp on GOD'S WORD is able to overcome TEMPTATION. He is wiser than the devil. DIVINE WISDOM helps us RISE UP against the "negative effects" of those who drag us down.

"You, through Your commandments, MAKE ME WISER THAN MY ENEMIES. For thet are ever with me." Psalm 119:98 (NKJV)

2. THE WORD MAKES US WISER THAN OUR TEACHERS

The Lord says that the ones who STUDY HIS WORD have more INSIGHTS THAN THEIR TEACHERS. Why? Because we are growing, learning and developing a relationship with our Father God. It is not wrong to have TEACHERS, because this is where we learn about life and GOD'S WORD. Teachers are helpful when it comes to UNDERSTANDING GOD'S WORD, but we canb study, meditate and learn on our own, as long as we are not educated by the "world's standards". It is more effective WHEN GOD TEACHES US.

"I have MORE UNDERSTANDING THAN MY TEACHERS. For Your testimonies are my meditation." Psalm 119:99 (NKJV)

3. THE WORD GIVES US MORE INSIGHT THAN THE AGED

I encourage respect for the elderly. I have had many spiritual mentors and Christian friends over the years, who have helped me develop in my relationshio with God. But OBEYING GOD'S WORD helps me GAIN MORE UNDERSTANDING than many years withiout the Scriptures.

"But it is the Spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty that GIVES ME UNDERSTANDING. The abundance in years may not be WISE, nor many elders UNDERSTANDING." Job 38:8&9 (NLT)

"I have more UNDERSTANDING THAN THE ELDERS, for I obey your precepts."
                                                                             Psalm 119:100    (NIV)

As we read these verses, we can see three benefits that we gain from READING AND STUDYING GOD'S WORD.

1. WISDOM - LOOKING AT LIFE.

WISDOM is the ability to LOOK AT LIFE from God's point of view - an ETERNAL, HEAVENLY VIEWPOINT. As we see the world through WISE EYES we see the GOODNESS OF GOD. We see CIRCUMSTANCES AS OPPORTUNITIES.

2. KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT - SEEING THROUGH LIFE

KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT is the ability to SEE OUR LIVES through a spiritual viewpoint. We can see the "real causes" of certain situations. Teachers can communicate KNOWLEDGE, but the WORD ALONE gives you INSIGHT.

3. UNDERSTANDING - RESPONDING TO LIFE

UNDERSTANDING is the ability to respond to  LIFE'S SITUATIONS, again through God's viewpoint, not our own. We can learn from the DECISIONS WE MAKE by reading GOD'S WORD, even if things don't go the way we want them to. We can find that OUR ATTITUDES are important to God, but so too are OUR ACTIONS.

"In the same way, faith by  itself, if not accompanied by action, is dead." James 2:17 (NIV)

"I gain UNDERSTANDING FROM YOUR PRECEPTS; therefore I hate every wrong path."
                                                                                                     Psalm 119: 104  (NLT)

"We need to be disciples and LEARNERS. "TEACH ME!" What an honour to have God Himself as our teacher. How bold the psalmist was to beg the blessed God to teach us." Charles Spurgeon

"We must STUDY THE BIBLE carefully. The Holy Spirit is given to us to make OUR STUDY EFFECTIVE." James M Boice

There are wondrous things in the SCRIPTURES, but we can only see them when OUR EYES ARE OPEN with God's blessing and favour. David realized that he could not live without GOD'S WORD. He needed "new eyes" to see clearly with the eyes he had, He understood that he needed MORE UNDERSTANDING, not only WISOM AND KNOWLEDGE.

"Teach me, Lord, the ways of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. GIVE ME UNDERSTANDING, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart."
                                                   Psalm 119: 33&34 (NIV)

NUM/HETH - FOLLOWING THE LIGHT OF GOD'S WORD IN COMMITTMENT & SERVICE -  Psalm 119:105-112, 57-63

"You are my portion, O Lord, I have said I would keep YOUR WORDS. I entreated you favour WITH MY WHOLE HEART. I thought about my ways and TURNED MY FEET TO YOUR TESTIMONIES. I made haste and did not delay to keep your commandments." Psalm 119:59&60  (NKJV)

"Blessed are those who keep his statues, and SEEK HIM WITH ALL THEIR HEART."
                                                                                          Psalm 119:2 (NIV)

These are the words of a COMMITTMENT MAN.  He was met by GOD in HIS WORD. When we have GOD IN OUR LIVES, we truly have everything. With a SEEKING HEART he lived out a godly life.

"YOUR FAVOUR" literally means "YOUR FACE". This is how David sought the Lord - with a sense of urgency. We see here He was COMMITTED to reading and studying the WORD OF GOD. This "waiting and seeking experience" came from both "faith and experience".

"SEEK THE LORD and His strength. SEEK HIS FACE CONTINUALLY."                                                                                                               1 Chronicles 16:11 (NIV)

The Word of God "LIGHTS OUR PATHS AND MAKES OUR STEPS CLEAR". The Bible shows us simply, that WE ARE TO WALK ON THE PATH GOD WANTS US TO FOLLOW. How ate Christians to walk? Humbly and upright, IN THE LIGHT."

""Your word is a LAMP FOR MY FEET and a LIGHT ON MY PATH." Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

"As a prisoner for the Lord , then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely HUMBLE AND GENTLE; BE PATIENT, bearing with one another IN LOVE."
                                                                                      Ephesians 4:1&2 (NIV)

"But IF WE WALK IN THE LIGHT, AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT,  we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin." 1 John 1:7 (NIV)

None of these are possible without the WORD OF GOD LIGHTING OUR WAY. David showed a great determination to do this - by following God's will and being obedient to His Word. We too, as believers, feel at times that "steps are dangerous", and this is why we need a "LAMP" and a "LIGHT". The same God who LIGHTS OUR STEPS endures forever.

GOPH/TAU: PRAYING AND MEDITATION ON GOD'S WORD - Psalm 119:97-104, 147-152

Using PRAYER in the study of God's Word is essential. Froim the "heartfelt prayers" in this Psalm we can see that David was indeed "A MAN OF PRAYER". He desired a personal relationship with God, and He loved Him and HIS WORD.

