PSALM 127 & 128 - THE GIFT OF PARENTHOOD

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalms 127 & 128, Proverbs 22:6

High on God's list of blessings are a HAPPY HOME - HONOURABLE PARENTS AND HAPPY CHILDREN. These Psalms were written by Solomon,  a king with great wisdom. Throughout Proverbs he gives us many sayings about the GIFT OF PARENTHOOD. In these Psalms 127 &128 , he continues with those words of wisdom, as we seek the Lord in "BUILDING OUR HOMES".

"Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older they will never leave it."
                                                                                   Proverbs 22:6 (NLT)

This Verse reminds us of the  " calling and responsibility" God has given us, AS  PARENTS. It is our responsibility to build the "foundation of faith" in our children. God doesn't expect us to do this "on our own" - He loves us and our children, "more than we ever could".

"It is never too late to start investing in the FAIITH OF YOUR CHILDREN. It is also never too early TO GET STARTED." Todd Dobberstein (You Version)

"If you allow GOD to be the HEAD OF YOUR HOME, he will bless your family life."
                                                                                                   Max Lucado

The problem we have often have in our marriages and as parents, is that we try to make our OWN PLANS. We forget that "GOD IS IN CHARGE." We believe that if we tried hard enough "our plans will be established". In this Psalm we are reminded that if we are to become a happy family, "GOD NEEDS TO MAKE OUR PLANS". APART FROM HIM, WE CAN DO NOTHING!

BUILDING OUR HOUSE AND FAMILY                                         Read Psalm 127:1-2,  119:9-12

1. THE LORD HIMSELF IS TO BE THE CENTRE OF OUR HOME

"Unless the LORD BUILDS THIS HOUSE, they labour in vain who build it." Psalm 127:1a (NASB)

Did you know that God is an ARCHITECT AND A BUILDER? He plans and builds our house and expects us to work with Him. "God's involvement is absolutely essential", for we as parents need to have a relationship with God and to share this with our children.

a) PRAY WITH AND FOR OUR CHILDREN, EVERYDAY!

To build a foundation of faith for our children, CONSISTENT PRAYER IS ESSENTIAL. The best way to show love and care for your family is to PRAY FOR THEM.

"There is nothing our kids need more than the presence of Christ in their lives. Therefore, the most important thing we can do as parents is to bathe our children in PRAYER. When you feel like you are running on empty, that's one of the best times to COME TO GOD IN PRAYER."
                                                                               Casey Case (You Version)

"Our oldest son will celebrate his 20th birthday soon. I asked him recently what it meant to him to know that we had prayed for him over the years. He said it helped him see the importance of HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. It showed him HOW MUCH WE CARED FOR HIS NEEDS, both physical and spiritual. Our prayers PROTECTED HIM from some of things he wasn't spiritually mature  to handle alone. " Rob & Joanna Teigan.

"Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that they may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)

b) READ GOD'S WORD WITH THEM

What I remember most about my father, in my early years, was how he read to us each night from the Bible and our "Children's Deotional Book". He brought me up to LOVE GOD'S WORD, and I endeavoured to share this love with my husband and son too. One of the most important things I have wanted to do for my son, his wife and our three grandaughters is to leave them a LEGACY - MY LOVE FOR THE WORD OF GOD and MY PERSEVERANCE IN PRAYER.

"The best way to make sure our children recognize God's voice is to teach them His Word. If you want to see them transformed by the power of God's Word, then they need to see it working in you - truly affecting the course of your life and your daily decisions........ At the same time, help your kids experience the Bible for themselves by learning to read and studying it, and listening to the Holy Spirit's leading, ON THEIR OWN. " Michael Martin (You Version)

"How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word." Psalm 119:9 (NLT)

c) DON'T PARENT ALONE

You need people in your life to help point your children in the right direction. Attend Church as a family. Serve in the Church as a family. Join a Small Group filled with people you can lean on through the difficult seasons of parenthood. It is important for you and your children to build FAITH BASED RELATIONSHIPS.

2. THE LORD HIMSELF IS TO BE THE CENTRE OF OUR LIFE AND WORK.

"It is no use if you GET UP EARLY and STAY UP LATE, working for a living. THE LORD GIVES SLEEP TO THOSE HE LOVES." Psalm 127:2

Please remember that the Lord is first in our lives. He will reward us even in our sleep. Godly lives need to include "REST AND RELAXATION". "Long hours and painful labour "in our life can never replace "our allegiance to God". Making money is not as important as the "PRESENCE OF GOD" in our lives.

"There remains therefore, A REST FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD. For he who has entered HIS REST, HE HIMSELF AS ALSO CEASED FROM HIS WORK, as God did from His.”
                                                                                            Hebrews 4:9&10 (NKJV)

KEEP YOUR LIVES FREE FROM THE LOVE OF MONEY, and BE SATISFIED WITH WHAT YOU HAVE God had said: “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5 (CEV)

"Believing in the Lord and marrying a believer is important if you want to establish your home with full STRENGTH AND STABILITY. Obedience to His commands and the principles iun Scripture, must become the DEFINING VALUES if we hope to build a STRONG FAMILY AND WORKLIFE."  Charles Swindoll

CHILDREN ARE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR HOME Read Psalm 127:3-5; Proverbs 4, 6:20&21, 23:22-26

King Solomon's wisdom continues with his "celebration of the strong home", with the focus on "our children."

"Children are a gift from the Lord; they a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth." Psalm 127:3&4 (NASB)

Notice these three "titles" Solomon tells us about our children:

1. THEY ARE A GIFT.

Children belong to the Lord and He graciously "shares them with His parents." Wise parents will acknowledge that their child is a "personal gift from God".

