PSALM 139: The Attributes of our Father God

INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 139

I have been reading and studying the Psalms for a number of years now, learning from David and other authors, about the ATTRIBUTES OF GOD; but Psalm 139 - David's song -  would have to be my favourite.

There have been times in my life when I have felt LONELY and INSIGNIFICANT, particularly in times of loss and anxiety. The past few nights I have woken with thoughts of my past sisters, Mary and Miriam. They died many years ago, but not unlike many people who suffer grief and depression, there are still times, like David,  I ask these questions:

1. How well do I know God?

2. How close is God to me?

3. How carefully has he made me?

4. How will God help and protect me?

A lot of us still struggle with "insignificance", but in this Psalm, David helps us see God as 'REAL AND PERSONAL". Why? Because that is who He is? He is alive,  and interested in every part of our lives.

"I hope you find it comforting, as I have, to know that GOD KNOWS, UNDERSTANDS and CARES FOR YOU. GOD IS EVERYWHERE and we never need to feel isolated from Him. It is also true that GOD LOVES YOU, and along with HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST, he is REACHABLE, KNOWABLE, AVAILABLE AND REAL." Charles Swindoll

OUR OMNISCIENT GOD - Read 139:1-6, Romans 8:27-39

This is the doctrine of OMNISCIENCE! God not only knows about every detail of our lives, but He knows what we think. The first verses in this Psalm of David's tell us that no one but God, KNOWS ALL ABOUT US. We are the "object of our living God's total attention" and because of this, we know that HE LOVES AND CARES ABOUT US.

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, nor anything in all creation will be able to separate us from the LOVE OF GOD that is in Christ Jesus, our Lord." Romans 838&39 (NIV)

1. OUR ALL KNOWING GOD

David says that "GOD SEARCHES HIM" - He know our thoughts even before they "come into our brains". There may be times we struggle with anxious thoughts - "an identity crisis" - but God never does! He always encourages us with compassion and love.

God knows the "WORDS THAT ARE ON OUR TONGUES", even before we speak them. This should effect the quality of our speech!  Nothing is hidden from our "ALL KNOWING" OMNISCIENT GOD.

"Before a word is on our tongue, you Lord, KNOW IT COMPLETELY." Psalm 139:4 (NASB)

"God knows what PROMPTS us to think certain things. Therefore, HE UNDERSTANDS the hidden, unspoken motives behind our actions." Charles Swindoll

2. OUR OMNIPOTENT GOD

"You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, to lofty for me to attain." Psalm 136:5&6 (NIV)

As David's song continues, we learn of another attribute of God - His Omnipotence - His ability to "remain in complete control of His universe."  When things go wrong we may ask this question: IS GOD REALLY IN CONTROL? There may be nothing we can do about our situation, but we are reminded of GOD'S OMNIPOTENCE, and "nothing occurs unless it is in HIS SOVEREIGN WILL"

The Lord is in control of "the smallest detail" of our lives. Knowing us as he does, He puts the "necessary controls" upon us:

* He encloses us ('hems us in')
* He puts His hand on us ('his right hand').

How do we feel about "the boundaries" God keeps around us. For me I feel compassion and strength. God's "restrictions" also give us "freedom", for we know that God's will and purposes are for "the good of those who love Him".

"And HE WHO SEARCHES OUR HEARTS, knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the WILL OF GOD. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, having been called ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE." Romans 8: 27&28 (NIV)

"Because GOD SEES ALL and KNOWS ALL, we can trust where HE TAKES US. David realized that God not only KNEW about his every THOUGHT AND MOVEMENT, but that He truly CARED FOR HIM." Ruth Chou Simmons

OUR OMNIPRESENT FATHER:   Read Psalm 139:7-12;      Jonah 1-2

God's Omniscience and Omnipotence are very important, but even greater than these attributes would have to be HIS OMNIPRESENCE.

"God is always everywhere at the same time. This gives us assurance that we are never out of HIS PRESENCE, in every moment of our lives. No matter where we are, GOD IS WITH US, and will NEVER LEAVE US." Ruth Chou Simmons

1. WHERE IS GOD?

"Where can I go from YOUR SPIRIT? Where can I flee from YOUR PRESENCE? If I ascend to Heaven, YOU ARE THERE; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, YOU ARE THERE. If I take the wings of the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea; EVEN THERE your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me." Psalm 139:7-10 (NASB)

These next verses remind us that GOD IS WITH US EVERYWHERE. David asks two questions:

*"Where can I go from YOUR SPIRIT"?
*"Where can I flee from YOUR PRESENCE?"

God will never leave us LONELY, but we can always "be at ease in His presence". David used many examples to describe GOD'S PRESENCE. He uses two important phrases to describe these:

* "YOU ARE THERE".
* " EVEN THERE"

Both in good times and in bad, we can take to hearted these BLESSED WORDS. Like David and Jonah, we can "reach out" and thank the Lord for His mercy and grace in HIS PRESENCE.

"Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the inside of the fish. . He said: "In my distress I called to the Lord,  and He answered me. From deep in Sheol (the realm of the dead) I cried for help, and you listened to my cry. You hurled me into the depths (the very heart) of the sea, and the currents swirled (engulfed) over me, your waves and breakers (billows)  swept over me ..........What I have vowed, I will make good. I will say, "SALVATION COMES FOR THE LORD". And the Lord commanded the fish and it vomited Jonah up on dry land." Jonah 1:1-3, 9&10 (NASB/NIV)

Just like David and Jonah, we can be assured of "GOD'S SALVATION" - "HIS RIGHT HAND HOLDING US UP". There is no fleeing from the Lord. Even His Son, Jesus Christ, will never let us down.

"You cannot escape GOD'S PRESENCE. HE IS EVVERYWHERE. God's gentle hand is pressing on us. Thank you Lord for His promise: Your right hand holds us fast. Lead us in YOUR PRESENCE and draw us CLOSE TO YOU." Nicky Gumbel

2. DARKNESS AND LIGHT

"Surely the DARKNESS will overwhelm me and the LIGHT around me will be night. Even the DARKNESS is not night to You, and the night is as BRIGHT AS THE DAY. DARKNESS AND LIGHT are as alike to You." Psalm 139:11&12 (NASB)

David's song continues with the "magnificence of God's nearness". He guides us through the "unique difficulties" we face. We grow as we walk through the "darkness and light". GOD'S PRESENCE is a "constant light in the darkness".