The reflections in this Psalm include PETITIONS and "SUPPLICATIONS". David cries out for help from God to "assist him in his spiritual walk". This wonderful request comes as David is humbly kneeling before His Father.

"May my cry come before You, Lord; give me understanding according to Your Word. May my SUPPLICATION come before You; deliver me according to Your promises."                                                                                                              Psalm 119:69&70  (NKJV)

David depended on GOD AND HIS WORD. He woke early to seek the Lord IN PRAYER, and finished his day WITH PRAYER. In contrast to a "proud man", David was a "godly man" - after God's own heart. HE MEDITATED ON GOD'S WORD and PRAYED as he studied it. David MEDITATED with both his mind and his heart. He declared more time his "LOVE" for the WORD (THE LAW). This was a "personal expression" of his 'passiomate devotion." It was built on a LOVE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

"I rise before dawn and CRY FOR HELP. I have put my hope in the Word. My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I MAY MEDITATE ON YOUR PROMISES."                                                                                                             Psalm 119:147&148 (NKJV)

"Oh how I LOVE YOUR LAW. I MEDITATE ON IT all day long." Psalm 119:97 (NKLV)

"HE MEDITATED ON GOD'S WORD because HE LOVED IT. HEW LOVED GOD WORD because HE MEDITATED ON IT." Charles Spurgeonm

When you LOVE THE WORD it is natural to want to MEDITATE ON IT. I too love reading, meditating and studying GOD'S WORD, in the morning and evening. This is how I usually spend my days off.  Why? I believe it is because of my father's love for the Bible. Every night before we went to bed, he would sit my sisters and I on his knee, to read us Bible Stories and children's devotions.

As Christians we need to do more than just "read the Bible". We need to:

* Give it more of our "time, attention and care".
* Have a "truly listening ear", as we pray in the Word.
* Give God and His Word "our honour," as we "value every word and promise."
* Speak to others about what "we have learned from it."

Like David, we can come near to God, for HIS WORD IS TRUE and INSPIRED,  We PRAY AND MEDITATE with our "whole heart", knowing God will speak to us with all LOVINGKINDNESS AND JUSTICE.

"Cause me to understand the way of your precepts, that I MAY MEDITATE on your wonderful deeds" Psalm 119:27 (NIV)

"I MEDITATE on your precepts and CONSIDER YOUR WAYS. I  delight in Your decrees, I WILL NOT NEGLECT YOUR WORD." Psalm 119:15&16  (NIV)

SHIN/TAW: PRAISE AND WORSHIP OF GOD'S WORD - Read Psalm 119:161-176

David found it not only important to PRAISE GOD in this Psalm, but it was part of his whole life. Not even difficult trials could take away HIS LOVE FOR GOD'S WORD. He loved it as some people do treasure, The goodness and glory of the WORD OF GOD prompted "constant and continual" PRAISE AND WORSHIP.

"It is good to make regular time for PRAYER, PRAISE and REFLECTION on the BIBLE - throughout every day". Charles Bridges

"Do we PRAISE GOD seven times a day, or once every seven days." Charles Spurgeon

"Seven days I PRAISE YOU because of your righteous judgement." Psalm 119:164 (NIV)

The great LOVE David had for GOD'S WORD also brought him great peace and stability in his life.

"Shalom" is a large embracing word for the good to those God favours." James M Boice

"Great peace have those who love the law, and nothing can make them stumble."                                                                                                              Psalm 119:165 (NIV)

David wanted to PRAISE GOD and to tell other why HE WAS SINGING THESE PRAISES. He was determined that OTHERS WOULD PRAISE HIM TOO. He would PRAISE GOD because of his studies of the WORD OF GOD which gave himan understanding the TRUTH. Knowing the PURITY and MERCY of GOD'S WORD made him even more confident to SHARE IT.

We too can PRAISE THE LORD for we receive the same UNDERSTANDING, DELIVERANCE, POWER, RIGHTEOUSNESS, STRENGTH and PERSEVERENCE that Davud received, as we too READ AND STUDY GOD'S WORD.

"My lips shall UTTER PRAISE, for you teach me your statues.....Let my soul love and I SHALL PRAISE YOU; let your judgements help me." Psalm 117&119 (NKJV)

"Rejoice always, pray continually, GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES for this is God's will in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

PSALM 118 - A PSALM FOR EASTER

INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 118; 2 Samuel 6:12-18;           Ezra 3:8-13; Matthew 21:1-11

This is a great time of year to read this Psalm. It is not only the final Egyptian Hallel Psalm which is sung at Passover Festivsals, but it is also a great Messianic Psalm celebrating the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ, with his DEATH ON THE CROSS and his RESURRECTION,

Mose commentators believe it was written by David, though it does not have a stated author. It is likely to have been first sung when David and his people brought the Ark of the Lord back into the city of Jerusalem, after it had been taken by the Philistines.

"Then David danced befor the Lord with all his might.... David and all the house of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the trumpet." 2 Samuel 6:14&15 (NLT)

In Ezra Chapter 3, David is mentioned at the restoration of the New Temple in Jerusalem, when the people had returned after their Babylonian exile.

"When the builders completed the foundation of the Lord's Temple, the priests put on their robes and took their places to blow their trumpets. The Levites, descendents of Asaph, clashed their cymbals to praise the Lord, just as King David had prescribed." Ezra 3:10 (NLT)

"It shows David's hand of the Master and his spirit and style, and clearly David's grand ability, the subject was mobility." Adam Clarke, cited by David Guzik.

This was also Jesus' Psalm - a Messianic prophecy - "a song of triump", as we see Jesus coming into Jerusalenm on what we call "Palm Sunday"

"The procession carries branches, moving from the Temple Gateway (the Gates of Jerusalem) to the Altar (the Cross). " Pat and David Alexander.

"How much these words in Psalm 118 would have meant to Jesus as He sung them in the upper room, the night before His crucifixioon." G. Campbell Morgan. cited by David Guzik.

On Easter Sunday, we today, as Jesus' followers often sing parts of this Psalm to celebrate, with JOY AND GLADNESS, the RESURRECTION OF OUR SAVIOUR,.