"The father of a good child is very happy; parents of wise children are glad because of them. Make your father and mother happy; give you The father of a good child is very happy; parents of wise children are glad because of them. Make your father and mother happy; give your r mother a reason to be glad."  Proverbs 23:4&5

PARENTING IS TOUGH - there is no doubt about that. But in those tough moments, God is always with us. Remember that the gift of parenting is a "noble and and worthy calling," a priviledge God has given us. "Embrace this fact that God has given you this honour."

2. THEY ARE A REWARD

A reward is something that is something God blesses us with. We receive a child in appreciation for our love for God and the "fruit of the womb" is a "token of God's love", for us as parents.

"Ask Him to RENEW YOUR JOY and THANK HIM for your children. If we learn to lean on God in the tough days of parenting, we can't help but be THANKFUL FOR OUR KIDS."

                                                                        Casey Case (You Version)

"Always be joyful! Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)

3. THEY ARE ARROWS

"Children who are born to you are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. Happy is a man who has a bag full of arrows. They will not be defeated when they fight their enemies at the city gate."                                                                                                                     Psalm 126:4&5 (NLT)

"A warrior doesn't stop to make his arrows. He uses them by directing them to a target. A parent is responsible too for the DIRECTION OF THEIR CHILDREN. A child, like an arrow, is incapable of directing themselves, particurly at a young age. It is the basic responsibility for the parentd to direct their children." Charles Swindoll

What happens when a child isn't given direction? They don't reach the TARGET OF GODLY LIVING, following the ways of Jesus Christ. Parents often feel bad when they discipline their children. It's definetely not fun to do, but children need "parenting authority". The more you LOVE YOUR CHILD the more they will ACCEPT THE DISCIPLINE. And, when you APPLY THE DISCIPLINE it needs TO BE IN LOVE. Too much love without discipline, can make your child 'SPOILT", but too much DISCIPLINE WITHOUT LOVE may "DAMAGE THEM EMOTIONALLY AND DRIVE THEM AWAY."

"Folly is bound in the heart His child, but th ROD OF DISCIPLINE will drive it far away."
                                                                                                             Proverbs 22:15 (NLT)

"The Lord disciplines those He loves, as the father the son he delights in." Proverbs 3:12 (NLT)

"It was June 2010 and my wife and eye were about to have our first baby. We were about to have dinner with my dad, and I decided to ask him for some parenting advice, some wisdom he had gained after many decades of parenting.  He thought for a minute and then me an analogue I will never forget: "Parenting is like a scale - on one side YOU HAVE LOVE and on the other DISCIPLINE. Applying either one two often, without the other, is harmful for your child."                                                                                                                  Brad Belyeu (You Version)

I found it really hard to discipline my child, until I read this verse and realized that DISCIPLINE is what makes you a LOVING AND CARING PARENT.

"Those who spare the rod of discipline, hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them." Proverbs 13:24 (NLT)

"My son, keep your father's command and do not forsake your mother's teaching."
                                                                                      Proverbs 6:29 (NIV)

"My children, listen when your father corrects you. Pay attention and learn good judgement."
                                                                                                              Proverbs 4:1 (NLT)

LEADERSHIP IN THE HOME -                                                   Psalm 128:1-3; Proverbs 18:22, 22:6

Solomon continues into this Psalm, with more WORDS OF WISDOM. Again, similar to what we read in his Proverbs. Having considered how important children are in our lives, we now see how important the PARENT'S LEADERSHIP ROLE is. We notice how important it is to our JOY AND HAPPINESS.

"Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways. When you shall eat from the fruit of your hands; YOU WILL BE HAPPY and it will be WELL WITH YOU." Psalm 128:1&2 (NASB)

"Parents who train their children accoordin to BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES have the hope of ULTIMATE HAPPINESS." Charles Swindoll

Parents enjoy all they do with their children, particularly when they share Scripture with them in the home. Around the table we see the wife "as a fruitful vine", and the children are not branches but "independent unique olive plants". The vine and the olive are symbols of "peace and plenty" - the fullness of God's blessings.

"The wife will be the FRUITFUL VINE within your house; your children will be like "olive shoots" around the table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord." Psalm 128:3-4

"When a man finds a wife, he finds something good. It shows that the Lord is pleased with him."
                                                                                               Proverbs 18:22 (NIV)

As parents we need to see our children as these "fruit" and bring them up in the ways of the Lord. We need to encourage them in their own personal talents and gifts, not forcing them to be images of their parents. Sometimes fathers want to force their "sporting abilities" on their sons or mothers like to urge an "artistic talent" in their daiughters. But these may not necessarily be "their interests".

Apart from a childs talent or ability we also need to "train our children" in the ways of the Lord. Find ways to encourage their DREAMS, but also direct them towards a FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS. Help them to read and study the Scriptures, so they can live out "these primciples" in their lives.

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."                                                                                                                   Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV)

                      INVEST IN YOUR CHILD'S FUTURE -                                              Read Psalm 128; Proverbs 17:6, 24.

"By WISDOM a house is built and through UNDERSTANDING it is established. Through KNOWLEDGE it rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." Psalm 24:3&4 (NIV)

Solomon helps us see the fruit of our labour in the home, including the joy we can have in the future with our grandchildren. We have:

1. PERSONAL PLEASURE

If you are determined to have Christ at the centre of your home and "parenthood grind", you will have God's Word as the "authority in rearing your children". You will have your "work cut out for you", and at times you may have negative, rather than positive consequences if you "relinquish" your parenting responsibilities.