It is encouragement that in both the night and the day we will neve be lonely, for we will "never escape the Lord's notice" for there is no one who is "hidden from Him". It is most comforting to know HE CARES!

GOD - OUR CREATOR - Read Psalm 139:13-18

How carefully God is watching over our lives. David declared that a God who KNOWS US and is NEAR US can be "intimately in touch with us" as OUR CREATOR. David's song continues with a "celebration of human life." We are a combination of "wonder, beauty, grace and balance". How precious are the humans that GOD CREATED.

1. IN OUR MOTHER'S WOMB

"For you CREATED my inmost being; YOU KNIT ME TOGETHER IN MY MOTHERS WOMB.....My frame was hidden from You when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the sea. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:13, 15-16 (NIV)

It started in our "MOTHER'S WOMB" - God watching as we were being formed. but even more so he planned our every day life. Like David our lives were "recorded in God's book of life.".

"David acknowledged that GOD WAS HIS CREATOR and author of his life. He realized that the dayys of His life were written in  GOD'S BOOK. The same is true for us." Max Lucado

"You brought me out of the womb; and you made me TRUST even at my Mother's breast. From birth I WAS CAST ON YOU; from my Mother's womb YOU HAVE BEEN MY GOD."                                                                                                           Psalm 22:19&10 (NIV)

2. OUR UNIQUENESS

"I praise you because I am FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

Thank you Lord for designing us in such a unique fashion, so "fearfully and wonderfully made." You put us together with unique bodies and personalities. He continues to care for us as we GROW. David was a remarkable man - "a shepherd, a soldier, a poet and a king". Like David, we know that "our bodies are stunning in their design". We know far more about David did about CREATION, and this should make us full of AWE and PRAISE.

"So GOD CREATED MANKIND in His own image, in the image of God HE CREATED THEM, male and female, HE CREATED THEM." Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

3. OUR FUTURE

"How precious to me are Your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them. Were I to count them, the would outnumber the grains of the sand - when I awake I am still with you."                                                                                                     Psalm 139:17&18 (NIV)

David finishes off this passage with a statement of GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY. David also thought about HIS FUTURE. If God had thought so much about his birth, designing his body,  what great thought He would have put into His plans and purposes for his future - his everyday life. How is your life at the moment? How has God shaped and guided you for YOUR FUTURE?

"The stages of our life are spread out before Him. HE PREPARES ALL OUR DAYS and gives greatb attention to our FUTURE"  Charles Swindoll'

"But the PLANS OF THE LORD stand firm forever, the PURPOSES OF HIS HEART through all generations." Psalm 33:11 (NIV)

David was filled with amazement and adoration:

* Because of God's precious thoughts.
* During the day he felt God's wonderful presence.

Like David, I love to wake up in the morning to spend time in PRAYER and BIBLE STUDY. Sometimes I may have a difficult, DARK  night, but I always awake IN THE LIGHT, knowing that I always have the Lord by my side. David knew that HIS SOVEREIGN LORD's thought and presence were with him day, and we too, as God's children,  can be assured of this,

"It is a blessing to wake up each day, knowing that the LORD IS WITH YOU, both in his thoughts and presence." Nicky Gumbel

OUR LORD - OUR HELPER AND PROTECTOR -               Read Psalm 139: 19- 22, Luke 6:27-36

"If only you, God, you would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! They speak with evil intent, your adversaries MISUSE YOUR NAME. Do I not HATE those who HATE YOU, O Lord, and abhor those who are IN REBELLION AGAINST YOU? I having nothing but HATRED FOR THEM; I count them as my enemies." Psalm 139:19-22

David grew angrier the more his enemies were DISLOYAL TO GOD. On "six seperate occasions", David refers to his enemies in "strongest terms". It was "righteous anger", because of their "ungodly behaviour", but he loathed them with deep emotion. David's love for God was so great and he couldn't bare the hatred his enemies showed against His Father God:

*Speaking against God with irreverence ("blasphemy").
*Taking the Name of the Lord in vain ("profanity").

"Spiritual compromise is a deadly problem. David trusted in God to HELP AND PROTECT HIM, and didn't want and didn't want to take matters into his own hands. He wanted to "align his values with God." Chuck Swindoll

David wanted to imitate God. As a "a man after His own heart". He wanted to leave the final decision in God's hands - a very "wise and Biblical action to take".

"Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF. I am the Lord." Leviticus 19:18

King David had been a skilled military leader - a "man of war" . He had established Jerusalem as a place of power, but he didn't want to take "matters into his own hands",  abusing God's love, with "hate in his heart". Later we see that Jesus had a "unique perspective" on how we should engage our enemies - those we have 'HATE' towards.

"DO TO OTHERS what you would have them DO TO YOU." Luke 6: 31 (NIV)

"BE MERCIFUL, as your HEAVENLY FATHER IS MERCIFUL." Luke 6:36

CONCLUSION: LIFE EVERLASTING -                               Read Psalm 139:23&24

David sought the Lord, coming to Him in prayer. He was worried and anxious about his angry thoughts. David opened up his "humble soul", asking God to forgive his sinful thoughts and actions. He wanted to bring HOLINESS back into his life. David wanted God to lead him back into FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM, and to learn and grow deeper.

David finally states a desire to be led back into an "everlasting life", following the paths of righteousness. Do you want to be a person whose walks with God in and  "IMTIMATE AND DEEP relationship Becoming a godly person takes time, but if it truly what we want, we can reach out to God and His Son Jesus, and he will lead us on this way.

"This prayer requires a great deal of courage. Open up all the closets of your life - every room and every corner. Ask God examine all your motives and show you what needs attention. Don't take this lightly or let it frighten you." Charles Swindoll

Trust in the Lord - in his OMNISCIENSE, OMNIPOTENCE and OMNIPRESESENCE. Remember that HE IS YOUR CREATOR. He will LOVE AND CARE FOR YOU, HELPING AND PROTECTING you each step to a WAY EVERLASTING.

"For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten (one and only) Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have ETERNAL (EVERLASTING) LIFE."                                                                                                                           John 3:16 (NASB/NIV)

PSALM 138 - PRAISING THE LORD

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 138

GOD IS LOVING, FAITHFUL, MERCIFUL, OMNIPOTENT AND GRACIOUS. With these attributes, and many more, we can truly TRUST THE LORD to BE WITH US ALWAYS, and to ANSWER OUR PRAYERS.