"Christians see in this movement from HUMILIATIION TO EXULTATION a foreshadow of Jesus. He is RESCUED FROM DEATH, a new exodus, a fresh sigh that GOD'S STEADFAST LOVE ENDURES FOREVER." Richard Clifford, cited by Nacy Koster.

"But now CHRIST IS RISEN, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man came the RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD.                                  1 Corinthians 15:20&21

WHAT A WONDERFUL PSALM IS THIS FOR THE EASTER SEASON!

GOD'S LOVE ENDURES FOREVER - Read Psalm 118:1-4; 1 John 4:7-21

"Give thanks to the Lord for HE IS GOOD, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER."                     Psalm 118:1 (NIV)

David "stirs up" everyone to join with him in his "cheerful acknowledgement" of GOD'S GOODNESS. Many of his Psalms call upon God's people to sing PRAISE AND THANKS  for HIS GOODNESS. David was full of God's goodness too, being "a man after God's own heart". It was always on God's mind and He loved to share it with others.

"GOD'S GOODNESS IS SO GREAT and apparent that it deserves emphatic PRAISE." David Guzik

David also loved to celebrate GOD'S MERCY AND LOVE. In the ancient Jewish context, these verses are part of a Temple Liturgy, used in Festivals, particularly the Passover. We hear the jubilant "calland response" to Isael (God's People), the House of Aaron (Priests) and the Gentiles (those who fear the Lord).

God's people who proceed to the Temple with these words on their lips are "righteous" an d "victorious". Since God has saved them in the past, they knew HIS LOVE AND MERCY could be depended upon in the future. They knew "it would never be taken from His people". This isn't the only passage in the Bible that speaks of GOD'S LOVE.

"Long ago the Lord said to Israel: "I HAVE LOVED YOU, my people, WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE". With an UNFAILING LOVE I have drawn  you to myself." Jeremiah 31:3

"I am convinced that nothing can seperate you from GOD'S LOVE. Neither death nor life, neith angels nor demons, neither our fears today or our worries about tomorrow - not even the powers of hell can seperate us from GOD'S LOVE. Indeed, nothing in all creation can seperate us FROM THE LOVE OF GOD that is REVEALED IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD." Romans 8:38&39

"God showed how much HE LOVED US by sending His Son into the world, so that we might have eternal life through Him...... THIS IS REAL LOVE - not that we loved God but that HE LOVED US and has sent His Son to be a sacrifioce for our sins." 1 John 4:8&10

David, who we believe to be the writer of this Psalm,  recently expressed THANKS FOR GOD'S LOVE. It is a tone of POSITIVETY AND APPRECIATION for all that He has done for us, through ther coming of His Son - and what He will continue to do,

"This is the last Hallel Psalm that Jesus would have sung at the Passover. He went to the CROSS with complete knowledge that His FATHER'S LOVE AND MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER." David Guzik

TRUST IN THE LORD - Read Psalm 118:5-8; Proverbs 3:5&6

ANSWERED PRAYERS

"In my distress, I PRAYED TO THE LORD. The LORD ANSWERED ME and set me free."          Psalm 118:5

David was in great distress and suffered many trials, but this gave him even more experience of God's goodness. Jesus too suffered, especially when it came to the time when it was coming up to his crucifixion.  His friends forsook Him at his greatest time of need - at the CROSS.

"It is wonderful to think of Jesus singing these words on the night he was betrayed and arrested. Jesus would call on His Father and receive a faithful answer to his prayers in the garden"
David Guzik

But, both David and Jesus both recognized that they had their FATHER'S LOVE in their lives, and He was always  by their side no matter what they faced,. David understood that in the midst of calamity and loneliness - GOD WAS WITH HIM, "He promised to guard and cherish His people forever".  We can live in assurance, calm, knowing He will always LISTEN TO OUR PRAYERS AND ANSWER THEM. They may not be answered in the way we want, but we know He cares for us and knows our every need.

"The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid. What can mere man do to me? HE IS MY HELPER.  I look in triumph on enemies." Psalm 118:6&7

"You don't need to be alone. We have assurance that in the storms of life Jesus is on our side to share them with us and renew our courage." Billy Graham

TRUST IN THE LORD

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean  not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5&6

"It is better to TRUST THE LORD than to trust in people. Is is better to TRUST THE LORD than to trust princes." Psalm 118:8&9

David believed in the Lord Jesus long before He came to the earth and he wanted his people to trust in Him too. Despite trouble around us, we can love and TRUST THE LORD. We have nothing to fear if we put our TRUST both Jesus and His Father.

"Although you may be tempted to trust in earthly things more than God, have more confidence in Him than anyone else." Max Lucado

THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND MY SALVATION -            Read Psalm 118:10-14; Exodus 15

In the pattern of Hebrew poetry this part of the Psalm is very repititious. David knew that were times that he was surrounded by enemiesm, but he also knew that the POWER and VICTORY was not of himself, but "IN THE NAME OF THE LORD". David triumphed over his enemies has he continued to trust in the Lord.

"The Lord is my STRENGTH and my SONG; He has become my SALVATION." Exodus 15:2a

Quoting Moses and Miriam  song from Exodus 15, David knew that only God could be His "STRENGTH AND SONG". To those who trusted in Him, He also became THEIR "SALVATION". This was true from God's people, the Israelite, and we know, when Jesus died on the cross, it became true for us today.

OUR STRENGTH

God is the resource for all our needs, and just as Moses led the people to believe, He would continue to be their strength always, as they travelled through the "wilderness, " He is our strength each day.

"In your unfailing love you led you people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling." Exodus 15:13 (NIV)

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1 (NKLV)

OUR SONG

God gives JOY an d HAPPINESS in OUR SONG. We find our purpose in our life in Him.

"Therefore, you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and you HEART WILL REJOICE; and YOUR JOY no one will take from you."  John16:22 (NKJV)

OUR SALVATION

We can trust God for VICTORY and DELIVERANCE from all sin and evil. It is important to SEEK GOD so we can rest in HIS SALVATION.

"For by grace you have been saved throiugh faith, and not of yourselves, it is a gift from God."
Epesians 2:8 (NKJV)

David triumphed in his His trust because:

* The Lord was on His side.
* The Lord stood up for him.
* The Lord was His strength, song and salvation.