"Behold, for this man shall be blessed who fears the Lord." Psalm 128:4 (NASB)

2. CIVIC BENEFITS

"May the Lord continually bless you from Zion. May you see Jerusalem prosper as lonmg as you live."  Psalm 128:5 (NLT)

Zion will be blessed and Jerusalem will be strong and prosperous. If you contribute to the home life of your chidren, you will receive benefits from your city and country governments.

3. OUR GRANDCHILDREN

"Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; parents are the pride of their children."                                                                                                             Proverbs 17:6 (NLT)

"May you live to enjoy your grandchildren. May Israel have peace." (NLT)

Because the Lord is the centre of your home you are able to look forward to blessings in your old age, not only with your children, but with your grandchildren. The most encouraging words from this verse is that we are helping out nation be PEACEFUL, not just today but in the future.

CONCLUSION - Read Psalm  127&128

A family may find themselves in difficult situations. The pressure may be mounting, particularly in the children's teenage years. Charles Swindoll tells us that the most difficult times he has had when councilling as a Pastor, have been with teenagers and their parents. The parents were either "too liberal or permissive" or in some cases, "too rigid". They needed to follow the Lord's guiding and model the ways of true parenthood.

"Is God the head of your house? Do you pray with and for your family daily? Do you read the Scriptures with them every night? God says, we will be blessed and happy if we seek God's wisdom during these teenage years. If the Lord is central in your home - His grip on your family will begin."

PSALM 126 - RETURNING FROM EXILE

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 126, Ezra 3, Nehemiah 9, Jeremiah 29.

Psalm 126 is often associated with the Israelites return from exile. They came back to Jerusalem to rebuild their city and their Temple. Many commentators believe it may have been written by either Ezra or Nehemiah, famous leaders and "prophets" in that time. This Psalm is still a part of the collection of the "Songs of Ascent" - a "prayer book" for the Pilgrims coming to Jerusalem for their "annual festivals".

It is a community song of TRUST AND CONFIDENCE in their Father God. He brings CELEBRATION - JOY AND LAUGHTER out of SORROW AND TEARS. It was also a song of THANKSGIVING  - GRATITUDE for what God had done for them in the past, and will continue to do for them.  This was a "song of restoration and freedom", as the Lord returned His people to their homeland.

"With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord: "HE IS GOOD. HIS LOVE FOR TOWARDS ISRAEL ENDURES FOREVER". And all the people gave a great shout of praise because the foundation of the House of the Lord was laid." Ezra 3:11 (NIV)

"Stand up and PRAISE THE LORD YOUR GOD for He lives from everlasting to everlasting." Then He prayed: May YOUR GLORIOUS NAME BE PRAISED! MAY IT BE EXALTED ABOVE ALL BLESSING AND PRAISE! You alone are the Lord. You made the skies and the Heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of Heaven WORSHIP YOU." Nehemiah 9:5-6  (NLT)

They were celebrating personal experiences, as once again in their history, God had rescued them from their exile. It seemed "too good to be true", but IT WAS TRUE, for God  kept His promises. It was like a "inspiring revival" in the Christian Church today, and they were astounded at God's work. Their response was LAUGHTER AND SINGING.

"For I know the plans I have for you" says the Lord, "plans for good and not disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)

SINGING FORTH JOY - Read Verses 1-3, Nehemiah 9

"When the Lord restored our fortunes in Zion, we were like those in a dream. OUR MOUTHS WERE FILLED WITH LAUGHTER AND OUR TONGUES WITH SONGS OF JOY. "
Psalm 126:1&2a (NIV)

These 1st Verses, 1-3, express the Israelites joy at their return and their praise and thanks for God's blessings to them.

In the Southern Desert, the Negev, their are "river-beds", which for moost of the year remain dry. When the rain comes, "the water rushes down in torrents". The "parched Negev springs to life"- like a "winter waterfall" of God's grace.

"As the harvest follows the time of planting, God can be counted on to complete His restoration work." Mark Thornfelt.

"Then it was said among the nations, "THE LORD HAS DONE GREAT THINGS FOR THEM." The Lord has done great things for us, and we are FILLED WITH JOY." Psalm 126:2b&3 (NIV)

The sense of amazement at GOD'S GREATNESS was not only from God's people, but their joy was seen by surrounding nations too. Sometimes people will "LOOK ON AND SEE" God working in our lives. They see:

* THE JOY OF GOD'S SALVATION.
* THE JOY OF SPIRITUAL VICTORY.
* THE JOY OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP.
* THE JOY OF REVIVAL - NEW AND GREAT THINGS.

People can see our new work for God, or JOYFUL PEACE and our CONFIDENT JOY. They too ARE GLAD!

"His mercy was so unexpected and amazing, that they could not do less than laugh. They laughed much so that their mouths were full of it, and their hearts were full too." Charles Spurgeon

"The joyful, celebration was not contained to God's people. Onlooking nations had to proclaim the work belonged to Yahweh. and that was TRULY GREAT." David Guzik

The Psalmist heard what the other nations were saying, and he too knew that God had indeed done great things for him and his people. This was joyful peace that he declared, not hyped up enthusiasm. This was a CONFIDENT JOY, and this is what the Psalmist declared when he wrote: "WE ARE GLAD - FILLED WITH JOY".