" Then you will call on me and come and PRAY TO ME and I WILL LISTEN. You will SEEK ME AND FIND ME, when you SEEK ME WITH ALl YOUR HEART." Jeremiah 29:12&13 (NIV)

Through our difficult times in our lives - sickness, temptation, exhaustion - to name a few; we know that God will "PRESERVE US". David, the author of this Psalm, knows this PROMISE well. Although he had many trials, he always TRUSTED in His omnipotent Father. He didn't have "shelves of self help books", but when "weary and afflicted", he knew his faithful, reliable God would "never change" or let him down.

"God is our REFUGE AND STRENGTH, an EVER PRESENT HELP in times of trouble." Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

PRAISE OUR FAITHFUL  & LOVING GOD -                         Read Psalm 138: 1-3

David doesn't PRAISE with "empty adoration", his praise is full of FAITH and COMMITTMENT, through "meditation"

"May the words of my mouth and the MEDITATION of our heart, be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, MY STRENGTH and MY REDEEMER." Psalm 19:14  (NKJV)

So WHY and HOW did David do this?

1. WITH HIS WHOLE HEART.

"I will praise the Lord with ALL MY HEART." Psalm 138:1a (NLT)

"We need a broken heart to CONFESS OUR SINS and a WHOLE HEART to PRAISE THE LORDS PERFECTIONS." Charles Spurgeon

He begins with a "bold declaration" - seeking the Lord with a "whole heart" - reflecting on all God has done for him.

2. BEFORE THE GODS

"I will sing your praises BEFORE THE GODS." Psalm 138:1b (NLT)

"A witness against impotence of idols - PRAISING THE LORD and the LORD ALONE, not gods of different nations". David Guzik

Why did David do this? We know he wasn't worshipping idols, but maye:

* He wanted to "prove his alliance" with God, and GOD ALONE.

* The gods he was referring to were "judges and  kings".

3. BEFORE THE HOLY TEMPLES.

"I bow before the HOLY TEMPLE, as I WORSHIP." Psalm 138:2a (NLT)

"They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God's adopted children. God revealed His glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them His law. He gave them the privilege of WORSHIPPING HIM and receiving His wonderful promises." Romans 9:4 (NLT)

Even though David may not have been worshipping in the Temple (Tabernacle), as, at times, he was in a cave and in exile. He accepted that the TEMPLE was indeed to be the PLACE OF WORSHIP for himself and God's people.

4. BECAUSE OF GOD'S LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS.

"I praise Your Name, for Your UNFAILING LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS." Psalm 138:2b

"The Lord's LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS go hand in hand. Thank you for your amazing LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS towards us.." Nicky Gumbel

"GOD IS FAITHFUL and will never fail us." Ruth Chou Simmons

Like David, our FAITH AND HOPE in God and His Son Jesus, lead to an acknowledgement of HIS LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS. Even when we fall, God is our PROMISE KEEPER. He always ANSWERS OUR PRAYERS.

5. MAGNIFY GOD'S NAME AND GLORY.

"For His promises are backed by all the HONOUR YOUR NAME" Psalm 138:2c (NLT)

"Abraham never wavered in believing GOD'S PROMISES. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought GLORY TO GOD. He was fully convinced that God was able to do whatever HE PROMISED." Romans 4:20&21 (NLT)

GOD'S TRUTH is communicated to us by HIS WORD and shown through HIS GLORIOUS NAME. We too are encouraged to PRAISE AND WORSHIP the Lord, by HONOURING HIS NAME.

6. THE LORD ANSWERS HIS PRAYERS.

"As soon as I PRAY, YOU ANSWER ME;  you encourage me by giving me STRENGTH." Psalm 138:3 (NLT)

"The POWER OF PRAYER is the ONE WHO HEARS IT, not says it. Our prayers make a difference, as God hears them and will aide and COMFORT YOU." Max Lucado

The Lord rescued David many times when he called out to Him IN PRAYER. God always responds to us, especially when we are in a time of crisis. He gives us STRENGTH and develops our FAITH.

Thomas Nelson, the writer of the Hymn: "GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS", had to deal with many troubles in his life. His health was poor, causing him to resign from the Methodist Ministry. As an author and composer, he faced a number of rejections of his work, until this hymn was finally published. Although this hymn was not based on "specific circumstances", it came from His love for the Lord and His Word.

PRAISE OUR GREAT AND GLORIOUS GOD  -                      Read Psalm 138:4-6

"May all the kings of the earth PRAISE YOU, Lord, when they hear what you have, May they sing of the ways of the Lord, for the GLORY OF THE LORD IS GREAT. Though the LORD IS EXALTED, He looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty He sees them from afar." Psalm 138:4-6 (NIV)

In the next few verses of this Psalm, David gives His thanks and praise in the "presence of the earth's kings". There are 3 reasons David gives for why he feels the kings need to listen to join with him in HIS PRAISES of a GREAT AND GLORIOUS GOD.

1. THE KINGS HAVE HEARD GOD'S WORD and THEY KNOW HIS WAYS.

David was king of Israel and GAVE PRAISES to the Lord, but he wanted all the kings of the earth to PRAISE GOD too. They would praise Him because others would tell them of 'HIS WORKS AND HIS WAYS."

"Although the Psalmist does not reveal what God has said to have spoken, this likely refers back to Psalm 138:2 where God's Name and Word or PROMISES TO ISRAEL have been exalted." \
                                                                                    Vanessa Lovelace

2. THE 'GLORY OF GOD IS GREAT'

Israel thanked their God for many things, lot least HIS AWESOME AND MAJESTIC POWER, MIGHT AND STRENGTH. They praised the Lord for all the great things God had done, specifically their redemption. GOD IS GREAT AND HOLY and this is another reason we GLORIFY HIM IN WORSHIP.

"The kings of the earth would not only PRAISE YAHWEH (GOD) with words; but with song. This was their response to a GREAT & GLORIOUS GOD." David Guzik

3. OUR GREAT GOD "LOOKS KINDLY" ON THE HUMBLE AND LOWLY.

Although the Lord is exalted, He still CARES FOR THE HUMBLE, but he keeps the proud at a distance, "not keeping company with the arrogant".  David understood that God was great and glorious - our Sovereign Father - yet He still held the MEEK, HUMBLE AND LOWLY in high regard.

"Infinitely great as God is, He regards even the lowest and most inconsiderate parts of His creation; the humble and afflicted man attracts His notice in particular." Adam Clarke - cited by David Guzik.