THE LORD IS MY LIFE AND MY VICTORY -                         Read Psalm 118: 15-18, Romans 6&15; Hebrews 12

JOY AND VICTORY

As well as a Passover Hymn, this song was sung as one of "JOY and VICTORY" at the Feast of the Tabernacles. Repeatedly David praised the "right hand of God", recognizing His strength, power and might.

"SHOUTS OF JOY AND VICTORY resound in the tents of the righteous. "THE LORD'S RIGHT HAND HAS DONE MIGHTY THINGS. THE LORD'S RIGHT HAND IS LIFTED HIGH. The Lord's right hand has done mighty things." Psalm 118:15&16 (NIV)

We may feel weak, but GOD IS OMNIPOTENT and acts "VALIANTLY" on our behalf. We need to "exalt Him with OUR PRAISES."

I WILL NOT DIE, BUT LIVE!

"I will not die, BUT LIVE and TELL WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE." Psalm 118:17

David was confident that God would keep him from death. Jesus too was confident of his truth. He knew that "death had no hold on Him". He knew that He would RAISED TO LIFE after His crucifixion.

"These words had great meaning for Jesus before the cross. He would endure His Father's puroseful suffering and yet not be given over to eternal death". David Guzik

"We are sure of this because Jesus Christ was RAISED FROM THE DEAD and He will never die again. Death no longer has any power over Him." Romans 6:9

"Martin Luther was a great man of God who faced threats on his life because of his reformation preaching. It is believed he had this verse written on the wall of his study: "I SHALL NOT DIE, BUT LIVE; AND RECOUNT THE DEEDS OF THE LORD." Charles Spurgeon

Martin Luther is said to have "a strong connection with this Psalm". Like David, his love for and faith in God was "passionate". He was inspired by Jesus' words:

"I am the Resurrection and the Life. He who believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live."
John 11:27 (NIV)

Just as David was delivered by God, so Christ empowers us and "snatches us out of the realms of death". David understood that he needed the chastisement (discipline) of the Lord for training and correction. But he would not allow it to destroy him. The same is true for us. Like David and Luther, God wants us to proclaim to others the valiant and glorious things that God and His Son have done - particularly HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION.

"The Lord has punished me severly, but he did not let me die." Psalm 118:18 (NLT)

"No discipline is enjoyable while is it happening; it is painful. But afterward, there will be a PEACEFUL HARVEST of RIGHT LIVING for those who are trained in its way."                                                                                                                 Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)

PALM SUNDAY - Read Psalm 118:19-21; 2 Samuel 6;            Ezra 6:13-22; Matthew 21:1-11

"Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will go through them and I will praise the Lord."
                                                                                                    Psalm 118:19 (NKJV)

David probably had in mind when he wrote this Psalm "the triumphal entry into Jerusalem - the Holy City." With gates open, he could go through and PRAISE THE LORD. This would probably have been the time when he had been bring the Ark of God back into his city.

"David dance with all his might  before the Lord.....David and all the Israelites shouted with joy and blew their trumpets as they brought the ARK OF THE LORD into the city.....David put up a Tent for the Ark of the Lord, and then the Israelites put the ARK in its place in the TENT."                                                                                                               2 Samuel 6:14,15&17

Ezra cited this Psalm when the people came into the new Jerusalem, The ARK would now be placed inside the TEMPLE, and the Priests and the priests could go in at certain times into "the presence of the Lord", to make sacrifices of the Jewish people and the "non Jewish people who had given up their unclean ways."

"This is the gate of the Lord, through which the righteous shall enter." Psalm 118:20

"Blessed be your wonderful name. It is more wonderful than blessing and praisings. You are the Only God....the angels of God worship you." Nehemiah 6:5&6b

Finally we think about Jesus. David is prophesying Jesus' entry into to gates of Jerusalem, on the day we call "Palm Sunday", the beginning of Holy Week.

"David promised to give thanks to God for our coming Messiah  and ultimate salvation."            Matthew Henry.

This took place to fulfill another prophecy:

"Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion. Shout, daughter Jerusalem. SEE YOUR KING COMES TO YOU, RIGHTEOUS AND VICTORIOUS, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." Zechariah 9:9

"Jesus was in the centre of the procession and the people all around Him were shouting, "Praise God, the Son of David. Blessings on the One who comes in the name of the Lord. PRAISE GOD IN THE HIGHEST HEAVEN." Matthew 21:9

"A large crowd of Pharisees and visitors took palm branches and went down to the road to meet Him: They shouted: "Praise God! Blessings on the One who comes in the Name of the Lord. HAIL THE KING OF ISRAEL." John 12:13

"David desired admission into God's sanctuary, there to celebrate the glory of the COMING MESSIAH. He is the "GATE OF THE TEMPLE", by whom the righteous shall enter."               Matthew Henry

After completing His work at the CROSS and HIS RESURRECTION, Jesus would be received into HEAVEN'S GATES through HIS ASCENSION. We too will enter these GATES if we righteously accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and SING HIS PRAISES.

"Yes, I AM THE GATE. Those who come through me will be saved. They will come and go freely with good pastures." John 10:9

THE LORD IS MY CORNERSTONE - Read Psalm 118:22&23; Isaiah 28:16; Acts 4:1-21; 1 Peter 2:4-10

"The STONE which the builder's rejected have now become THE CORNERSTONE."Psalm 118:22

"We don't know what personal experience led David to write these words, but we do know it was a prophetic statement about Jesus,  because it certainly fulfilled His work." David Guzik

The principal reference to the CORNERSTONE is JESUS CHRIST. Jesus was rejected and humiliated by His own people:

* They didn't approve of His origin.
* They didn't approve of His education.
* They didn't approve of His lack of religious tradition.
* They didn't approve of His choice of friends,.

"How does He know so much when He hasn't been trained?" John 7:25

"But some Pharisees said: "Why are you breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?"
Luke 6:2

"The Pharisees asked His disciples: "Why does your teacher each with such scum?" Matthew 9:11

We do know that Jesus is the ONE referred to in these other scriptures; both prophetic and after he had returned to His Father.