"But in your GREAT MERCY you did not put an end to them or ABANDON THEM, for you are a GRACIOUS AND MERCIFUL GOD." Nehemiah 9:31 (NIV)

GRIEF TURNING INTO JOY - Read Psalm 126:4-6,                   Nehemiah 8

"Those who SOW WITH TEARS will REAP WITH SONGS OF JOY. Those who GO OUT WEEPING, carrying seeds to sow, will RETURN WITH SONGS OF JOY, carrying their sheaves with them." Psalm 126:5&6 (NIV)

In the second half of this Psalm - Verses 4-6, we are reminded that the exiles, under the leadership of Ezra, had a lot of hard work ahead of them, rebuilding the Temple. The RESTORATION had only JUST BEGUN! These verses tell of the JOY that will come from their GRIEF.

These verses find God's people finding encouragement and strength, as they recollect what God had done for them - a mixture of SORROW AND JOY. Tears sowed in faith will bring a "TRUE HARVEST". In the joy of these pilgrim's SONG OF HARVEST, they indeed enjoyed this. But still, they knew there was more "hard work" and "persecution" to come - days that would bring them GRIEF. But if they trusted in God's Word as Ezra and the Levites had been teaching them, they would definitely find JOY.

"Ezra praised the Lord, the GREAT GOD; and all the people lifted their hands and responded: "AMEN! AMEN! Then they bowed down and WORSHIPPED THE LORD with their faces to the ground.......The Levites read the book of the Law, making it clear and giving it meaning, so that the people understood WHAT WAS BEING READ."   Nehemiah 8:6&8 (NIV)

"This is a wonderful PROMISE - great and powerful, that our TEARS AND SORROWS need not be wasted. but can be sown for a JOYFUL HARVEST to be received in a better season."
David Guzik.

"This day is holy to our Lord. DO NOT GRIEVE, for the JOY OF THE LORD IS YOUR STRENGTH." Nehemiah 8:10b

These verses in this Psalm are also a prayer for God's deliverance and restoration. GREAT JOY  proceeded by TEARS. Hard work , sown in tears, will lead to JOY. But some people want the JOY without the HARD WORK. We will have difficulties in our life that we need to endure. Tears sown in faith WILL have a JOYFUL HARVEST. Don't think you are done when you receive both SORROW AND JOY!

CONCLUSION - A CHRISTIAN'S JOY

"There are a great many people who want to have the "JOY OF THE LORD" before they receive Jesus Christ as their Saviour. They don't know why they are FULL OF JOY. But this is the GOSPEL ORDER: we have JOY when JESUS COMES INTO OUR HEARTS because HE IS THE AUTHOR OF JOY." Dwight L Moody

"Christianity should be a HALLELUJAH from the head to the toe." St Augustine of Hipppo - cited in Spiritual Disciplines.

An "atmosphere of celebration" should always be in the life of the Christian, even in dificult times. We are "redeemed by the blood of Christ" and we should "shine with JOY".

"Celebration and the joy that comes with it, are a result of what you look at." Spiritual Disciplines.

A Christian with a"Heavenly perspective" understands that everything on earth is TEMPORARY. This JOY FLOWS because we know we are CHILDREN OF GOD. Nobody can steal this joy from us. The good news that comes with the knowledge that JESUS DIED FOR US, and WE ARE SAVED, comes with "healing of our broken heart". We are the "target of God's love and search.

What other motives do we need for JOY AND CELEBRATION!

PSALM 125 - TRUSTING IN THE LORD

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 125

"We can imagine the pilgrims chanting this song when walking through the city walls."                                                                                                                      Charles Spurgeon

When the Pilgrims headed toward Jerusalem, one thing was certain: Mount Zion would be there when they arrived, and the Temple where they could worship their Father God.

Psalm 25 is full of  God's "promises", but these also come with conditions. God doesn't want your "split devotion" - half heartedness - He wants our total TRUST and this is the "basis for our relationship with God".

TRUST IN THE LORD and HE WILL PROTECT YOU -                                            Read Verses 1&2

"Those who TRUST IN THE LORD are like Mt Zion, which cannot be moved (shaken), but endures forever." Psalm 125:1 (NIV/NLT)

"We can't properly put our TRUST IN THE LORD, until we remove our TRUST in other things. He alone is our REFUGE AND STRENGTH." David Guzik

TRUST IN THE LORD means that we "BELIEVE" IN HIM, knowing that our Father God will care for us and meet our needs.  In this 1st Verse in Psalm 125, God "agrees to give help" to His people, if they will LOVE AND OBEY HIM.  The mountain called Zion was in the city of Jerusalem, and was surrounded by other mountains. We know that God is near us and will protect us, just like "the mountains were always near Jerusalem".

"Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people, both now and forever." Psalm 125:2 (NLT)

The pilgrims who came to Jerusalem from afar,  were impressed with the stature of Mount Zion. It was a prominent hill in which Jerusalem was established. The one who believes and trusts in the Lord is promised the "same security", as he or she "abides forever".

"God promised to not only be present with His people, but also to be all around them. God surrounded His people, so that nothing could get to them, unless it first passed through Him"
                                                                                                     David Guzik

Don't ever seperate the TRUST in Verse 1 with GOD'S PROTECTION in Verse 2. Remember, that  TRUST is a condition. There were times in Israel's history when they failed to trust God, "worshipping other gods and other people" ,  putting their trust in their own "wisdom and  strength."  In those days they were "not protected".  This is when  Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC, and then later by General Titus and his thousands of Roman Troops in AD 70.