"God opposes the proud, but gives GRACE to the humble." James 4:7/1 Peter 3:5 (NLT)

"So HUMBLE yourself under the mighty hand of God, and HE WILL LIFT YOU UP."                     1 Peter 3:6 (NIV)

These verses tell of our God's LOVE AND GRACE, as a OUR GREAT AND GLORIOUS Father, and these are true too of His Son Jesus.

PRAISE GOD WHO CARES AND PROTECTS US -

Read Psalm 138:7&8

Like David, we as Christians, desire to LOVE AND SERVE our Father God and His Son, Jesus. Still, there are times when we FEEL DOWN and LOST; times when we are surrounded by TROUBLES. We don't seem to "have it all together". We can admit that we are "buried and bruised".

"Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me. You will stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies. Your right hand will save me." Psalm 138:7 (NKJV)

"I know the Lord is always with me. I will be shaken but He is right beside me." Psalm 16:8 (NLT)

"God will never waste our pain, but will always use it for His glory." Ruth Chou Simmons

In our lives we may face many trials and temptations. In sickness we sometimes question the Lord, but because of his mercy and compassion, we know He will always "PRESERVE AND PROTECT US". If we lay down our pain and regrets, the Lord continues to SUSTAIN and to LIFT YOU UP. We may not understand when these bad thins happen to us, but we cab TRUST IN THE LORD, knowing that HE CARES FOR US. Then we can tell the world about HIS LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS.

"The Lord will work out the plans for our life - for Your love and faithfulness, O God, endures forever. "                                                                                                                    Nicky Gumbel

"Trust in the Lord with all your hearts, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your names acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5&6 (NIV)

"Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

CONCLUSION

One of my favourite Christian worship songs is: "GOD WILL MAKE A WAY". It was written by Don Moen, when he experienced a tragic event in his family. Embracing his brother and daughter in law, who had lost their children, Don encouraged them with these verses. It was dark time for them all, but Don still knew that God was still their 'GUIDE,  RESTORER and PROTECTOR' forever. "He works in ways that we may not understand", but HIS MERCY AND GRACE give us assurance, that "He will make a way, when there seems to be no way."

"God, you are RIGHTEOUS, HONOURABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY. You crush darkness and shatter despair. You heal people and restore relationships. You continually invite people to KNOW YOU PERSONALLY. You are GREAT AND MIGHTY, and WORTHY TO BE HONOURED."                                                                                                              You Version

"God's grace guides us each step of the way into His presence." Ruth Chou Simmons

Psalm 137 - MERCY IN CAPTIVITY

INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 137, Jeremiah 12, Ezra 1&2, Nehemiah 1:1-3

In times of trouble, it's easy to forget that God answers our prayers, but HE DOES, and reassures us of HIS LOVE AND MERCY. He will "carry us through our difficulties". Like the Israelites, in their captivity, we need to be honest with our GUILT, FEAR and GRIEVING. Remember, even in times of mourning, "GOD WILL HEAR YOU AND COMFORT YOU."

"I am leaving you with a gift - PEACE OF MIND AND HEART. And the PEACE I give you the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid." John 14:27  (NLT)

The Israelites had been exiled into Babylon, watching their homes  and the Temple in Jerusalem fall down around them. They had lost confidence in God's presence, and their "cry for lament" was heard all over the countryside. They were a DESPERATE, TORMENTED PEOPLE!

For centuries, the people of Judah had heard the prophecies - "the CONSEQUENCES for their IDOLATRY AND DISOBEDIENCE." Judah and Israel had experienced Civil War, which had ended with their "captivity into Babylon." God's people had failed to hear God's warnings and had been "stripped of their covenant blessings."  They could worship in the Temple, nor live in the Promised Land.

"No one can deny the relentless pain brought on by enduring the consequences of their wrong doing......The Lord always warns those He chastises." Charles R Swindoll

"Then after 70 years of captivity are over, I will punish the king of Babylon for their sins. I will make the country of Babylon a wasteland." Jeremiah 25:12 (NLT)

We later read in Scripture, how after their many years of captivity, Ezra and Nehemiah would lead the Israelites as they returned home to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls of their city and their Temple.  God's mercy and grace would abound.

"O Lord God of Heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps His Covenant of unfailing love with those who love  Him and obey your commands. LISTEN TO MY PRAYER! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family have sinned.....  but if we return and obey your commands and live by them, even if we are exiled to the ends of the earth, YOU WILL  US BACK TO THE PLACE YOU HAVE CHOSEN for Your name to be honoured." Nehemiah 1:5&6, 9 (NLT)

"GOD'S GRACE AND MERCY hold us every step of our journey, as we return to HIS PRESENCE."  Ruth Chou Simmons

THE EXILES SONG - PRAYING FOR MERCY -                     Read Psalm 137:1-4

Imagine the Jews with their "heads hanging low" and their "shoulders slumped", silently sitting with the "tears streaming down their cheeks". Psalm 137 was written shortly after their exile into Babylon. Imagine or hurt and lonely they would have been feeling, away from the GOD'S PRESENCE.

"Besides the Rivers of Babylon, we sat and wept as we thoughts of Jerusalem.....Our captors demanded a song from us. One tormentor insisted on a joyful hymn: "Sing us one of those songs of Jerusalem!" But how can we sing those songs for the Lord in a pagan land?" Psalm 137:1, 3&4

The Psalmist himself was an exile. Why then would they have been weeping?

* Because of the death of their LOVE ONES.

* Over the loss of EVERYTHING THEY OWNED.

* Their city and homes had been DESTROYED, along with their Temple, in which they WORSHIPPED GOD in His Presence.

* Because they were being TREATED CRUELY by their captors.

* They felt they had a BLEAK FUTURE - too many UNKNOWNS.

* They were feeling GUILTY because of the CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR SIN and their FEAR OF JUDGEMENT.

The words in the song were sad and mournful, not just a "PERFORMANCE". They were singing them in a FOREIGN LAND. Because of their fear and guilt they had forgotten GOD'S LOVE AND MERCY.

Because of GOD'S MERCY AND GRACE, you can have "surefooting, confidence and trust" with "access to GOD'S PRESENCE. " This is what the Christian life "originates from".