"Therefore, thus says the Lord God: "I lay in Zion a STONE for a FOUNDATION, a TRIED STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNERSTONE, A SURE FOUNDATION; whoever believes will not act hastily."Isaiah 28:16

"The STONE which the builders rejected has become A CHIEF CORNERSTONE. Their SALVATION is in no one else! God has given no other Name under Heaven by which you must be SAVED." Acts 4:11&12

"Behold, I lay in Zion A CHIEF CORNERSTONE, elect and precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame." 1 Peter 2:6

The CORNERSTONE was an important STONE that held together two stones at the corner - THE FOUNDATION - it stabilized all the other stones. The "CHIEF CORNERSTONE - JESUS CHRIST" - is our foundation, through which we have SALVATION AND ETERNAL LIFE.

"Jesus would have had tears in His eyes as He sang these verses, He knew he would be rejected, yet He would still be the 'CHIEF CORNERSTONE'. " David Guzik

RESURRECTION SUNDAY - LET US REJOICE  -             Psalm 118:24-27

"This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24

David wrote Psalms in the "wilderness" and in "caves". He wasn't always in a palace! But he felt that every day deserved a chance to be a good one - a chance to REJOICE! Why? Because they were all GOD'S DAYS! David's days, like ours, weren't always "stress free", but he didn't do a lot of grumbling. Like Paul, he learnt that it was better to PRAISE AND THANK THE LORD.

"Always be full of joy in the Lord! I say it again - REJOICE! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don't worry about anying, instead, PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING. Tell God what you need and THANK HIM for all He has done. Then you will experience GOD'S PEACE, which exceeds anything we can understand. HIS PEACE will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:4-7 (NLT)

You can't change, alter or improve PAST DAYS, so don LIVE TODAY WITH REGRETS. You can't live TODAY with the cares of TOMORROW; so just give each NEW DAY to the Lord. Don't worry about what the future may hold!   GIVE EACH NEW DAY GOD HAS MADE A CHANCE!

* Saturate your day with GOD'S GRACE.
* Enturst your day with GOD'S OVERSIGHT.
* Accept HIS DIRECTION!

                                         FILL YOUR DAY WITH GOD!

"The faithful love of the Lord never ends. His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh every morning." Lamentations 3:22&23 (NLT)

We will rejoice and be glad, like David,  with each new day God has made.

"Easter is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it." Nancy Koester

A few days ago we celebrated GOOD FRIDAY, when we remember, Jesus our Redeemer and Saviour, who died on the cross for our sins - "His great atoning sacrifice". Although we now celebration Resurrection Sunday, we still need to immerse ourselves in his GRACE AND REDEMPTION.  Because of both Jesus' DEATH AND RESURRECTION we can now live a NEW ETERNAL LIFE.

"Now if we died with Christ, WE ALSO LIVE WITH HIM. For we know that since Christ was RAISED FROM THE DEAD, He cannot die again, death no longer has mastery over Him. The death He died, He died for sin once for all; BUT THE LIFE HE LIVES, HE LIVES TO GOD.... for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE in Christ Jesus our Lord."                                                                                                                Romans 6:8-10, 23

"The Lord is shining upon us. Take the sacrifice and bind it with cords on the altar."   Psalm 118:27

"Jesus said: "I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness but will have the LIGHT OF LIFE." John 8:12

There is a brief, but important focus on Yahweh, the TRUE GOD, who gave His Son willingly to die for us. God showed us the LIGHT - JESUS CHRIST - He shone upon us so we could have ETERNAL LIFE in Him. As he sang these word "to bind" him to the "the altar" (the cross) Jesus was making a "holy sacrifice". These were leading into David's words of significant PRAISE.

"Jesus echoed these words in the Upper Room, singing His praise and exultation, evidence of Hius submission to God His Father."  David Guzik

CONCLUSION: PRAISE and THANKS - Read Psalm 118:28&29;

"You are my God and I WILL PRAISE YOU, You are my God, I WILL EXALT YOU! GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD for He is good. His faithful love endures forever." Psalm 118: 28&29

David concludes with a THANKFUL acknowledgment to His Father God. He began with "heartfelt, exuberant praises" and ends with the same.

* He will PRAISE AND EXALT THE LORD.
* He will GIVE THANKS TO JESUS - His great Redeemer.
* In  Him, he has shown  HIS GREAT LOVE AND MERCY  "that endures forever."

David give PRAISE for His PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE blessings. He does not believe in "delaying praise or thanks for any reason". Not only does he sing HIS OWN PRAISES, but he encourages others to to join him. Christians today can still be assured that if they START EACH DAY WITH PRAISE we can END IT WITH PRAISE, no matter what our circumstances.

"Always be joyful. Never stop praying. BE THANKFUL IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, for this is God's will for all who belong to Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)

Jesus Himself received unending LOVE AND MERCY from His Father, and we can be assured it will be given to us, through Him.

"What better close to a royal song! The Psalmist could not have RISEN to anything HIGHER. He had reached the heart of the Grandeur and THERE HE PAUSED!"  Charles Spurgeon

PSALM 117 - LET EVERYONE SING GOD'S PRAISES

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 117

Psalm 117 is the middle Chapter in the Bible. It is also the shortest and "sweetest" Psalm, full of "amazing truths".

"It is very little in letter but exceedingly large in Spirit......it calls upon all mankind to PRAISE THE LORD." Charles Spurgeon

"Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol Him all you peoples." Psalm 117:1 (NIV)

This is the second last of the Egyptian Hallel Psalms, which were sung before and after the Jewish Passover Meal. We remember that Jesus sang this SONG OF PRAISE with His disciples in the Upper Room on the night of His betrayal and address.

The question is not whether WE SHOULD praise the Lord, but WHY SHOULD WE praise Him. I have been studying the Psalms for many years now and David has continually convinced me that this is indeed THE WAY THE LIVE MY LIFE. But, like David, also did in his life, we too often lose our often loose our focus and forget WHO we are praising - OURSELVES,  OTHERS or GOD.