With this "history of destruction" is seems "some what misguided" to use the "permanence of Mt Zion" as a "simile for the security of God's people". Yet we know that there is a city in Heaven, a new Jerusalem that can "never be toppled". This is the Mount Zion that will stand forever, and this is what the Psalmist may have be thinking about. I can't wait till I get to Heaven, and like the disciple John, can set my eyes on the New Jerusalem.

"I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem........and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: "Look's God's dwelling place is now among the people, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God." Revelation 21:2&3 (NIV)

"But you have come to Mt Zion, to the city of the Living God, the Heavenly Jerusalem. You have to thousands upon thousands of  angels in Heaven......Therefore, since you are receiving a Kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful and worship God with reverance."                                                                                                           Hebrews 12:22&28 (NIV)

"As followers of Christ, our HOPE is not tied to anything in this world. It is much more secure than that. God's surrounding protection will be with believers forever, even as Jesus promised His presence to His peope to the end of the age." John Greco

"And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20 (NLT)

GOD'S PROMISES TO HIS GOOD PEOPLE -

                                Read Verses 3&4

"The sceptor of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the RIGHTEOUS for then the righteous might use their hands for to do evil." Psalm 125:3 (NIV)
                                                                                          Psalm 125:4 (NLT)

This is the PROMISE that God gave to his people when they TRUSTED IN HIM. The Lord is righteous, and so he wants His people to be righteous too.  He wants them to follow His will and His ways. When we live upright lives, we can be sure that God is always with us. Under the Old Covenant there was a "blessing for God's people",  the Israelites, but their was also a "curse for the wicked." The Psalmist pictures these "workers of iniquity" being led out to Babylon, the land of exile.

As I have been reading in the book of Jeremiah, God's people didn't always follow God's will. Many of their kings were "evil and wicked", and led them astray. They were punished by God and the Babylonians, who led them into exile and captivity. Still, God promised that He would bring them back to His land, Jerusalem, and their Temple and city woud be rebuilt.

"In all history there has never been such a time of terror. It will be a time of trouble for my people Israel. Yet, in the end, THEY WILL BE SAVED! ....."So do not be afraid, Jacob my servant, do not be dismayed, Israel", says the Lord, "For I will bring you home again from distant lands, and your children will return from their exile. Israel will return to a LIFE OF PEACE AND QUIET, and no one will terrorize them. For I AM WITH YOU AND WILL SAVE YOU."
                                                                   Jeremiah 30:7,10&11 (NLT)

"There are POWERFUL, PRECIOUS PROMISES made in this Psalm, but they are CONDITIONAL PROMISES, dependent of God's people's RELATIONSHIP OF TRUST and that they live as a RIGHTEOUS (GOOD) PEOPLE in  the land that was allotted to them." David Guzik

We cannot, of course, believe that if we TRUST GOD and endeavour to LIVE RIGHTEOUS LIVES, that we will not have TROUBLE. But we know that these will all be in the "wisdom and plan of God", and as Paul reminds us:

"We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

"O Lord, do GOOD to those who are GOOD, whose hearts are in tune with You." Psalm 125:4

CONCLUSION - PEACE BE UPON ISRAEL - Read Verse 5

Psalm 125 ends in a PRAYER pronouncing PEACE (SHALOM) upon Israel. This prayer was from a righteous man - the Psalmist - and God was pleased with him. It was a prayer of PRAISE and WORSHIP, bringing joy to the Father and His Son Jesus.

"Finally, the Poet stretched out his hands over all Israel, as if blessing them like a Priest. He embraces ALL HIS HOPES, petitions and wishes in one prayer , 'PEACE BE UPON ISRAEL!"
Alexander  MacLaren - cited by David Guzik

"Let not your heart be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me..... PEACE I LEAVE WITH YOU; MY PEACE I GIVE TO YOU. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:1&27 (NLT/NIV)

"When you are troubled and stressed, call upon the Lord and and review this Psalm. then hand your troubles over to God." Max Lucado

The PEACE that God gives is CONFIDENCE that He is WATCHING, DIRECTING AND CARING for those who TRUST IN HIM.

PSALM 124 - GOD IS OUR HELP

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 124

This Psalm is the second "Songs of Ascent" that we believe was written by David. In David's first "Ascent Psalm" - Psalm 122 - he tells how the pilgrims gathered in Jerusalem after their journeys. Here, David is leading Israel again in GIVING THANKS for their "past help" and "expressing confidence in His continuing help."'

"Despite the attribution to David, several commentators connect this Psalm with the exiles returning from Babylon......It is best to keep the connection with David, considering it an earnest plea for Israel to thank God for deliverance PAST AND PRESENT." David Guzik

"If God had not been on our side" - the consequences are unthinkable." Pat and David Alexander

For without GOD'S HELP the Nation of Israel - God's people - and David's kingdom, would not have survived their enemy attacks. Over and over we see through the Israelite histoy, they needed GOD'S HELP - and GOD ALONE!

"God rescued the people lof Israel from their enemies. Although the odds were against them, GOD SAVED THEM. We should not seek strength in weapons or political power. REAL POWER COMES FROM GOD." Max Lucado

My life too has been one of "enemy attacks". Over and over in my life, like the Israelites, I have been struck by TEMPTATION AND TRIALS. But one thing I know for sure, God has always been "on my side". He has been my HELPER AND RESCUER. All I can do is sing Him PRAISE AND THANKS.