DEVOTION TO GOD - HIS TENDER MERCIES                     - Read Psalm 13:5&6

"If I forget you Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. May my tongue cling to the roof if nt mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy."
                                                                                        Psalm 137:5&6 (NIV)

The Psalmist vowed to never forget GOD'S HOLY CITY - JERUSALEM. Notice that in these verses, the personal pronouns,, "we and our" are replaced with "my and I". After related the anguish of the Jewish people in the first four verses, the Psalmist is now doing some "self analysis". Although still feeling their grief and guilt, he refuses to "GIVE UP". He wanted to accept that God was loving, merciful and faithful - and HIS PROMISES WERE TRUE.

Today, we too often suffer the consequences of disobeying our Father God; but if we turn our hearts to Him, believing in His Son Jesus Christ, nothing can "break our bond" with Them. Let's not forget God's GRACE AND MERCY.

"Our merciful God has extended the way out, through GRACE. Receive His extravagant LOVE FOR YOU; HIS MERCY is always greater than your sin.....The more we set our hearts on the MERCY AND KINDNESS OF GOD the more can't help but OFFER OURSELVES BACK TO HIM, in GRATEFUL PRAISE." Ruth Chou Simmons

"Nothing that has OCCURED, or WILL OCCUR in Heaven or earth can change the TENDER MERCIES of our God." A.W Tozer

GOD'S JUSTICE - A PLEA FOR MERCY - Read Psalm 137:7-9, Obadiah 1

The Edomites joined with the Babylonians, destroying Jerusalem and taking the Jews into exile. They were a sister nation to Israel, and they should have been "sympathetic" to them, yet they "enjoyed watching the destruction of God's people".

"Descendants from Esau were closely related to the Israelites, but hostility had divided them. The Edomites gloated at the news of Jerusalem's ruin." Pat and David Alexander

"Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell. "Tear it down", they cried, "Tear it down to its foundations." Psalm 137:7 (NIV)

"The vision of Obadiah: This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom......."See I will make you small among the nations; you will be utterly despised. Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame forever." Obadiah 1&10 (NIV)

The Psalmist was seeking justice and retribution on behalf of God's people, for the all the Babylonians and Edomites had done to them, but it was not "self justification". In the future the Babylonians and the Edomites would be in ruins. GOD'S JUSTICE AND MERCY would prevail, and the Israelites would RETURN TO THEIR HOMELAND and rebuild it.

"But when the 70 years are fulfilled, I will punish the King of Babylon, for their guilt", declares the Lord, "I will make them desolate forever. "......"They themselves will be enslaved by many nations and great kings; I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands."                                                                                                            Jeremiah 25:12&14 (NLT)

"O Babylon, you will be destroyed. Happy is the one who repays you, according to what you have done for us." Psalm 137:8 (NIV)

"For I know the plans I have for you", says the Lord, "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope"...... "I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and I will bring you home again to your land."
                                                                         Jeremiah 29:11&14 (NLT)

CONCLUSION - MERCY FOR OUR                                                                                    PRESENT AND FUTURE.

By the end of this Psalm, the Psalmist moves on from sorrow to focus on God's faithfulness and mercy. God's compassion is the deep love that God has shown to those who are in misery and distress, like the people of Israel who had been in exile. MERCY AND LOVE is freely given to us too, even though we may feel unworthy or undeserving. His MERCY AND LOVE are "new every morning"  they "never end" and "GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS."

PSALM 136 - GOD'S LOVE ENDURES FOREVER

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 136, Romans 8:38&39

It isn't difficult to guess what the title of this Psalm is: "LOVE (MERCY) ENDURES FOREVER". This phrase is repeated 26 times in this Psalm, and, as the previous Psalm 135 told us, we know that  GOD'S LOVE and COMPASSION are an of "expression of  His GOODNESS".

"Mercy" is translated in Hebrew as "hessed", which may be understood as the Lord's grace,  His faithful love and kindness. In this Psalm God is also given 3 names: "Jehovah (grace)", "Elohim (might)" and "Adonai (Sovereign). " The rest of this Psalm, like its predecessor, remind us of God's many "miraculous wonders", and again, an expression of His LOVE AND MERCY.

"You are LOVED. Nothing can get in the way of GOD'S LOVE FOR YOU...... GOD'S LOVE IS LIMITLESS, and no one can stop it. GOD'S LOVE IS PERFECT AND STEADFAST..... in HARMONY WITH HIS HOLINESS, JUSTICE AND OMNIPOTENCE, and all His other attributes."
                                                                                  Ruth Chou Simmons

This Psalm is a rhetorical song, and we can can see a multitude of God's people, gathering in the Temple Courts. The Priest or Levite would call out the reason for their thanks and praise, and the people would respond:  "HIS MERCY (LOVE) ENDURES FOREVER."

"And when He had consulted with the people, He appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise His beauty of holiness, and they went out before the Army and were saying: "Praise the Lord, His mercy endures forever" " 2 Chronicles 20:21 (NKJV)

THANKSGIVING - Psalm 136:1-3; Psalm 100:4&5

"O GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD FOR HE IS GOOD! HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER! Give thanks to the God of gods! His mercy endures forever. O give thanks to the Lord of Lords! His mercy endures forever." Psalm 136:1-3 (NKJV)

God is our TRUE GOD and again we are reminded that He deserves OUR THANKS AND PRAISE. His LOVE AND MERCY are what we also need to be reminded of. Like the Israelites we need to be "GRATEFUL" for all God's blessings He has given us and we need to sing this Psalm, "HIS MERCY (LOVE) ENDURES FOREVER".

"LORD, WE NEED TO THANK YOU, FOR YOUR LOVE AND MERCY." Nicky Gumbel

WHY DO WE THANK THE LORD?

* Because HE LOVES US!
* He is the ONE GOD!
* His GOODNESS, LOVE AND MERCY ENDURE FOREVER!
* HE CARES FOR US!