"Whether we are in the MIDST OF BLESSING, or in the MIDST OF SUFFERING, you must PRAISE THE LORD., Whether you believe you NEED GOD, or YOU DON'T, you must PRAISE THE LORD, There are NO OPTIONS!" Don Liesemer

"For His UNFAILING LOVE is powerful and HIS FAITHFULNESS endures forever. PRAISE THE LORD." Psalm 117:2 (NLT)

WHO PRAISES THE LORD? - Read Psalm 117:1;              Romans 15:7-13

The Psalmists calls "all nations", specifically the Gentiles, to PRAISE THE LORD."

"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, Praise Him, all you peoples of the earth." Romans 15:11 (NLT)

Verse 1 was not a regular command to the Jewish people to PRAISE THE LORD, it was a "global invitation". God's salvation went beyond the border of Israel. God's call to the Gentiles and other nations showed that He wants us all to have a relationship with His Son Jesus Christ.

"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world, through Him, might be saved." John 3:17 (NKJV)

Paul also reminds us that this offer of salvation and eternal life is for both the Jews and the Gentiles. What more do we have to PRAISE GOD FOR? Paul references these verses from Psalm 17 and Isaiah several times, to help drive home "GOD'S REDEMPTION  PLAN FOR THE GENTILES."

"Among you also are called to Jesus Christ; to all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints." Romans 1:3&4 (NLT)

"This is what the Psalmist meant when he wrote: "For this I will PRAISE YOU AMONG THE GENTILES; I will SING PRAISES TO YOUR NAME." And in another place it is written: "REJOICE WITH HIS PEOPLE, YOU GENTILES." Romans 15:9&10 (NLT)

"And in another place Isaiah said: "The heir of David's throne will come and He will rule over the Gentiles. THEY WILL PLACE THEIR HOPE IN HIM." Romans 15:12 (NLT)

WHY DO WE PRAISE THE LORD? - Read Psalm 117:2

The Psalmist gives 2 reasons why we should praise the Lord:

1. HIS MERCIFUL KINDNESS (LOVE) that is great.

2. HIS TRUTH (FAITHFULNESS) that is eternal.

GOD'S LOVE, MERCY AND KINDNESS

We've been singing about GOD'S LOVE our whole lives. Why do still feel we need to earn it? God's love is different than any other:

* He loves us even when we at our worse.
* He promises to always love us.
* We can never get outside of God's tender love.

When we think about GOD'S GREAT LOVE in sending His Son Jesus to die for us. "we are drawn to PRAISE AND WORSHIP."

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but will have eternal life." John 3:16 (NIV)

"For His MERCIFUL KINDNESS is great toward us." Psalm 117:2a (NIV)

"God has shown mercy mixed with kindness to the very highest degree. We can all join with grateful acknowledgement and in PRAISE THAT IS DUE." Charles Spurgeon

"GOD'S LOVE is the fountain of all comforts and HIS FAITHFULNESS the fountain of all our hopes. We must PRAISE THE LORD for both." Matthew Henry

GOD'S EVERLASTING FAITHFULNESS

There are many things in this life that will let you down, but God is not one of them. GOD'S TRUTH IS COMPLETELY FAITHFUL! That thought should lead us to PRAISE. God always keeps His promises. Here are just a few:

* Salvation for everyone - when we seek his forgiveness.
* His Second Coming  - when we will sing His praises in the New Jerusalem.

"The truth of the Lord endures forever and He keeps His covenant promises. He will keep every single covenant promise to all those who PUT THEIR TRUST IN HIM." Charles Spurgeon

"The faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord" Psalm 117:2b (NLT)

The Bible is full of exhortations to PRAISE THe LORD. But why are they so important? PRAISING THE LORD is one thing we can sure we will continue to do in eternity.

"Amen! PRAISE, glory, wisdom, THANKS, honour, power and strength be to our God forever and ever." Revelation 7:12

But let's not wait till we get to Heaven. Let's not HOLD BACK OUR PRAISES each and every day! For God's MERCY, KINDNESS, LOVE, TRUTH and FAITHFULNESS are for EVERYONE - JEW and GENTILE - RIGHT NOW, TODAY!!

CONCLUSION - THANKSGIVING ALL YEAR ROUND - Read 1 Chronicles 16:8-13, 23-26

This Psalm concludes as it began, with another HALLELUJAH - PRAISE THE LORD!

The beautiful hymn: "We Plough the Fields and Scatter" is usually sung in America during their Thanksgiving, and in Church Harvest Festival Services. It could also be a good song, like this Psalm, for Jewish Passover Festivals. David wrote many Psalms to guide his PRAISE AND WORSHIP, but it wasn't only during Passove and Thanksgiving Festivals.

"Give PRAISE TO THE LORD, proclaim His Name,  make known among the nations what He has done.......LET THE HEARTS OF THOSE WHO SEEK THE LORD, REJOICE."                                                                                                            1 Chronicles 16:8&10

We can also sing these praise songs "ALL YEAR ROUND", when we want to remind ourselves of God's love, goodness and faithfulness. Two centuries ago Matthius Claudius, the son of a Pastor, a German Poet, wrote:

"We thank thee O Father, for all things bright and good.
The seed time, the harvest; our life, our health, our food.
Now gifts we offer, for all Thy love imparts,
But that which Thou desires, our humble, thankful hearts.

All good gifts around us are sent from Heaven above.
Then THANK THE LORD, O THANK THE LORD, for all His love."
                                                                                       Matthias  Claudius
We need to BE THANKFUL EVERY DAY, all year round; for God supplies all our needs! PRAISE THE LORD!

PSALM 116 - DEALING WITH GRIEF GOD'S WAY

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 116

"Grief is part of being human, but WE CAN EMBRACE GRIEF as GOD EMBRACES US."                                                                                                                                      Dr Tony Evans

Gried is part of life. We can't get rid of it or ignore it, but we can face it's "challenges" and "embrace it".

Saved from death, in answer to his prayers, this unknown Psalmist makes a "thank offering" in the Temple. There were memories of terrible times, when the "grave" was close and fear was "vividly present". He understood the "grind of grief and sorrow too well." We don't know the details that brought him to his knees "in mourning", but we can gather from the "clues" that it invoked DEATH.

"The cords of death encompassed him as well as the terrors of Sheol (the grave). He was brought low and the Lord rescued him from his tears." Charles Swindoll.