"PRAISE reflects our acknowledgement of all that GOD IS and all that GOD HAS DONE, IS DOING and has promised TO DO. It is only after we have PRAISED GOD for what HE IS and what HE DOES, can we bring our requests to Him." Michael Youssef

THE LORD IS AT OUR SIDE - Read Verses 1-5

"What if the Lord had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat: "What if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us." Psalm 124:1&2 (NLT)

David was determined that all God's people would remember His promise "THE LORD IS ON OUR SIDE". If it wasn't for the Lord living with them, their descendents would have been destroyed way back in Egypt and in the wilderness. They would not have made it to the Promised Land. In David's day, he had to fight against the Philistines, and again David knew that GOD WAS ON HIS SIDE.

"Wilderness survivors find refuge in GOD'S PRESENCE......Are you in the wilderness?....Your key to wilderness survival is to LIVE WITH JESUS and to FIND COMFORT WITH GOD'S PEOPLE."
                                                                                                                   Max Lucado

Way back in his life David knew this promise when he fought Goliath. David hears Goliath defying God - that's when he makes his decision. When Saul and his soldiers heard Goliath's threats, they were terrified, BUT NOT DAVID. When David showed up he was talking about the "LIVING GOD".

"David replied to the Philistines, "You come to me with swords, spears and javelin, but I come to you kin the NAME OF THE LORD OF HEAVEN'S ARMIES - the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head.....and the whole world will know that THERE IS A GOD IN ISRAEL! And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues His people, but not with a sword or spear. THIS IS THE LORD'S BATTLE and He will give you to us." 1 Samuel 17:45&47 (NLT)

Now, as a king, still fighting against his enemies, the Philistines, David still knew that God was on His side. We too have "giants" and "enemies" - trials we have to face. But we don't need to FACE THEM ALONE. THE LORD IS ON OUR SIDE! We will win the "Lord's battles", for we know we have our "living God" with us.

"I know the Lord is ALWAYS WITH ME. I will not be shaken, for HE IS RIGHT BESIDE ME."
                                                                                             Psalm 16:8 (NLT)

David poetically described the potential ruim of the Israelites. Their danger was like "being swallowed alive" by a giant beast or like being "drowned when waters overwhelm them".

"They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger. The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us. Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed their very lives." Psalm 124:3-5 (NLT)

My husband Mark and I have been reading the Book of Jeremiah. Today he made a comment: "This is a real depressiomg passage." And it was, because God's anger and fury with His people was indeed not something to celebrate at the time - they had disobeyed God and they were to be overtaken by the Babylonians. Later though, we will read God's promise of SALVATION and "HOPE". These are the verses I always remember, and I know my mother had a plaque with these words in her home, for those bad days when she was feeling down and depressed.

"For I know the PLANS I have for you, says the Lord. They are PLANS FOR GOOD, not for disaster, to GIVE YOU A FUTURE AND A HOPE. In those days, WHEN YOU PRAY, I WILL LISTEN." Jeremiah 29:11&12 (NLT)

ENDING OUR PRAYERS WITH PRAISE - Read Verses 6-8

"PRAISE THE LORD who did not let their teeth tear us apart! Who escaped like a bird from a hunter's trap. The trap is broken and WE ARE FREE! OUR HELP IS FROM THE LORD, who made Heaven and earth." Psalm 124:6-8 (NLT)

Here again, David ENDS HIS PRAYER WITH PRAISE. As in other Psalms of David, he likes to end with "blessing the Lord." and thanking Him for all He has done. This is a "confident expression" of what we believe God will do in the future.

When we look back into our lives, we may not always feel wonderful. In fact, there are days we may even have "fits of depression"; but when we TRUST IN THE LORD and know that He is on our side, we can remember those times of "divine intervention".

"Blessed are they that TRUST IN THE LORD and have made the Lord THEIR HOPE AND CONFIDENCE."  Psalm 17:7 (NLT)

"When we close our prayers WITH PRAISE, we are asking the Lord to answer our petitions, IN HIS TIMING, according to HIS METHODS and in ways that perfectly FIT HIS WILL. Praise lead's us into GOD'S INTIMATE PRESENCE, and once we were there with us, we discover His will for us. PRAISE leads us to the place where we receive POWER FROM GOD." Michael Youssef

"When we worship the Creator, let us increase our TRUST in our comforter. Did He create all that we see and cannot He not preserve us from evils which we cannot see?" Charles Spurgeon

CONCLUSION - Read Psalm 124

"In the year 1582, this Psalm was sung on a remarkable occasion in Edinburgh. An imprisoned minister, John Durie, had been set free and was met and welcomed on entering the town by 200 of his friends. The number increased until he found himself in the midst of a company of 2000, who began to sing as they moved up the High Street, "Now Israel may say, "If the Lord had not been on our side"....They sang in 4 parts, with deep solemnity, all joining in a well known tune and Psalm. They were much moved themselves, and so were all who heard; and one of the chief persecutors is said to have been more alarmed at this sight and song than anything he had seen in Scotland."
Horatious Bonar - cited by Charles Spurgeon.

PSALM 123 - OUR MERCIFUL GOD

 INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 123, Nehemiah 1-7:3, 8&9

Psalm 123 is a PLEA FOR MERCY from those who have come to Jerusalem for their Feasts - another one of the "Songs of Ascension." It is a "single voice" singing on behavior of the Israelites - God's People. It is a short Psalm, but the message is simple and clear: "OUR GOD IS MERCIFUL".

"It is likely this Psalm would have been used in an ancient worship setting in which the community expressed their trust in God and pleaded for His help." William H Ballinger Jnr.