"How do we respond to HIS WONDROUS LOVE? We start here: the more we set our hearts on the MERCY AND KINDNESS OF GOD, the more we can's offer our lives back to Him with GRATEFUL PRAISE." Ruth Chou Simmons

"Enter His gates with THANKSGIVIG and His courts with PRAISE, and GIVE THANKS TO HIM and PRAISE HIS NAME. For the Lord is good and HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER, His faithfulness continues through all generations" Psalm 100:4&5 (NIV)

GOD'S LOVE SHOWN IN HIS CREATION -                      Psalm 136:4-9, Genesis 1

"To Him alone does great wonders, for His mercy endures forever; To Him who by His wisdom MADE THE HEAVENS, for His mercy endures forever; to Him who LAID THE EARTH ABOVE THE WATERS, for His mercy endures forever, WHO MADE THE GREAT LIGHTS - the sun to govern the day and the moon and stars to govern the night, His love endures forever."                                                                                                       Psalm 136:4-9 (NKJ/NIV)

"By wisdom the Lord laid His foundation, by understanding He set the Heavens in place. By His knowledge the watery depths were divided and the clouds let drop the dew."                                                                                                              Proverbs 3:19&20 (NKJV)

GOD'S CREATION is a great demonstration of HIS LOVE AND MERCY. Back in Genesis we read of the CREATION STORY and how God made everything with His people in mind. He also made His people, so they could take care of His creation.

"In the beginning God CREATED the Heavens and the earth...And God said, "Let there be LIGHT and there was LIGHT.  God saw that it was good and He separated the LIGHT from the darkness.....God CREATED MANKIND in His own image, male and female HE CREATED THEM." Genesis 1:1, 3&4, 27 (NIV)

"Know that the LORD IS GOD. It is He who MADE US, and we are His; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture." Psalm 100:2 (NIV)

"The description of GOD'S WORK IN CREATION and in history, alternate with HIS TIMELESS LOVE." Pat & David Alexander

"People cannot put a limit on GOD'S PATIENT CARE. HE CREATED EVERY DETAIL OF THE UNIVERSE, and patiently provided for HIS PEOPLE." Max Lucado

GOD'S LOVE SHOWN IN HISTORY - Read 136:6-10;     Exodus 11-15; Joshua 1-6.

"To Him who struck down the first born of Egypt, HIS LOVE ENNDURES FOREVER; He brought Israel out by His might hand and outstretched arm, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER..... He who led His people through the wilderness, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER.....He who struck down great kings and killed mighty kings, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER, and He gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to His servant Israel, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER." Psalm 136:10-12, 16-18, 21-22. (NKJV)

Psalm 136 is a repetition of it's previous Psalm 135, when the Psalmist spoke of the Israelites deliverance from Egypt  and His provision in the wilderness. God still PROVIDES FOR US today - guidance, physical needs, healing and victory. God also demonstrated HIS LOVE AND MERCY " by striking down the kings of other nations".

"Moses answered the people: "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the DELIVERANCE the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you and you need only TO BE STILL." Exodus 14:13&14

"The Lord did to the Jordan what He has done to the Red Sea, until He dried it up before us and we crossed over. He did that so that all the people of the earth might know that the HAND OF THE LORD IS POWERFUL  and so that you might always fear the Lord your God."                          Joshua 4:23&24 (NIV)

We now, not only have A SAVIOUR IN JESUS CHRIST, but we have an advocate and healer in the HOLY SPIRIT. Our Father God asks us to praise Him, not only because He is our PROVIDER, but OUR REDEEMER.

"The God of the HISTORY in this Psalm is very important. As in countless other places in Scripture, God uses HIS WORK IN THE PAST to give us HOPE, FAITH AND CONFIDENCE - for this moment and the future." David Guzik

JESUS OUR REDEEMER -  Read Psalm 136:23-25

"He remembered us in low estate, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER; and freed us from our enemies, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER." Psalm 136:23&25 (NKJV)

Jesus shows HIS LOVE AND MERCY everyday of our lives. His most important attribute is SELF SACRIFICE - when He DIED ON THE CROSS FOR US.  As our REDEEMER, we need to have a  LOVE RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS, as His Father God. Their love is LIMITLESS AND UNENDING. It is perfect harmony with their GOODNESS, LOVE AND MERCY.

"For God so loved the world, He sent His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him, should not perish, but will have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son in the world to condemn the world, but that the world, through Him, might be saved." John 3:16&17 (NKJV)

As for our PROVIDER we can always trust in GOD'S FAITHFULNESS, in keeping His promises to His people. Because of HIS LOVINGKINDNESS and GRACE,  like His Son Jesus we will be able to BLESS AND HELP others.

"Because of the LORD'S GREAT LOVE we are not consumed, for HIS COMPASSION will never fail. They are new every morning. GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS."                                                                                                             Lamentations  3:23&24 (NIV)

CONCLUSION - Psalm 36:26

Charles Spurgeon reminds us that nothing can end GOD'S LOVE AND MERCY:

* Nothing in the PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE.
* No STORMS OF LIFE.
* The DISTANCE OF LOVE ONES.
* DEATH itself.

GOD'S LOVE and GRACE  should help us:

*To be MERCIFUL TO OTHERS.
*To be MORE HOPEFUL FOR OTHERS.
* Have MORE HOPE FOR OURSELVES.

"Give thanks to the God of Heaven, HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER." Psalm 139:26 (NIV)

PSALM 135: Our God is Great

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 135

Psalm 135 begins and ends with PRAISE! It tells us that we are to "passionately" praise and worship the Lord for many "logical reasons". But our praise is not to be based on our emotions only. This Psalm is based on a number of Old Testament passagfes and it reminds us of the many attributes of our Father God: HIS LOVE, FAITHFULNESS, GOODNESS AND MERCY - to name a few.

GOD HAS NO EQUAL! No one comes close when it comes to HIS GREATNESS. As you pray to Him todayt, give your PRAISE AND WORSHIP as you "exalt in His presence". Keep lifting His Name high - the NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES.

"Your name endures forever. You are renown above all generations." Psalm 135:13 (NIV)

"For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise. He is to be feared above all gods."
1 Chronicles 16:25 (NIV)

GOD'S HOLINESS is something we cannot comprehend. We are reminded of how much he forgave Jacob and His people. The Israelites had fallen away from Him to worship other gods. Through His Son Jesus' death and resurrection, we too MERCY AND GRACE,

"GRACE is God's greatest gift to us! He would treat us according to HIS HEART, not ours. He would relentlessly attach Himself with HIS LOVE. Then He would swing the door of Heaven open to anyone who would TRUST HIM." Max Lucado

PRAISE AND WORSHIP - Read Psalm 135:1-4;               Deuteronomy 7:1-10; Hebrews 9

"Praise the Lord! Praise the Name of the Lord! Praise Him, all ye servants of the Lord, who minister in the House of the Lord, in courts of the House of the Lord." Psalm 135:1&2 (NIV)

When we are worshipping and praising the Lord, we are putting aside ourselves and concentrating on the GLORY OF GOD. WORSHIP is "giving attention to honour" of our Lord, not just idols. All God's people should have a HEART OF PRAISE. not just the Worship Leaders.