After spending time in GOD'S PRESENCE the Psalmist was "put firmly back on his feet"; with a clear perspective of life and death. What began with words of sorrow, ended with PRAISES AND HALLELUJAHS!

"After a close call with death, the unknown Psalmist THANKS GOD for answering his prayers; and PRAISES HIM for his deliverance. PRAISE should be a NATURAL RESULT OF ANSWERED PRAYER." Max Lucado

"I will offer you a THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE and call on the name of the Lord. HALLELUJAH." Psalm 116:17&19  (NRSV)

I LOVE THE LORD - Read Psalm 116:1-11

The first half of this Psalm - Verses 1-11 - are the Psalmist lament, a man surrounded by grief and sorrow. Yet he knows that the Lord is always with him.

* The Lord hears him.
* The Lord cares for him.
* The Lord will rescue him.

And as we read these verses we too can receive encouragement and joy, knowing that they are true for us too, if we LOVE GOD and PRAY TO HIM.

1. THE LORD HEARS US

"I love the Lord because HE HAS HEARD MY VOICE  and MY SUPPLICATIONS. Because HE HAS INCLINED HIS EAR TO ME, therefore, I will call on Him as long  as I live."                                                                                                                   Psalm 116:1&2 (NIV)

Other versions of the Scriptures talk about the Lord in a similar way:

* "listening to his prayers".
* "hearing his cries for mercy".
* "turnin His ear to hin."

God pays attention to what we have to say when we come to HIM IN PRAYER. "He leans closer to truly hear what you have to say".

WHY IS PRAYER SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE GRIEVING PROCESS?

When we are in need, specifically in times of grief and sorrow, coming to God in prayer, "brings us in harmony with His will."  Grief also brings ANGER, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION - to name just a few emotions - but God is always ready to HEAR US!

"The important thing is to CALL ON HIM and to TRUST IN HIM to ANSWER YOU."
                                                                                                Dr Tonyy Evans

"Answer me when I call you. my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer." Psalm 4:1 (NIV)

2. THE LORD CARES FOR U

"The LORD IS GRACIOUS and righteous; OUR GOD IS FULL OF COMPASSION...... I was brought low. HE SAVED ME." Psalm 119:5&6b

Some tragic circumstances had surrounded the Psalmist. They had caused him to fear that he was near death:

* "the chords of death entangled me and wrapped me in anguish".
* "the ropes of death bound me."
* "the torments of Sheol (the grave) overcame and took hold of me."
* "I encountered trouble and sorrow."
* "I suffered distress and anguish."

Grief and sorrow became so intense and death felt imminent. He even confessed to doubting the Lord - "foolishness, simpleness, helplessness" - but the LORD WAS HIS PROTECTOR AND SAVIOUR. He called to God in distress. His brief prayer: "SAVE ME" expressed a deep plea of desperation. In this prayer he affirmed 3 of God's attributes:

* HIS GRACIOUSNESS - extended in "undeserved favour."
* HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS - "depicting integrity"
* HIS COMPASSION - a deep feeling of "God's tender care" for our needs as "He watches over us."

We need to join with the Psalmist in praying, "LORD SAVE ME". God is always caring for us in whatever situation we may be grieving over, whether it is the loss of a loved one or our own illness or anxiety.  These have all caused me normal grief symptoms, but so too has job loss, and this took me a long time to recover from. Eventuaklly though, like the Psalmist, I was able to "REST IN THE LORD".

WHY WAS THE PSALMIST ABLE TO REST IN THE LORD?

"Return to my REST, my soul, for THE LORD HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME." Psalm 116:7 (NIV)

The Psalmist fully realized that God was his DELIVERER FROM GRIEF. REST depicts a place of "unthreatened security", like the nesting place of a bird, or as David tells us in Psalm 23, the quiet waters suitable for sheep.

"The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters." Psalm 23:1&2 (NIV)

Doctors tells us we need PHYSICAL REST, but the Bible encourages us to REST IN GOD. The Lord Jesus told His followers to come to Him with their burdens, for this was their way of finding ULTIMATE REST AND SECURITY.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

With this rest and security provided by God we can courageously face our difficulties. Joshua did this and was reminded that GOD'S PRESENCE WAS ALWAYS WITH HIM. The Psalmist too realized that "God was his source of deliverence" from his earlier threatened death. God had dried up  the tears in his eyes and "kept his feet from stumbling". He was indeed "resting" in the PRESENCE OF THE LORD.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

"For you Lord have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling."
                                                                                                Psalm 116:8 (NIV)

3. HE RESCUES US
" I WALKED BEFORE THE LORD in the land of the living; I KEPT MY FAITH, even when I said, "I am greatly afflicted." Psalm 116:9&10 (NIV)

Like the Psalmist, I would say that I am somewhat of "a specialist" when it comes to experiencing GRIEF, and learning how TO WALK WITH GOD and GROWING IN MY FAITH. My family members are in Heaven, and along with a number of health scares of my own, I have also had other "loss" experiences. I can't say they have been easy and the "healing" hasn't happened overnight; but my mother and father taught me that in their lowest times, "THEY WERE NEVER ALONE". When the negative emotions such as ANGER, ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION have overwhelmed me, and like the Psalmist I've had "soul crushing burdens to bear", I know I HAVE NOT HAD TO BEAR THEM ALONE.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WALK BEFORE THE LORD AND TRUST IN HIM?

The word "WALK" means to "LIVE" . When we "WALK WITH GOD" we are living our lives with Him - obedient to His will.

Although severely afflicted,  the Psalmist could still ultimately TRUST IN THE LORD, because he experienced deliverance from his grief and salvation from sin. We too can find fulfillment no other way.

"You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance." Psalm 32:7 (NIV(

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came through Jesus Christ." Romans 3:23&24 (NIV)

"In response to his deliverance, he WALKED BEFORE THE LORD and lived a way that honoured God - OBEDIENCE, SURRENDER AND COMPLETE TRUST." Dr Tony Evans

WHAT SHALL I RENDER TO HIM? - Read Psalm 116:12-19

God has never failed to embrace me in my times of need. He has always been there, and in this second part of this Psalm - Verses 12-19 the Psalmist now tells us 3 things we need to do when we ask these questions:

* What shall we render the Lord?
* How can we return our thanks?
* How can we render our appreciation for all He has done for us?