Some commentators believe it may have been written by Nehemiah, when the people came back from Babylon to Jerusalem to rebuild their Temple and city. Everything looked dark when Nehemiah arrived to see the walls broken down, and it was a city of poverty. The other nations had been looking down upon them as "week, feeble Jews". Everything seems against Nehemiah, but he was a man who had the "fire of God in his soul". He had come to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and his heart was only for this task.  He was "earnest" and "enthusiastic" about his plans to rebuild.

"But Nehemiah was wise. He paid no attention to his accusers. He just looked to God for GRACE AND COMFORT." Dwight L Moody

"Do not grieve, for the JOY OF THE LORD IS YOUR STRENGTH." Nehemiah 8:10b (NIV)

LOOKING TO THE LORD - Read Verses 1&2

"I LIFT UP MY EYES TO YOU, to You, who sit enthroned in Heaven." Psalm 123:1

"The Psalmist declares his intention and action - to lift up his eyes to the LORD. This means his eyes are not on his circumstances or himself, but only the Lord." David Guzik

"I would like to call your attention to the prophet Nehemiah. We may gain some help from this distinguished man who accomplished a great work - he was a man of stirling worth. Although he was brought up in the idolatrist city of Persia, we are sure of one thing at least - he has a character that has stood for centuries......Nehemiah was a great man of PRAYER who began with confession of his own sins, and those of his people. After PRAYING he received GREAT POWER FROM GOD." Dwight L Moody

With the same intensity as a servant or maid looks to their master or mistress, the Psalmist "looks above "the mountains and hills" to the Lord. They know that their master would supply all their needs, and would direct their work. Like Nehemiah, we know that our God is indeed MERCIFUL AND FAITHFUL, and will do the same for us. The Psalmist persevered patiently until the Lord extended His mercy to His people.

SEEKING THE LORD'S MERCY - Read Verses 3&4,          Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-6

"We wait for Him to show His mercy. Have mercy on us, O Lord, because we have been insulted."                                                                                                                 Psalm 123:2b & 3 (NCV)

The Psalmist demonstrated that waiting on the Lord is not a "passive" thing. He repeated the request for MERCY, showing the intensity of his plea. He knew that the Lord would answer his prayer and help him. God is compassionate, understanding how we, like the Psalmist, have been "insulted" and persecuted for our FAITH.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the FATHER OF COMPASSION and the GOD OF ALL COMFORT. He comforts us in our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble, with the comfort we ourselves have received from God." 2 Corinthians 1:3&4 (NIV)

"Now GRACE means unmerited MERCY - undeserved favour. ..... If God were to give us GRACE enough for a lifetime, He has given us the priviledfe of drawing on Him day by day. There is plenty of GRACE in the bank of Heaven; we need not be afraid of it becoming exhausted."
                                                                                            Dwight L Moody

"We have suffered many insults from lazy people, and much cruelty from the proud."                                                                                                                      Psalm 123:4 (NCV)

Scorn and insults are never easy to bear, but it is especially painful when we have a few problems and difficulties to face. We can be assured of CHRIST'S MERCY,  because we know that He has shared in the "contempt of the proud". When Jesus suffered most, His closest friends "denied Him"
and were not at his side.

"Nevertheless, this Psalm is filled with the unspoken confidence that the MERCY OF GOD will triumph over the contempt of the proud." David Guzik

"We share in the many sufferings of Christ. In the same way, much comfort comes to us, through Christ. If we have troubles it is for our COMFORT AND SALVATION, and if we have comfort, you also have comfort. This helps you to accept PATIENTLY the same sufferings we have."                                                                                                        2 Corinthians 1:5&6 (NCV)

"The Apostles left the meeting full of joy because they were given the honour of suffering disgrace for Jesus." Acts 5:41 (NIV)

PSALM 122 - REACHING THEIRM DESTINATION

INTRODUCTION - Read Psalm 122

Back in Psalm 120 , WE MEET THE PILGRIMS. In Psalm 121, we find them TRAVELLING ON THEIR JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM. In Psalm 122, THEY HAVE ARRIVED!

"I was happy when they said unto me, "Let's go to the Temple of the Lord. JERUSALEM, we are standing at your gates." Psalm 122:1&2 (NCV)

Psalm 122 is still a "A Song of Ascents", but this time it has an author - DAVID. It is one of
the 4 "Songs of Ascents" attributed to him. He wrote it, both, for what Jerusalem was is in his day, and  for what it would under his son Solomon and his successors.

This Psalm is all about JERUSALEM - the destination - the city where God chose to live among His people. It is a place where the 12 Tribes of Israel go up to meet together to "praise the Lord in according to the statues of the Lord."

"You must seek the Lord at the place of worship He Himself will choose from among all the tribes - the place where His name will be honoured." Deuteronomy 12:5

"David wrote it for the people to sing at the time of their going up to the Holy Feasts in Jerusalem. It It comes third in the series, and it appears to be suitable to be sung when the people had entered the gates, and their feet stood within the city." Charles Spurgeon

WORSHIPING IN GOD'S TEMPLE -  Read Verses 1&2,            I  Chroniocles 22.

During David's day there was never a TEMPLE, but he knew that one would be built, having extensively planned and prepared for it. It is possible that David wrote here of the pilgrimage to the TABERNACLE, which existed in his day and was regarded as the HOUSE OF THE LORD. It is more likely, though, that he wrote it in anticipation for the pilgrims who would come tom TEMPLE that was to be built by Solomon.