1. PRAISE THE NAME OF THE LORD

True worship  is praising and honouring the Name of the Lord, and all His characteristics. In the Old Covenant there were rules for worshop - including sacrifices. But now in the New Covenant, we have more freedom. Jesus spoke of this "true worship" and how His followers needed to worship "in Spirit and in Truth".

"But the time is coming, indeed it is here now where TRUE WORSHIPPERS will worship the Father in SPIRIT and in TRUTH. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way. For GOD IS SPIRIT, so those who WORSHIP HIM must WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH."     John 4:23&24 (NLT)

2) PRAISE HIM ALL YE SERVANTS OF THE LORD

As in the previous Psalm 134:1&2, this verse talks about the Priests and the Levites who would do their duties in the temple, both day and night. We too as Christ's servants need to worship and praise our Father God, both in and out pf the Church.

"O PRAISE THE LORD, all ye servants of the Lord, who serve (minister)  in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and PRAISE THE LORD." Psalm 135:1&2 (NIV)

3) IN THE COURTS OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

Only the Priests and Levites could enter into God's sanctuary in the Temple; but the people of Israel could stand "outside in the "courtyard". God is calling us, also as God's children to be praising Him outside the "temple courts". We can "enter" His presence as we PRAY and WORSHIP.

"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee Your PRESENCE? If I go up into the Heavens, YOU ARE THERE; if I make my bed in the depths, YOUr ARE THERE. If I rise on the wings of the the dawn, if I settle in the far side of the sea , even there YOUR HAND WILL GUIDE ME, YOUR RIGHT HAND WILL HOLD ME FAST." Psalm 139:7-10 (NLT)

WHY DO WE PRAISE AND WORSHIP?

1) BECAUSE THE LORD IS GOOD.

I have always experience the GOODNESS OF GOD in my life. He has always been ON MY SIDE even when I have felt that everythiung is against me. I have always TRUSTED IN HIM and have celebrated MY HOPE FOR THE FUTURE.

"Examine and see how GOOD the Lord is. Happy is the person who TRUSTS HIM."
                                                                                               Psalm 34:8 (NCV)

2) IT IS PLEASANT

This doesn't mean we should worship for "self gratification", but there is nothing wrong with enjoying your praises.

"True praise is PLEASANT - an angelic exercise, and to the spiritually minded person - VERY DELICIOUS." John Trapp - cited by David Guzik.

"God needs to be the CENTRE OF OUR WORSHIP. And when WORSHIP is at its best, we will have JOY AND PASSION in our singing." C.S Lewis

3. THE LORD HAS CHOSEN US

The Lord "chose Jacob" to be the father of His nation. Jacob was one of the "patriarchs". He is mentioned in the Bible, along with Abraham and his father Isacc. But he seemed "out of place" with these others. Was it because of his nickname - "the heel" and "deceiver". Or was it because he "walked with a limp". Whatever the reason, Jacob's story is for "limpers" alike - the Isaelies and you and me - "the least", who needed God's grace and mercy.

"GOD'S GRACE isn't only as good as you are, but AS GOOD AS GOD IS. It didn't jus happen a long time ago, but it is for US, TODAY. GOD'S GRACE DOES NOT QUIT!" Max Lucado

"Know therefore, that the Lord your God, IS GOD. He is a FAITHFUL GOD, keeing His covenant of LOVE to a thousand generations of those who LOVE HIM and KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS." Deuteronomy 7:9 (NIV)

OUR GREAT GOD - CREATOR, REDEEMER and JUDGE -  Read Psalm 135:5-14; Numbers 21:21-35; Deuteronomy 3:1-11; Hebrews 8&9

In this passage we see God as both YAHWEH and ADONAI. He is the "covenant God" with the superior, ultimate power. He is our SOVEREIGN and OMNIPOTENT GOD. We know that He is in charge of all natural disasters and their timing.

In this Season, we have had storms that have caused damage to our homes. The wind has been really strong, causing Cyclones and Tornadoes. The rain has caused floods, but even though we may feel anxious about what has happened in our lives, we can still TRUST THE LORD to take care of us, as HE IS IN CONTROL.

"I know that the LORD IS GREAT, greater than all the other gods. The Lord does whatever PLEASES HIM in the Heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all its depths. He causes the cloud to rise over all the earth. He sends lightning and rain, and releases the wind from its storehouses." Psalm 135:5-7 (NLT)

"God is a GREAT CREATOR and has power over all other gods." Max Lucado

GOD - OUR REDEEMER

"He gave the land as a gift to His people, the Israelites. Your Name, O Lord, endures forever. You are renown Lord through all generations." Psalm 135:12:13 (NIV)

"But as for me, I know that my REDEEMER lives, and He will stand upon the earth at last."        Job 19:25 (NLT)

"In faithfulness", God took care of the Israelites,  by REDEEMING THEM from Egypt, and the kings from the "east of the Jordan River" and then "West into Canaan". God kept His promises - His Covenant - to His people, the Israelites; and He keeps His promises to all generations.

""Canaan was their heritage because they were the Lord's heritage. He actually gave it to them  because He had long before made this PROMISE to them." Charles Spurgeon

The New Covenant is an even greater REDEMPTION, and God sent His Son Jesus, to intercede for us. In Hebrew we read about another "High Priest" who gave His life for us so that we could have ETERNAL LIFE and the HOLY SPIRIT.

"But now, JESUS, THE HIGH PRIEST, has been given the ministry that is far more superior than the old Priesthood. He is the one who mediates for us as a FAR BETTER COVENANT with God, based on His promises.......When God speaks of the NEW COVENANT,  it means He has made the old one obselete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear.........So CHRIST has now become the HIGH PRIEST over all good things that have come. He entered the greater, more perfect tabernacle in Heaven......He entered the Most Holy Place, once and for all time and secured REDEMPTION for all time." Hebrews 8:6,13; 9:11&12 (NLT)

GOD - OUR JUDGE

"For He will give JUSTICE to all His people and have COMPASSION on His servants."                                                                                               Psalm 135:14 (NIV)

God's power "extends everywhere". He brings JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS - "vindicating" people and setting everything right, because of His MERCY AND COMPASSION. In this Psalm we have access to God's "righteous judgement", so this can also be a time of rejoicing - PRAISE & WORSHIP.