1. WE SHALL PROCLAIM THE LORD'S BENEFITS.

"How can I repay the Lord for the good He has done for me? I will take the CUP OF SALVATION and CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD." Psalm 116:12&13 (CSB)

WHAT DOES "I SHALL LIFT UP MY CUP OF SALVATION"MEAN?

The word "CUP" means "ABUNDANCE", partically in the Old Testament. In Psalm 23, David speaks of his "cup running over" or "overflowing". Here the Psalmist expresses PRAISE TO GOD for his abundant deliverance from "grief and sorrow".

"As New Testament Christians we share our "CUP" with our Saviour - Jesus Christ. The 'CUP OF SALVATION' is like the wine we drink at Communion, our "thank offering" that has given us abundant life, when Jesus gave His life for us.

God has not only deliverance us from sickness, danger and difficulty, but with the "CUP OF SALVATION" we have "eternal life" and are delivered from the "grind of grief and sorrow"; for one day we will meet our family again in Heaven, and celebrate the New Jerusalem with Jesus and His Father God.

2. WE SHALL PAY OUR VOWS

"I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of His people" Psalm 116:14 (CSB)

This lament of grief and sorrow nakes a positive turn as the Psalmist MAKES A VOW (A PROMISE), a public announcement to commit himself before the Lord. Their VOWS,  both in the Old and New Testament, are serious and binding, and GOD NEVER FORGETS THEM!

"When you make a promise to God don't delay in following through......keep all your promises you make to Him." Ecclesiastes 5:4 (NIV)

"If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to keep it because He will require it of you, and it will be counted against you as a sin......Be careful to do whatever comes from your lips, because you have freely vowed what you have promised to the Lord your God."                                Deuteronomy 23:21&23 (CSB)

WHAT IS THE GREATEST VOW (PROMISE) YOU CAN MAKE TO THE LORD?

The greatest PROMISE you can make is to FOLLOW JESUS CHRIST and to BECOME HIS SERVANT. This is also the best PUBLIC DECLARATION you can make as a witness to others.

"O Lord, truly I am your servant , yes I am your servant, born into your household; you have freed from my chains." Psalm 116:16 (NLT)

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FREE FROM CHAINS?

One of the greatest hymns we know is "Amazing Grace". The modern version by Louie Giglio and Chris Tomlin has a chorus that goes like this:

"My chains are gone, I've been set free.
My God, my Saviour, has rescued me.
And like a flood, His mercy reigns,
                                      UNENDING LOVE, AMAZING GRACE!"

The Psalmis had an utter dependence on GOD'S GRACE and MERCY. Because he kept his vows and promises and was committed to serving the Lord, he found the highest JOY AND FREEDOM in following Him. He had his grief and sorrows, as we all do, that often kept him "bound in chains", but when we give our emotions to the Lord, and stand in His presence, "the chains are loosened" and WE ARE FREE.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST ENCOURAGEMENT IN THIS PSALM THAT WE CAN GIVE THOSE WHO HAVE LOST 'LOVED ONES'?

"The Lord cares deeply when His loved ones die." Psalm 116:15 (NLT)

This is the verse that has been most inspirational for me. Other Versions speaks of "LOVE ONES" as:

* "Precious and valuable in God's sight."
* "His faithful servants".
* "Ones that belong to God."

I believe we can truly lift others up with this knowledge. One of the blessings I have had in understanding my grief as Christ's servant, is that I can encourage others when they too are grieving:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the FATHER OF MERCIES and the GOD OF ALL COMFORT. He comforts us in all our afflictions, so that WE MAY BE ABLE TO COMFORT THOSE who are in any kind of affliction, through THE COMFORT WE OURSELVES RECEIVE FROM GOD." 2 Corinthians 1:3&4 (CSB)

"The Psalmist calls the death of a love one "precious and honourable in God's sight". No Christian passes through the workld into Heaven WITHOUT GOD NOTICING THEM. When they die, HE IS PRESENT AND HE CARES." Charles Swindoll

3. WE SHALL WORSHIP AND PRAISE THE LORD

"I will offer you a THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE, and call on the name of the Lord......in the presence of His people, in the courts of the Lord's house. HALLELUJAH."                                                                                                              Psalm 116:17 & 19 (NRSV)

"Worship must have both heart and head. It must engage emotions and thought. True worship comes from people who are deeply emotionally and who have STRONG EFFECTIONS FOR GOD. The Psalmist had tears, songs, a bowed head, lifted hands, confessions and longings - A FULL OBEDIENT, WORSHIPFUL LIFE." John Piper.

The Psalmist's journey from grief and sorrow to the HEIGHTS OF PRAISE didn't take place overnight. PRAISING GOD WAS THE PINNACLE OF HIS CLIMB. He didn't wait till he felt better before GIVING GOD HIS PRAISES.

Don't wait for your circumstances to changhe before you start PRAISING AND WORSHIPPING. Claim God's future promises NOW! Make PRAISE and THANKSGIVING a daily part of your prayers and make plans to join others in WORSHIP.

The Law of Moses outlined how God's people - the Israelites - were to approach their worship. They were to bring their "THANKSGIVING OFFERINGS" and "CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD". This is what the Psalmist would do in his public worship in the Temple, bringing glory ("Hallelujahs") to the Lord.

"Now this is the Law of the Fellowship Sacrifice that someone may present to the Lord: if He present it for THANKSGIVING, in addition to the THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE, he is to present unleavened cakes mixed with olive oil, unleavened wafers coated with oil, and well kneaded cakes of fine flour mixed with oil. He is to present as his offering cakes of leavened bread with his THANKSGIVING SACRIFICE OF FELLOWSHIP." Leviticus 7:11-13(CSB)

This Psalm a Hallelujah (Praise the Lord) exclamation! This is what God's people are to do everywhere.

"The FUEL OF WORSHIP and the truth of God is REVERENCE, GRATITUDE AND JOY. But we still need to LIGHT THE FIRE to produce the HEART OF WORSHIP - we need the Holy Spirit to ignite us." John Piper