"Then David said, “This will be the location for the Temple of the Lord God and the place of the altar for Israel’s burnt offerings! ....... David said, “My son Solomon is still young and inexperienced. And since the Temple to be built for the Lord must be a magnificent structure, famous and glorious throughout the world, I will begin making preparations for it now. So David collected vast amounts of building materials before his death.......   Then David sent for his son Solomon and instructed him to build a Temple for the Lord, the God of Israel. 7“My son, I wanted to build a Temple to honor the name of the Lord my God.........Now, my son, may the Lord be with you and give you success as you follow his directions in building the Temple of the Lord your God."
                                                 1 Chronicles 22:1, 5, 7,11 (NLT)

Coming to GOD'S HOUSE made David happy, though he knew that no building could contain all of GOD'S GLORY AND GREATNESS. But, at the HOUSE OF THE LORD David focused all his  PRAYERS and WORSHIP, just like our Churches today. Like David, we also rejoice in GOD'S WORD in the community of God's people.

Like David, going to GOD'S HOUSE - our Church -  should be a glad thing. Not always "fun and entertaining", but it should be "good and welcoming" for both the believer and the non-believer. If this is not the case it is probably a "state of the heart" that is the problem.

Most people regard "our feet standing within the gates", to be David's description of the statement made by the  "joyful pilgrims" who have finally arrived in Jerusalem. They come because this is where David set up the Tabernacle, and where the "Ark of the Covenant"  and the "Altar of Sacrifice" were. Later Solomon built thge Temple that David had planned and prepared for their later WORSHIP if the Heavenly Father God.

"Now seek the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. Build the sanctuary of the Lord God so that you can bring the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant and the holy vessels of God into the Temple built to honor the Lord’s name.” 1 Chronicles 22:19 (NLT)

JERUSALEM - A UNIFIED CITY - Read Verses 3&4

"Jerusalem is a well-built city and it seamless walls cannot be breached. That is where the TRIBES  go up - the TRIBES OF THE LORD - to praise the name of the Lord according to the statues given to Israel." Psalm 122:3&4 (NIV)

David had conquered the city of Jerusalem and he made it the capital of the Kingdom of Israel. It had been a Caananite stronghold held by the Jebusites. He built the city and rejoiced when God's walls were built.

"It mattered not how wicked and degraded a place may hace been in former times, when it is sanctified to the use and service of God it becomes honourable......now it is a city compacted together for the "joy of the whole earth". (Plummer, cited by Charles Spurgeon)

Jerusalem was not a large city, but it was not a disorderly "collection of tents and shacks". It was built in a compact, orderly manner - a real "unified city".  One of the reasons David established Jerusalem as his capital was because he wanted it for a meeting place for the 12 tribes of Israel. God's chosen people could come together for unified worship in the House of the Lord.

"Christians today should reflect this same UNITY, even with their DIVERSITY." David Guzik

The primary purpose of the "Feasts of the Tabernacle", were so that the 12 tribes could gather together and give THANKS TO GOD. Their appreciation of what God has done for them in the PAST, gave them FAITH for what He would do in the FUTURE.

"The unity of the city reflected the unity of the Tribes on these special occasions. The Israelite tribes came together for the purpose of PRAISING THE LORD. It was an act of loyalty as the Lord commanded them to present themselves before Him." (VanGemeran - cited by David Guzik.

"Here stand the thrones where judgement is given, the thrones of the Dynasty of David."
                                                                                               Psalm 122:5 (NKJV)

David's house was established to rule over Israel. David's lineage reigned in Jerusalem, and will forever reign through Jesus Christ, our Messiah. For Jerusalem is also where Jesus died and rose again. In doing this we have been unifies as one with Him and His Father God.

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.
I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you.
And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. ....I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me."John 17:20-21,23

PRAYING FOR PEACE IN JERUSALEM - Read Verses 6-9

Jerusalem was cherished in the hearts of God's people. It was where the Temple was, where ordinary people
could draw near to God. That is why David is telling his people, and those generations to follow:

"PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM. May those who love you be secure. O Jerusalem, may there be PEACE
within your walls and prosperity in your palaces. For the sake of my family and friends, I will say: "MAY YOU HAVE
PEACE." For the sake of the House of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity." Psalm 122:6-9 (NIV)

David exhorted pilgrims coming to the Holy City to PRAY FOR THE PEACE of his city. Jerusalem's
Jerusalem's name itself is "CITY OF PEACE." It was also the "CITY OF WORSHIP"and the seat of Government for the nation of Israel.

David's prayer included a BLESSING for those who LOVED this city and prayed for its PEACE. The BLESSING was not only
for the INDIVIDUAL but for the whole COMMUNITY - "David's fellow countrymen living in the city."
Ancient Jerusalem had "political, economic and social importance. " Yet the most important reason people loved and cared for
their city was because of the "HOUSE OF GOD."

"Jerusalem was an outpost of Heaven in the world. The holiest place within the Temple complex was where God's
glory lived. God made the earth a place where God dwells with His people." John Greco

"For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea." Habbakuk 2:14 (NIV)

CONCLUSION - OUR CHURCH TODAY

Christians should have the same great love and care for their Churches today, and seek to be God's SERVANTS in them. In light of all that Jesus has done, it is no longer enough just to PRAY for Jerusalem. The House of the Lord is no longer confined within the walls of one city. We must pray for our brothers and sisters, EVERYWHERE, near and far!

"Just as it was good for the PILGRIMS in Israel to seek the good of Jerusalem, for the sake of GOD'S HOUSE, so

Christians today can and should seek the good of society for the sake of GOD'S HOUSE."    David Guzik

"First WE LOVE IT,  then we LABOUR FOR IT. As in this passage, WE SEE ITS GOOD, and then SEEK ITS GOOD." Charles Spurgeon