Christians today cry out to God for justice and mercy. Our God - "the define defender", RESCUES US, just as He did the Jews. The 'NEW COVENANT" is what we can "pin our hope on".

"For the ancient Jews, as ourselves today, justice was seen like that in an earthly court...... a civil case with ourselves as the plaintiff, We too are hoping for an acquittal - TO BE PARDONED."      C.S Lewis

God is both a God who judges with JUSTICE and MERCY.....Because of the sacrifice of His Son Jesus, it is possible to combine JUSTICE AND MERCY. In His justice, God judges because we are guilty. In mercy and love He sent His Son Jesus to pay the penalty for out sins. Because of this God is both JUSTICE AND MERCIFUL." Nick Gumbel

IDOLATRY  - Read Psalm 135:15-18

"The idols of the other nations are made of silver and gold, the work of human hands.......People who make idols will be like them and so will those who TRUST in them." Psalm 135:15&18 (NCV)

"People who worship useless idols give up their LOYALTY to You." Job 2:8 (NIV)

In Biblical times, as in many countries today, are no more than a "religious token". They seem "puny, empty and useless. But we, as Christians and Jews believe in the ONE TRUE GOD. Or do we? Our idols can have more of a secular, earthly nature. An idol can be used for anything but WORSHIPPING GOD, and is anything that takes our eyes OFF CHRIST.

"Do not love the world or the things of the world. If you love the world, the LOVE OF THE FATHER IS NOT IN YOU." 1 John 2:15 (NCV)

"God is at war for the LOVE OF OUR HEART. May your worship resist IDOLATYY." Jon Tyson

There are two kinds of idols:

* Those that take over OUR HEART.
* Those that are a CULTURAL/WORDLY nature.

HEART IDOLS

These idols take a "divine status", yet we continually "chase after them". Sometimes they take over our hearts, because we are seeking freedom. One of these in the need of approval.

I have been diagnosed with "Approval Syndrome" - the cause of my anxiety and depression. Recently, durimg our Christmas break from the Circus, I developed COVID . I felt guilty because I had been celebrating Christmas with Mum and Dad. Earlier in the month we staying with our family in Sydney - sin, daughter in law and grandchildren. And the end of our break, our family decided not to spend extra time with us. Understandably! My "Approval Syndrome" hit me like it hadn't done in years, and I really broke down. I felt the guilt and disaproval in my heart. Like Pastor and writer, Jon Tyson experienced: "The idol of approval was strangling the Spirit in my life."

"Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your heart."                                                                                                                1 John 5:21 (NCV)

CULTURAL IDOLS

Our world values many things: fashion, materialism and employment status, just to name a few. When we worship idols we usually "believe what they are telling us."

I have to confess, my work is often something I seem to put before God and my Bible Study. I try to "live in the world, but not of it", but I have to admit I often fall into temptation. I have lost my job many times, particilarly from Education Positions, when I have put my teaching first. I have a need to "prove myself" to Principals, parents and my children. I need to do my best! In the past, I have struggled, like others, to meet my need for "financial security".

Lately, I have become more "enlightened" by the Spirit and God's Word. I now need to have a "KINGDOM VISION" - worshippinp God should be my only hope. This "foundation" is found in Jesus Christ and His Father God, with our "hearts and heads in Heaven." The idols of this world can "deceive, distort and destroy us". If we discover a new passion, it effects everything we do. Sadly, idolatry happens again and again in the Bible, but the Scriptures are also about DOING RIGHT and OBEYING GOD.

"Seek first the Kingdom of God above all else. Live righteously and He will give you everything you need." Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

"And now brothers and sisters, one final thing: Fix your thoughts in what is TRUE, HONOURABLE and RIGHT, PURE, LOVELY AND ADMIRABLE. Think about things that are EXCELLENT and WORTHY OF PRAISE." Philippians 4:8 (NLT)

So how do we keep ourselves from worshipping idols in thei "modern day sector"? How do we keep from temptation?

* WE REPLACE one idol with another.
* WE DEVOTE our hearts and minds to God's Word,.
*WORSHIP GOD powerfully.
* SEEK GOD and be EMPOWERED BY HIS SPIRIT.

What is rhe IDOL that dominates your life? What are the hidden motives that "decieve and entice" you? It cam ne amything that takes your devotion from God and His Son Jesus. Take time this week to develop your relationship with God and Jesus Christ; and may your "worship resist idolatry."

"I am speaking to you who may have confiict in your soul and who God calls you to be. This is yime for us, as disciples, to show an urgency in OUR HEART for a beautiful resistance." Jon Tyson

CONCLUSION - PRAISE THE LORD - Read Psalm 135:19-21, Psalm 115

"All you Israelites, PRAISE THE LORD; House of Aaron, PRAISE THE LORD; House of Levi, PRAISE THE LOR; all who fear Him, PRAISE THE LORD." Psalm 135:19&20 (NIV)

Let us "set ourselves about" with WORSHIP AND PRAISE. In some Biblical translatio, they use the phrase, "BLESS THE LORD". We praise the Lord and bless Him by putting our TRUST IN GOD; and we give glory to Him.

"All you Israelites, TRUST IN THE LORD - He is your help anf shield. House of Aaron, TRUST IN THE LORD - He is your help and shield. You, who fear Him, TRUST IN THE LORD - He is your help and shield."  Psalm 115:9-11 (NIV)

In a series of statements the Psalmist concludes Psalm 135 with a call to "His descendents" to honour God and to GIVE HIM PRAISE, and the WORSHIP He deserves. Everyone who knew God were "called upon" to do this:

* THE ISRAELITES (the whole nation).
* THE HOUSES OF AARON and LEVI (the Priests and Levites who served in the Sanctuary).
*  ALL OTHERS WHO FEARED THE LORD (the Gentiles and Christians today).

"Praise be to the Lord, from Zion, to Him who dwells in Jerusalem. PRAISE THE LORD!"                                                                                                       Psalm 135:21 (NIV)

Jerusalem was, and is, a special place for Jews to worship. They praised and honoured Yahweh, specifically WHO HE WAS - "His greatness and goodness"; and still IS today, as they "extended out of Zion".

"PRAISE THE LORD! It is fitting for such a souring Psalm to end as it begun.  - declaring GOD'S PRAISE AND WORSHIP, and calling on others to do so." David Guzik
